Welcome to Day 2 of $10k PLO Championship

Ben Lamb
Ben Lamb

The World Series of Poker boasts dozens of events featuring a handful of different games and quite a few hybrid mixed events have been installed to the schedule in recent years. While no-limit hold'em still conquers the vast majority of action in Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, pot-lImit Omaha is the No. 1 growing game on the list. PLO has seemed to trend up in the past festivals and events such as PLO Giant allow the four-card game expand among a wider audience.

But Omaha has been getting more love even at the top level as well. We saw it last year when the crown jewel of the $10k PLO Championship attracted a record-breaking 428 entries. Now the bar has been pushed higher again with the 2018 edition already counting 439 runners in the race. With new record numbers locked up, the $10k PLO Championship is still open to anyone who had other plans on Saturday during Day 1. Late registration closes before the cards go back in the air today at 2 p.m. local time so the final number might get further inflated.

In such big field, it's guaranteed that the eventual champion will nab a huge chunk of money along with the prestigious title and bracelet. The past champions took home prizes not far away from seven figures.

So far, Ryan Hughes has made for the storylines after bagging the lead ahead of Day 2. Hughes has already made it to two final tables at this year's series, including a heads-up appearance in the Mixed Big Bet. That mix featured the games of PLO and PLO-8, among others, but with a special feature of antes. The PLO Championship is played in a traditional way for Omaha and no antes are in play. That allows a patient grind throughout, and Hughes can surely be chilling for a while, should he want to. He will come back to almost 240 big blinds when he unbags his 475,400.

Needless to say, the remaining field of 175 players is packed with some of the world's best players including the Mizrachi brothers who have both reported a great start to the tournament. Michael, fresh off winning an unprecedented third title in the Poker Players Championship, sits just outside of the top 10 with 275,000. Robert, who already topped the PLO Championship back in 2007, is also above the virtual average line with 196,200.

Robert Mizrachi isn't the only former champ left in contention. 2011 winner Ben Lamb made a strong statement on Day 1, amassing 314,100 to occupy the fourth place on the leaderboard. Lee Watkinson (2006), Brandon Shack-Harris (2016) and defending champion Tommy Le are all also trying to pair their respective titles.

Lyndaker Eliminates Ivey

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 0 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

On a board reading {3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Hearts}{8-Hearts}, big blind Richard Lyndaker bet enough to put Phil Ivey all in. Ivey was in the cutoff and had about 63,000 left, just a hair under Lyndaker's pot-sized bet. Ivey sloppily shipped all his chips in and turned over {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{9-Spades} for combo draw and a pair of sixes but he was trailing the {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts} of Lyndaker. The river was an {8-Spades} and Ivey wished everyone good luck.

Nguyen Rockets Up

Scotty Nguyen

On a flop of {7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, both blinds checked to the cutoff, who bet 20,500. Igor Yaroshevskyy called in the small blind before Scotty Nguyen jammed in the big. It was 84,000 more and the cutoff repotted to chase Yaroshevskyy out.

Nguyen had flopped a set with {k-Spades}{7-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and was facing clubs and jacks against {a-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{j-Spades}. It was a short sweat as the {8-Clubs} turn gave Nguyen a boat and the {a-Spades} river kept it best.

Connor Drinan
Connor Drinan

Connor Drinan was in the big blind and he stuffed all his 74,500 chips into the middle preflop, facing off against Eric Rabl who was in an early position.

Drinan: {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{10-Clubs}
Rabl: {A-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

The dealer spread out a board of {8-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}, giving Drinan two pair. Rabl had a flush draw on the turn but he couldn't get there and Drinan doubled up.

Gryko Busts Valerstein to Increase His Monster Stack

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 0 ante
Richard Gryko, pictured in a different event.
Richard Gryko, pictured in a different event.

Richard Gryko opened to 12,500 from the second position and Roman Valerstein made it 45,000 out of the small blind. Gryko called to see the flop.

It fell {2-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and they ended up all in for Valerstein's remaining 41,500.

Valerstein: {A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Gryko: {A-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Gryko had only a pair of sevens but he was still ahead of Valerstein's Broadway hand. The {6-Clubs} turn took tens away from Valerstein's outs and the {7-Diamonds} river sealed his fate.

Gryko added another almost a hunge to his huge piles and now sits on 680,000.

Hughes Back to a Dominant Stack

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Ryan Hughes
Ryan Hughes

Ryan Hughes started the day as a chip leader but he was down to a nub a few levels ago. It's all forgotten now as Hughes is back at the top.

He was spotted in a pot against Richard Gryko who was under the gun, check-calling a bet on the flop of {8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{9-Clubs}.

The turn was the {K-Hearts} and Gryko check-called another 125,000.

They saw the {K-Clubs} complete the board and Gryko checked one more time. Hughes announced he was betting 125,000 and Gryko took about a minute before he finally threw in the calling chips.

"Nut flush," Hughes said, rolling over {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for the ace-high flush along with a king blocker.

Gryko mucked and Hughes stacked his chips in tall piles, his traditional way when he's guarding a big stack.

No Hand-for-Hand, Ohel Bubbles the PLO Championship

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 0 ante
Randy Ohel
Randy Ohel

Just when the tournament floor person informed the dealers to stop the action after the hand in progress, a big hand played out on Table 439. Everything was ready to switch for the hand-for-hand mode on a stone bubble once the hand would be over, with the field down to 73 players.

It started with Randy Ohel limping under the gun. Chase Steely was in the hijack, making it 25,000 and Bogdan Capitan called in the cutoff and Ohel called as well.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs} and Ohel potted for 87,000. Chase Steely raised all in and Capitan got out of the way. Ohel threw in his last 20,000 or so.

Randy Ohel: {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Chase Steely: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Ohel had a wrap and a nine while Steely turned up two pair and a flush draw.

The turn was the {3-Diamonds} and the {A-Diamonds} river brought no help for Ohel either.

"Dammit," Ohel said, knowing he fell short of cashing.

Hachem Runs into the Quads and Doesn't Get Away

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 0 ante
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

Joe Hachem moved all in for 130,000 on a completed board of {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{j-Spades} and got snap-called by Brandon Shack-Harris.

"I have quads," Shack-Harris said quickly, flipping over {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs}.

Hachem showed {a-}{a-} and mucked, halting his massage and heading for payouts.

Earlier, Ryan Laplante said on Twitter that Hachem folded aces full against him on a paired board but he didn't have the quads.

Hakim Falls to Wong's Straight Flush

Level 19 : 6,000/12,000, 0 ante
Jerry Wong
Jerry Wong

Jeff Hakim opened to 42,000 and Jerry Wong three-bet to 140,000. Hakim moved all in and Wong called right away.

Hakim had {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} but it was a tough race against Wong's {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Wong's double suited connectors filled immediately on the flop, leaving Hakim drawing dead as the {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{8-Clubs} hit the felt. Wong flopped a straight flush, earning some "wows" from the table while Hakim was packing his belongings.

The {10-Hearts} turn and {3-Hearts} river were a formality and Wong chipped up to 820,000.
