Kihara Makes a Move, Busts to Turner

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 400 ante

A big three-way pot that included Galen Hall in the cutoff, Naoya Kihara in the small blind, and Jon Turner in the big blind resulted in the elimination of Kihara. He drew two, as did Turner, while Hall took one card. Kihara then check-raised all in after a bet by Hall, and Turner eventually called. Hall folded.

Kihara showed {7-}{3-}{2-}{2-}{2-} for trip deuces, and Turner won the pot with {8-}{7-}{5-}{4-}{2-}.

"Can You Just Let Me Value Bet You One Time?"

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 400 ante

Dario Sammartino opened with a raise. He was called by both Jean-Robert Bellande and Shaun Deeb. Deeb then took one. Sammartino stood pat, and Bellande took two. Deeb led out with a bet of 10,500. Sammartino called, and Bellande quickly folded.

Deeb showed {9-}{8-}{6-}{4-}{3-}, but Sammartino showed {9-}{7-}{6-}{4-}{2-}.

"Can you just let me value you bet you one time?" Deeb asked. Sammartino just laughed.

This spawned some conversation at the table about the game of 2-7 No-Limit Single Draw.

"In my opinion, this is the purest form of poker," Bellande said. "It has everything. It has bluffs, it has math."

"I totally agree," Sammartino said.

Small Tidbits

Level 8 : 800/1,600, 400 ante

At the end of the last level, Darren Elias doubled up through Philip Sternheimer with {10-}{8-}{7-}{5-}{4-} versus {10-}{8-}{7-}{6-}{3-}.

Felipe Ramos entered when the level had just gone up and defended his big blind against a raise by Iraj Parvizi. Both players stood pat, and Ramos showed {J-}{8-}{7-}{4-}{2-}. Parvizi had a ten-nine and won the pot.

Mike Wattel opened and called a three-bet to 13,000 by Jean-Robert Bellande. Wattel drew one card, and Bellande stood pat. Wattel then checked and folded to a bet of 16,000 by Bellande.

Kassela Can't Get There

Frank Kassela

Under the gun, John Monnette raised to 2,800. Next to act, James Chen reraised to 9,500 total. Action folded around to Frank Kassela, who moved all in for a total of 36,025. Action folded back to Monnette, who followed suit with a fold. Chen asked for a count, then called the shove.

Chen stood pat, while Kassela drew one. Chen showed {10-}{9-}{5-}{4-}{3-}. Kassela showed {7-}{6-}{4-}{2-} and was drawing live, but a {2-} on the end paired him and dashed his hopes, eliminating him from the tournament. That was Kassela's second entry, so he has officially been eliminated.

Kassela was the first player to win a bracelet in 2-7 Lowball Single Draw this year when he locked up $89,151 for his victory in Event #13. Bernard Lee, who finished second in that event, is still alive in this tournament, albeit on his second bullet, as well. He has built up a healthy stack here on Day 1 and could be poised to make another deep run.

Leah Takes from Dehkharghani

Level 7 : 600/1,200, 300 ante

Iraj Parvizi raised to 3,000, and Mike Leah asked to see his stack before calling from the small blind. Ray Dehkharghani three-bet to 15,000 in the big blind, and Parvizi and Leah both called.

All three players drew one card apiece, and Leah checked. Dehkharghani bet 25,000, and Parvizi, who had slightly more than that behind, folded. Leah called, and Dehkharghani showed {9-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}. Leah had that beat with {9-}{6-}{5-}{3-}{2-} and pulled away at the top of the counts.

Owen Sent to the Rail

Adam Owen

Mike Leah raised to 3,000, and Iraj Parvizi called before Randy Ohel moved all in for around 38,000 in the big blind. Leah asked for a count and folded, as did Parvizi.

Soon after, Per Hildebrand raised, and short stack Adam Owen moved all in for 16,000. Hildebrand called and stood pat with a {9-}{6-}{5-}{4-}{2-}. Owen drew one card and showed a {9-}{6-}{4-}{3-}. The Brit needed a deuce to double, but instead, it was a blank that left Owen empty-handed with nothing to show for bullet number two.
