It is the only tournament of this variant of poker on the schedule at the 2022 World Series of Poker and the players showed up on Day 1 of Event #60: $10,000 Short Deck No-Limit Hold'em to say they want more. It was a record-breaking turnout for this steep of a buy-in that saw a total of 102 entries recorded through the opening eight levels of play.
Only 37 players bagged up chips to return for Day 2 of this event, but late registration is still open until the start of the day so that number could still increase. It was an action-packed start to this event with many players being forced to the registration desk for a second bullet throughout the day. When everything settled at the end of the night, it was Elio Sion who bagged the chip lead with 372,000 chips.
There are many other notables at the top of the leaderboard including Stephen Chidwick (352,000), Ben Yu (314,100), Mike Watson (298,200), Anson Tsang (281,500), and Todd Ivens (260,800) to round out the top 10. The defending champion Chance Kornuth is also still alive in hopes to win back-to-back titles and his second WSOP bracelet as he bagged up a healthy 196,700 chips.
You can expect the action to be fast-paced again today, especially in the opening levels before the money bubble is reached. The game of short deck allows for stronger hands to be made and more possibilities of draws being completed. For any new entries to start the day, they will be given a starting stack of 60,000 chips with no possibility of any add-ons.
The cards are scheduled to go in the air at 2 p.m. local time and the plan is to play down to the final five players although that is known to be up for discussion. The blinds will resume on level 9 with the ante at 1,200 and the button ante equalling 2,400. The levels will continue to be 60 minutes in length with a 15-minute break after every two levels and a 60-minute dinner break after level 14. Each player will also receive an additional six time banks to start the day.
