Final 179 Players Head Down the Backstretch of $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.

Andre Akkari
Andre Akkari

Just under half of the original field of 328 entries remains in the final mixed-game event of the 53rd World Series of Poker, with Brazilian star Andre Akkari (262,100) pacing the final 179 players chasing the money on Day 2 of Event #84: $3,000 H.O.R.S.E.

The final 50 players Friday will receive at least $4,800, with the winner on Saturday taking home $205,139 and a prestigious WSOP gold bracelet.

With the majority of the original field still around, that means plenty of bracelet winners and stars remaining to follow including Joey Coudon, who sits not far behind Akkari in third place to start the day with 178,100 chips. Three-time bracelet winner David Bach (130,300), five-time bracelet winner Adam Friedman (114,700), 2022 WSOP Player of the Year leader Dan Zack (112,700), and Poker Hall of Famer Todd Brunson (102,400) are just a few big names with a 100,000+ chip stack to start the day.

While still alive, some of those with a hitch in their giddy-up to start their day include multi-time bracelet winners Phillip Hui (30,000), Ben Yu (26,300), Jeff Madsen (19,900), and Jason Mercier (19,900). They’ll need to crack the whip early to boost their short stacks into contention.

Defending champion Jim Collopy is also still in the field with a stack of 46,900, but he’ll have some work to do to get into contention to defend his title.

Day 2 gets underway at 2 p.m. local time in the gold section of the Bally’s Event Center with Level 11 kicking off ten more levels of play that will have 15-minute breaks after every second level and a 60-minute dinner break after Level 16 at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Last year, from a 282-entry field, just 20 remained by the end of Day 2, so it will be exciting to see how far the field gets thinned from its 328 in the starting gates this year.

PokerNews will have all the action, so keep it right here for your updates as the final week of the World Series of Poker continues in its new home at Bally’s and Paris, Las Vegas.

Buchalter Make a Good Hand, Violette Not So Much

Yehuda Buchalter: {5-}{6-}{x-}/{9-}{a-}{2-}{4-}
Cyndy Violette: {2-}{4-}/{5-}{3-}{q-}{k-}/{10-} - folded seventh

Action picked up on seventh with Yehuda Buchalter betting the final street. Violette thought for a bit. She didn't have much behind and the pot was large. She frustratingly folded, showing that she drew poorly on fifth, sixth, and seventh, hitting a {k-}{q-}{10-}, and was forced to concede the pot.

Buchalter showed the fifty-six hiding in the hole to console his opponent that she made the right fold.

Three players saw a flop of {8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{j-Spades}. DJ Buckley had less than one big bet behind in the big blind and committed it against Adam Friedman who made the call in late position.

Adam Friedman: {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}
DJ Buckley: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}

Needing to improve or see Friedman get counterfeited, Buckley saw the {q-Hearts} and {2-Diamonds} run out to give Friedman the full house and the winner.

Hellmuth Out of Two Tournament in Two Hours

Level 12
Phil Hellmuth
Phil Hellmuth

Omaha 8 or Better

Cards were turned over on the flop as Phil Hellmuth got the last of his 7,600 chips in on the small blind against Cody Espeseth in the big blind.

The board read {j-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{7-Spades} with Hellmuth holding top set with {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} against Espeseth's {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

The turn came with the {2-Spades}, giving Espeseth a low draw to go with his gutshot Broadway draw, and it was that which came in on the river with the {10-Spades} to send Hellmuth to his second rail of the day.

Bach Makes Eight Perfect

David Bach: {8-}{3-}{2-}/{4-}{k-}{a-}{q-}
Jay Hong: {x-}{x-}/{7-}{9-}{a-}{3-}/{x-}

David Bach raised with a four showing and both Jay Hong and David "ODB" Baker called.

On fourth, Bach hit an ugly king, and Hong bet his nine. Again, both other players came along with a call.

Fifth street gave Bach and Hong each an ace. Hong bet, this time Baker folded but Bach called again to head to sixth.

Hong bet when he hit a three, and even though Bach hit a queen, he called.

On seventh, Hong slowed down and checked. Bach decided to bet, and Hong made the call.

Bach showed his eight-perfect that was good enough to take it down.

Elezra Becomes the Banker

Christina Hill: {x-}{k-}/{k-Spades}{5-Clubs}{q-Spades}/{x-}
David Benyamine: {x-}{x-}/{2-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades} - folded fifth

Eli Elezra completed to find a two-bet from Christina Hill. David Benyamine cold-called in between and Elezra called as well.

On fourth, the players checked to Elezra.

"Go ahead, we're all friends," he said as he checked as well.

Elezra drilled trips on fifth street after that free card. Hill fired for 8,000, Benyamine folded, and Elezra moved all in for 13,000. Hill called.

"I have trips," said Elezra.

Hill had a pair of kings, but two kings were folded earlier, so she was drawing dead after not pairing on sixth.

Elezra stacked his newly found chips. "Oh baby, back to starting stack. Anybody need any change or anything?" Elezra laughed.

Joseph Thomas: {x-}{x-}{x-}/{3-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}
Christina Hill: {x-}{x-}/{q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{10-Spades}{x-} - folded sixth street
Georgios Sotiropoulos: {x-}{x-}/{2-Clubs} - folded bring-in

Eli Eleza's Stud rush continued shortly after the previous hand he won, as after pairing his door card on fourth street, he tossed out a large bet and asked if he could put in a double bet "for old time's sake."

He pulled back some chips and kept the proper single bet amount of 4,000. He was called by Christina Hill and Joseph Thomas.

Fast forward to sixth street with the action still three-handed, Elezra made two pair on his board and bet. Thomas called, but Hill folded.

"He calls me drawing dead," Elezra playfully commented, before betting dark on seventh street.

Thomas then checked his hole cards and folded, sending the pot across the table to Elezra who then showed the {4-Spades} in the hole for a full house.

"If you love Stud, Stud loves you back."

Wise words from the Poker Hall of Famer as he stacked his chips to over 100,000.

Brian Hastings: {2-}{4-}/{a-}{5-}{8-}{3-}{2-}
Maximilian Schindler: {7-}{5-}/{a-}{10-}{10-}{9-}{j-}

Brian Hastings completed with his ace showing. Tomasz Gluszko called with a five in the door before Maximilian Schindler two-bet on a short stack. Hastings three-bet, forcing out Gluszko, while Schindler committed the rest of his stack.

"Fair fight," joked Schindler, when he saw Hastings had him dominated. After the first couple of cards ran out, it was pretty much over. "Less fair now," he said.

Hastings made a wheel, while Schindler's hand just got worse and worse so he was out the door.

Seventh was dealt down to all three players. Akkari first to act, he bet, and Blum quickly folded after seeing his final card.

Heins showed his two pair of kings and deuces, but Akkari had aces and fives for the better two pair to eliminate Heins.
