Christopher Vitch Leads After Day 1 of the $1,500 8-Game Mix

Day 1 of Event #21: $1,500 8-Game Mix 6-Handed attracted a field of 472 players, creating a prize pool of $637,200, and at the end of an exhausting 10 levels of play it is Christopher Vitch who leads the remaining players advancing to Day 2.

It was tight at the top between Vitch and Alex Luneau (72,400) for the chip lead at the end of the day, but Vitch eliminated David Bach in one of the last hands of the night where he flopped a flush against the Aces of Bach in Pot-Limit Omaha.

There were bracelet winners galore at the start of the day, with many names taking the opportunity to play in an oft-spread mix of poker variants such as 8-Game. These included David "Bakes" Baker, Chris Bjorin, Marcel Vonk, Kenneth Aldridge, Vanessa Selbst, Bruno Fitoussi, David Diiorio, Anthony Zinno, Jared Bleznick and Konstantin Puchkov. None of these players would advance to Day 2.

Early chip-leader was Walter Treccarichi who eliminated a player after flopping a set against his opponent's set of nines, but never really kicked on from his early peak and exited quietly shortly before the final break of the day.

Defending champion Paul Volpe registered late but didn't last long as he too was eliminated before the end of play.

There are still some big names left in the field ahead of Day 2, most notable of whom is Daniel Negreanu who bagged up 57,300 after chipping up early, and using relentless aggression in his pursuit of yet another deep run at this year's WSOP.

Other names include five-time bracelet winner Jason Mercier (11,700) and his wife Natasha Mercier (11,900), three-time bracelet winners Barry Greenstein (3,800) and Eli Elezra (22,400), and former November Niner Josh Beckley (33,000).

Seventy-one players will cash and the money bubble is expected to burst tomorrow, with 71st place worth $2,259. However, tomorrow is all about putting players in as good a position as possible for making a deep run towards the first prize of $145,577 and the much-coveted WSOP bracelet.

Bruno Fitoussi Eliminated in Three-Way All In

Level 4 : 250/500, 0 ante

Pot-Limit Omaha:

On a {4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} flop, Georgii Belianin had checked to Bruno Fitoussi, who bet 800. Jennifer Tilly called, and Belianin three-bet to 4,000. Fitoussi moved all in for 3,975. Tilly then moved all in, and Belianin called for his last 5,700.

Belianin: {6-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Tilly: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Fitoussi: {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}{3-Spades}

Both Tilly and Fitoussi had flush draws, but Fitoussi had the Ace of Clubs plus a gutshot straight draw to stay alive. However, they were both behind to the two pair of Belianin.

Fitoussi called repeatedly for a deuce, but the turn was the {6-Hearts} and the river the {4-Hearts}, meaning he was eliminated. Belianin almost tripled up.

Stage Set for Event #21: $1,500 8-Game Mix (6-Handed) Day One

2016 $1,500 8-Game champion Paul Volpe
2016 $1,500 8-Game champion Paul Volpe

The traditional 8-Game spread is famous for being played by some of the most talented poker minds the world has ever seen, with the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Alex Luneau, and Ben Sulsky all known for playing high stakes mixed games both live and online.

There are two 8-Game tournaments scheduled during this year's World Series of Poker. Later in the Series we have the prestigious Poker Players Championship, but today sees Event #21: $1,500 8-Game Mix (6-Handed) which was won last year by Paul Volpe.

Volpe famously declared to all and sundry that he was going to win the tournament, not only when he bagged on Day 1, but when he made the money and subsequently when he made the final table. Volpe took home $149,943 after beating a field of 491 entrants to take home his second WSOP gold bracelet.

Today players will face 10 levels with a starting stack of 7,500 chips starting at 3 p.m. There is no dinner break, just 15-minute breaks after every two levels. Late registration is available for six levels, meaning that registration itself will close at around 9:45 p.m. this evening.
