Epparla Confused on the River

Curt Kohlberg opened the button to 100,000 and Ramana Epparla called in the small blind. Carmino Argiero also called from the big blind.
On the 3♦5♦2♥ flop, all three checked to the A♥ turn, where Epparla led out for 125,000. Argiero then raised to 500,000, Kohlberg folded, and Epparla called.
An 8♣ hit the river and before Epparla could make an action, Argiero slid out a bet.
"It's my action," said Epparla. "You're too excited," he added.
"I thought you checked," replied Argiero. Epparla did eventually check, Argiero bet 500,000, and Epparla folded.
