Lococo Bags Big After Six-Bet Bluff on Day 5 of Main Event World Championship

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Alejandro Lococo

An eventful Day 5 of the 2022 World Series of Poker Main Event saw a field of 380 players whittled down to just 123. The remaining players are all guaranteed $62,500, with the pay jumps on Day 6 coming with 98 ($73,100) and then 89 ($86,000) players remaining.

One name that stands out towards the top of the counts is Alejandro "PapoMC" Lococo who appears to have picked up where he left off last year when he finished seventh for $1,225,000 and is safely through to Day 6 with a stack of more than 10 million.

Since his deep run last November, Lococo has cashed for over $600,000 including two titles in the Czech Republic earlier this year. Here at the 2022 WSOP, the Argentinian has cashed in three events so far but nothing compared to his deep run in this year's Main Event.

The most eye-catching hand of the day came after the dinner break, after Lococo tangled with Karim Rebei who had led the remaining players going into dinner.

You can read the full hand history here, but Lococo's six-bet shove got through against Rebei and he vaulted up the counts. Lococo says the importance of this hand cannot be understated, calling it perhaps the most important hand he's played in his life so far.

"It's not my plan preflop to go all-in for 100 big blinds," he told PokerNews. "But I was playing for many hours with this player and there were many factors that went into the decision. I could spend many hours discussing it."

Did Alejandro Lococo Pull Off Best WSOP Main Event Bluff Since Moneymaker?

Some may think Lococo will be experiencing déjà vu heading into Day 6 for the second year in a row, but with a different stack size compared to last year, the Argentinian says it will not be the same at all.

"Last year I started Day 6 with a below-average stack, and this year I have much more, so clearly there will be different decisions and strategy, with different ranges and open raises."

Another notable making another deep run is, of course, defending champion Koray Aldemir. He spent most of Day 5 under the lights of the TV table, but took it in stride eliminating multiple opponents over the course of the day to bag a healthy stack.

Aldemir and Lococo are joined in Day 6 by 2020 WSOP Main Event champion Damian Salas (2,435,000), along with 2018 WSOP Main Event ninth-place finisher Antoine Labat.

Dan Smith

Several players who won their first bracelets here at the 2022 WSOP are still in contention for a memorable second, including Espen Jorstad, Andrew Yeh and Dan Smith. Smith nursed his short stack through the day, but with the help of some timely doubles he remained alive to bag 2,030,000.

"You kind of just have to play every hand the way it needs to be played," Smith told PokerNews. "The structure of the tournament does mean there is a lot of play and that does help. Having a short stack here is more valuable than in other tournaments.

"I am fully aware that the most likely result is that I'm not going to make the final table. But, I'm having a great time and I'm trying to enjoy the experience and do my best, and whatever happens, happens."

Other players through to Day 6 include the last remaining women in the tournament Shelby Wells (1,900,000) and Efthymia Litsou (11,675,000). They will be joined by bracelet winners Timur Margolin (1,095,000), Andrew Yeh (5,830,000) and Marco Johnson (2,820,000).

Players falling on Day 5 included Jake Schindler, Ali Imsirovic, five-time bracelet-winners Brian Rast and John Juanda, as well as former tenth-place WSOP Main Event finisher Gaelle Baumann.

Having played five-and-a-half levels on Day 5, play will resume halfway through Level 26 (40,000/80,000/80,000) at 1 p.m. local time in Bally's Event Center.

Stay tuned to PokerNews for all the updates as they happen as we get that one step closer to crowning a new poker world champion.

Zhang Gets Big Value from Smith

Zilong Zhang
Zilong Zhang

Zilong Zhang opened to 175,000 with {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} from under the gun and only Dan Smith called on the hijack.

The {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop gave Smith a pair as he had the {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. Action checked through. The {j-Diamonds} turn gave Zhang an open-ended straight draw and Zhang bet 235,000. Smith called.

Zhang made Broadway on the {a-Spades} river and sneakily checked the action to Smith who bet 600,000 with his two pair.

Zhang made it 2,230,000 and Smith called while taking a big hit to his newly found big stack.

"I bet too small there," commented Zhang.

Mermelstein Cracks Aces for a Huge Double Up Late in the Night

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Aaron Mermelstein
Aaron Mermelstein

Aaron Mermelstein raised it up from early position and Johan Schumacher three-bet to 500,000 on his left. The action folded back to Mermelstein who just called to see a flop of {q-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

Mermelstein check-called a bet of 400,000 from Schumacher and the {3-Diamonds} landed on the turn. Mermelstein checked again and Schumacher slid out a bet of 1,400,000. Mermelstein went into the tank for a couple of minutes before ripping all in for 4,480,000. Schumacher snap-called and the cards were on their backs.

Schumacher turned over {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} but was given the bad news as Mermelstein held {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} for a set of queens. The river was the {2-Clubs} and Mermelstein scored a double up.

Zhang Doubles Up Smith

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Zilong Zhang, with {q-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, opened to 120,000 and was called by Dan Smith in the big blind with {a-Spades}{2-Diamonds}.

Smith check-called bets of 85,000 and 225,000 to have the board show the {a-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}.

Smith checked again and Zhang went into the tank. He eventually settled on a jam to put the action on his opponent.

Smith asked Zhang what he thought he held and while Zhang was trying to conjure up a response, he called to scoop the pot.

The tournament clock shows 128 players left in the field as Day 5 of the Main Event begins to wind down. The remaining players are now going on their final break of the night and are scheduled to play for one more hour, which is half of the next level.

Brian Rast opened to 120,000 and Jon Gisler called in the hijack.

Rast continued for 130,000 on the {10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} flop and Gisler called. The turn was the {j-Hearts} and Rast sized up for 625,000. Gisler then shoved all in, covering Rast.

Rast had 1,675,000 and muttered to himself while counting out his stack before eventually calling.

Brian Rast: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Jon Gisler: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}

Rast held top pair but had been undone by the two pair of Gisler. The river {7-Hearts} bricked and the five-time WSOP bracelet-winner was sent to the rail.

Zhang Outflops Kings

Level 25 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Zilong Zhang
Zilong Zhang

Michael Pickett made it 120,000 with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} from middle position and Zilong Zhang called with {8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} from the cutoff.

The {a-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{8-Clubs} flop gave Zhang trips and Trickett checked it over to the Las Vegas resident. Zhang bet 85,000 and was called.

The {2-Clubs} turn prompted another check from Trickett and Zhang fired for 265,000. Again Trickett called.

With 1,090,000 in the middle, the {a-Clubs} hit the river, double pairing the board. Trickett made it a trio of checks while Zhang bet for a third time. He sent in another 1,120,000 into the pot to put Trickett in an awkward situation. Tricket ended up calling and saw that Zhang had rivered a full house.

Lococo Goes Lococo!!

Level 25 : Blinds 30,000/60,000, 60,000 ante
Alejandro Lococo
Alejandro Lococo

Alejandro Lococo raised it up from the hijack and Karim Rebei defended from the big blind. The flop came {9-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and both players checked to the {k-Spades} on the turn.

Rebei led out with a bet of 140,000 and Lococo raised to 485,000. Rebei responded with a three-bet to 1,135,000 and this is where things got interesting. Lococo announced a raise but put in the wrong amount, therefore was committed to a min-raise of 1,785,000.

Rebei took the opportunity to push out a five-bet to 4,000,000 which put Lococo into the tank for at least six minutes. After looking visibly distressed, Lococo eventually announced all-in for 5,710,000.

"Oops," Rebei said to the rail as he shrugged his shoulders. He still asked for a count and gave it some thought for a couple of minutes and even got the chips ready to call. However, Rebei opted to lay his hand down and Lococo flashed the {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} as he started clapping and shouting "Let's go!" as he dragged in a massive pot.

Koray Aldemir's impressive run the 2022 Main Event continued on the secondary feature table. He called Matthew Ezrol's 1,175,000 jam with this {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}.

Ezrol's {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} were ahead on the {8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop but Aldemir would make trips on the {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades} runout to send out the middle school math teacher.
