Event #49: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship

Day 2 Completed

Swingy Day Sees Hughes Atop Counts Again With 37 Left

When Day 2 of Event #49: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 8-Handed Championship began at the World Series of Poker, Ryan Hughes sat atop the counts after a strong finish on Day 1. That's exactly where he wound up 12 hours later, but it wasn't exactly smooth sailing.

Hughes started the day with 475,400 and ended with 2,366,000. In between, though, he dipped all the way down to 38,000 at 2,000/4,000, at which point he had one of the shortest stacks in the room. That was after Joseph Liberta picked him off on a huge bluff with Hughes jamming the river holding top two but Liberta having trip nines.

However, Hughes recovered in a hurry. He had ten-times that number two hours later and then moved up to 800,000 after getting multiple streets of value from Richard Gryko with aces that turned into the nut flush.

The big hand that cemented his lead, however, took place in the penultimate level of the evening at 6,000/12,000. Six-time bracelet winner Layne Flack raised it up and got two callers. A ten-high flop saw Flack bet just under pot for 100,000 and Hughes continue. Flack check-called 300,000 on a brick turn and then front-jammed 300,000 when the board paired on the river. Hughes quickly called with top boat to send Flack to the rail and move over 2 million when his nearest rivals were barely cracking 1 million.

Along with Hughes, 36 others made it through, including second-place Rep Porter (1.7 million), Brandon Shack-Harris (1.2 million), Scotty Nguyen (897,000) and poker YouTube star Joey Ingram (749,000).

Joey Ingram
Joey Ingram will be back on Day 3 of the $10k PLO

All of them are well into the money as the bubble burst just under an hour after the dinner break. Shawn Buchanan and Randy Ohel went down at virtually the same time to let the rest of the field fade any hand-for-hand play.

Some of the players who busted and got paid included Connor Drinan, Joe Hachem, Robert Mizrachi, and Ben Lamb.

Hachem experienced a highly unlucky bustout when he flopped aces full against Brandon Shack-Harris, who flopped quad kings. All the money went in on the river and Hachem went to the rail.

The remaining 37 runners are all in contention for a hefty first-place prize of $1,018,336. They're scheduled to play down to a winner on Day 3 starting at 2 p.m., but it may be a tall order with such a number. Keep an eye on the live updates here on PokerNews to see if it happens.

Tsang Eliminates Wasserson in a Robust Pot

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante
Eric Wasserson
Eric Wasserson

Yan Shing Tsang raised to 42,000 in the cutoff and the action stopped at Eric Wasserson who raised the pot out of the big blind. Tsang matched the 134,000-raise and they went to the {9-Hearts}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs} flop.

Wasserson potted again, making it 276,000 and Tsang pushed all in, covering Wasserson's 400,000 or so. Wasserson put in the rest of his chips.

Tsang: {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Wasserson: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}

Tsang outflopped Wasserson as he hit two pair but Wasserson was still drawing very live. The {8-Diamonds} gave Tsang even better two pair.

The river was the {K-Hearts} and that was Wasserson's swan song in the tournament as he lost the over a 1 million pot to Tsang who boosted his stack to 1.6 million. Wasserson tapped the felt and then headed for the payouts.

Shack-Harris Isn't Greedy

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Scotty Nguyen bet 40,000 from the small blind into three players on {4-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Only Brandon Shack-Harris, in late position, called. Shack-Harris called another 120,000 on the {4-Spades} turn and another 200,000 on the {6-Hearts} river, the latter after some thought.

"Straight," Nguyen announced, tabling his {5-}{3-}.

Shack-Harris had it beat with {q-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for queens full.

"You let me get away with all that money, baby," Nguyen said.

"I'm not greedy," Shack-Harris responded.

Giannetti Doubles on the River Against Kurshumi

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Two players limped in and Matt Giannetti raised to 86,000 on the button. Ardit Kurshumi potted in the small blind and Giannetti tossed in a reluctant call after some thought for his stack of 257,000. Kurshumi had the goods with {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Giannetti needed help with {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. The {3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop brought some with a pair and a gutter. The {10-Diamonds} turn missed Giannetti but the {k-Clubs} river gave him a winning set.

Shack-Harris Forces a Fold from Makarov

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

From a middle position, Brandon Shack-Harris made it 32,000 and two players joined him to the flop as Mack Lee flatted on the button and Alexey Makarov came along from the big blind.

The {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{9-Hearts} flop ceased fire but Shack-Harris tossed in a delayed c-bet on the {2-Hearts} turn, making it 42,000. Lee wasn't interested but Makarov called to see the river.

The {10-Diamonds} completed the board and Makarov checked again. Shack-Harris reached to his stack and moved a 20-tall tower of 5,000-value chips on the side. But he didn't use them and rather took a chunk of his green chips, firing 150,000. Makarov, who's been making his decisions rather patiently all day, folded very fast for his standards.

Sammartino Times Out

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 0 ante

Dario Sammartino was out of position in a blinds battle with Richard Lyndaker on {9-Spades}{7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{7-Spades}{j-Clubs}. Sammartino checked on the river and was facing a bet of 120,000. He went into the tank for several minutes and attempted to glean a read from staring at Lyndaker. It must not have been successful as the tanking continued until someone called a clock. With 30 seconds to go, Sammartino resumed staring at his foe, only tossing in his cards just as they were being declared dead.
