James Obst Leads the Final Nine in Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship

Level 20 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
James Obst

Another day is in the books for Event #26: $10,000 Razz Championship. It was Frank Kassela who started the day as the chip leader of the final 38 players. But Kassela and many others fell short of the money today. At the end of the night only nine were left standing and it was James Obst who led the way, bagging up 818,000 chips as players head into the final day of play.

Falling before the money were the likes of Chirs Geoge, Mike Leah, Scott Clements, Erik Seidel, and Brock Parker to name a few. Brian Rast also fell short of the money. He came into the day with one of the shortest stacks and didn’t even make it in time to see his final hand, and was anted away. It was Randy Ohel who was the stone bubble boy. On his final hand, Eric Kurtzman made a six-low and left Ohel drawing dead, bringing the final 15 players into the money with no hand-for-hand play.

Making the money but not going much further were Roland Israelashvili in 15th ($15,000), Ted Forrest in 14th ($16,437), Don Zewin in 13th ($15,437), Konstantin Maslak in 12th (18,668), Steven Chidwick in 11th ($18,668), and Owais Ahmed in 10th ($21,946). Ahmed almost made it through the day, but finally succumbed on the last hand of the night to Anthony Zinno.

The final nine players will return tomorrow at 2 p.m. PDT. PokerNews will be here with all the action so make sure to tune back in.

Maslak: {X-}{x-} / {3-}{K-}{8-}{8-} / {X-}
Zewin: {X-}{x-} / {3-}{10-}{2-}{2-} / {X-}

After a confrontation with Eric Kutzman, Don Zewin was left with just under 10,000. Kutzman made an eighty-six low against Zewin's ninety-seven, and that left Zewin extremely short on chips.

The next hand, Konstantin Maslak completed. Zewin called all in, and David "ODB" Baker called, as well, bringing three-way action to fourth street, with action between Maslak and Baker on the side.

On fourth street, Baker bet, and Maslak called. On fifth street, Baker checked, Maslak bet, and Baker called. On sixth street, both players paired up, so Maslak took the betting lead. He bet, and Baker called. On seventh, Maslak bet, and Baker called without looking at his card.

Maslak showed {10-}{6-}{4-} for a ten-eight low. Baker sweated his last card and turned up {6-}{4-}{3-} for the exact same low. Zewin showed {j-}{7-}{j-} for a jack-ten low, and he was eliminated while Baker and Maslak chopped up the rest.

Ted Forrest - 14th place

James Obst had the bring-in and Jyri Merivirta called. Ted Forrest came in for 2,000, as did Andrey Zhigalov.

Fourth street was checked round, but on fifth street, Forrest moved all in for his last 14,000. Zhigalov announced a raise and both Obst and Merivirta folded.

Obst: {X-}{X-} / {K-}{2-}{6-}
Merivirta: {X-}{X-} / {10-}{4-}{Q-}
Forrest: {K-}{8-} / {3-}{7-}{A-}
Zhigalov: {4-}{2-} / {J-}{3-}{5-}

With Forrest at risk, he first caught a jack as Zhigalov found a {7-} to leave him drawing dead.

Randy Ohel Bubbles!

Randy Ohel
Randy Ohel

As Frank Kassela was in the process of being eliminated on the adjacent table, Randy Ohel was awarded the unfortunate moniker of bubble boy when he busted at the same time.

Speaking to James Obst, he informed us that following an Eric Kurtzman complete, Ohel raised. Kurtzman called and led out on fourth before Ohel made it two bets to go leaving himself just 2,000 behind. Kurtzman raised and Ohel called all in.

Kurtzman: {2-}{4-} / {3-}{6-}
Ohel: {3-}{5-} / {8-}{Q-}

Obst then informed us that Kurtzman caught an {A-} on sixth street, and that would be the end for Ohel as he was eliminated in 16th place.
