Poker Veteran Vonk Back for Another WSOP
Marcel Vonk has been attending the WSOP since 2009 and became the first Dutch player to win a bracelet the following year, taking down a $1,000 no-limit hold'em tournament for $570,960.
PokerNews caught up with Vonk, who has a PhD in physics and has written multiple books about his specializations, in the break of the $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw.
"I'm excited for the summer, I will be here for about a month to play all the weird mixed games, and I guess some hold'em if there's nothing else going on. I plan on skipping the Main Event, but might convince myself to play if I get a nice score."
When asked what keeps drawing him back to Las Vegas, he stated, "The World Series of Poker is the best poker series around, with the huge fields and all the mixed games, and of course, the bracelets. I've always wanted to become the first Dutch player with two bracelets, but I guess I'll set my goal at becoming the first one with two bracelets won in Vegas."
The WSOP is the place to be for all mixed games enthusiasts, as Vonk can attest. "I started playing mixed games because of the WSOP, because there simply isn't always a hold'em event to play."
The $1,500 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw was Vonk's first-ever cash in a mixed-game event in 2015, placing 17th for $3,154. Since then, Vonk has started playing all of the games available at the WSOP, but no-limit 2-7 remains one of his favorites, evidenced by his four cashes in this event throughout the years.
