Hobbs Leads Final 123 Heading Into Day 6 of Event #70: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event World Championship

James Hobbs
James Hobbs

Out of a near record breaking starting field of 8,663 entries, just 123 players return for Day 6 of Event #70: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event World Championship at the 20222 WSOP at Bally's and Paris Las Vegas. Everyone who takes their seat today is guaranteed at least $62,500, but so deep in the flagship event of the poker calendar, all eyes must now turn to the stratospheric payouts that are suddenly within reach, as well as the opportunity to etch their name into poker lore.

James Hobbs leads the field coming into the day with a stack of 12,505,000, good for 156 big blinds. Close on his heels is one of two remaining women, Efthymia Litsou, sitting on 11,675,000. Aaron Mermelstein rounds out the top three with 10,680,000.

Several notables remain in contention, including two former WSOP Main Event champions in Koray Aldemir (3,800,000) and Damian Salas (2,435,000). Were Aldemir to go back to back in the main event, it would surely rank among the greatest achievements in poker since Stu Ungar won his third title in 1997. High stakes regular and gold bracelet winner Dan Smith also returns, sitting on 2,030,000 after nursing a shortstack for pretty much the entirety of Day 5.

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

Imran Bhojani opened to 175,000 in the cutoff and Matthew Su defended from the big blind. The flop came {j-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} and Su checked to Bhojani who continued with a bet of 150,000. Su check-raised to 450,000 and Bhojani called.

The turn brought the {10-Hearts} and Su put together a bet of 700,000 this time. Bhojani knuckled the table and slid his cards to the muck, allowing Su to drag in the pot.

Spitzberg Loses Flip to Radwan

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

Mohammed Radwan raised it up to 185,000 and then called the shove by Paul Spitzberg on the button for what appeared to be 1,595,000.

Paul Spitzberg: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Mohammed Radwan: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}

The {9-Spades}{3-Spades}{2-Spades} flop and {2-Hearts} turn were of no help to Radwan but he got there on the {a-Spades} river. "Always the last card, Spitzberg sighed before he headed to the payout desk.

At almost the same time, Timur Margolin was eliminated on the right side feature table as the field was reduced to the final 121 contenders.

Weis Dodges Everything to Double

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

Karim Rebei in the cutoff called a 160,000 raise before the flop as action folded around to Oliver Weis in the small blind. Weis shoved for 2,500,000, the original raiser folded, and Rebei went into the tank.

Rebei asked for a confirmation of the total before calling after several minutes. He showed {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and was up against Weis' {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

A collective gasp arose from the table as the flop came {3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, giving Weis top pair but Rebei a flush draw to go along with his two over cards. The {4-Spades} on the turn was safe for Weis and he secured the double up when the {6-Clubs} fell on the river.

"Yes," he yelled as the pot was pushed in his direction.

"How did you feel after the flop," a tablemate asked.

"I mean, it is what it is," Weis replied.

"You saw what he felt. He went oof," Rebei added, taking the hit to his stack in stride. "I'm a calling station."

Taylor Snaps Off Reed

Level 26 : Blinds 40,000/80,000, 80,000 ante

Robert Reed and Andy Taylor went heads-up to a flop of {k-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Reed tossed in a bet of 125,000 from the hijack and Taylor raised to 380,000 on the button. Reed called and the {a-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

Both players checked and the {a-Hearts} paired the board on the river. Reed sized up a bet of 590,000 and Taylor instantly flicked in a chip to call. Reed turned over {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs} but Taylor got there with {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts} for trip aces.

Michael Lavenburg opened to 160,000 from early position and was called by Jose Jaraiz in the small blind as well as Cedrric Trevino out of the big blind.

Both blinds checked on a flop of {2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{q-Clubs} and Lavenburg continued for 165,000. Jaraiz wasted little time in folding but Trevino decided to raise, making it 425,000 to go. After some consideration, Lavenburg released his holding to send an early pot Trevino's way.
