The Summertime Downswing Blues

Level 13

No-Limit Hold'em

In a heads-up pot on a board of 2J5, Ali Eslami checked in middle position and Christian Roberts bet on the button. Eslami called.

Eslami checked again on the 8 turn and Roberts bet 200,000. Eslami called. Eslami then led out for 350,000 on the K river and Roberts called, only to muck as Eslami showed 97 for a flush.

As the hand played out, the rest of the table was engaged in a discussion about variance, leading Jeremy Ausmus to reveal that his biggest downswing has been 70 buy-ins.

"I had a million-dollar downswing," Matusow told the table. "And I was playing $10ks."

"How is your biggest downswing 70 buy-ins?" an incredulous Brewer asked Ausmus.

"I had a million-dollar downswing," Matusow repeated.
