Chance Kornuth Leads a Star-Studded Field in Event #68: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1 of the star-studded Event #68: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em has come to an end after ten levels, and none other than Chance Kornuth has bagged one of the top stacks after registering at the very last moment at the conclusion of the last break of the day. He bagged up 192,600 chips and looks to lock up his second WSOP gold bracelet.

The day began with about 400 entries but that number quickly multiplied, reaching a total of 1,349 entries at the start of Level 9 when registration was officially closed. The prize pool ballooned to a whopping total of $3,642,300, guaranteeing 203 players a minimum payout of $4,496. That number doesn't mean much to most, however, as the top prize is paying out $645,922 and a coveted gold bracelet. Last year's event attracted 1,125 entries, proving this level of buy-in is definitely attractive to players of all kinds.

Some of the notable players to make it through to Day 2 include Michael Delvecchio III (153,100), Matt Salsberg (111,500), Igor Kurganov (101,000), Dietrich Fast (98,500), Joe Serock (97,300), Valentin Vornicu (74,200), Ben Keeline (73,500), Dylan Wilkerson (64,500), David Pham (54,900), Natasha Mercier (54,000), Matt Affleck (52,300), Norberto Korn (46,100), DJ MacKinnon (38,600), Andy Frankenberger (33,500), Jonathan Little (31,300), Kevin Eyster (29,700), Everett Carlton (28,500), Daniel Strelitz (25,500), Gordon Vayo (25,300), Ray Romano (22,700), Marton Czuczor (22,300), John Racener (21,200), Ralph Perry (21,000), Jiachen Gong (18,000), Ryan Laplante (14,300), and Alex Keating (13,100).

As expected, with so many well-known players in the field, not everyone could make it through. Some of the players who took a shot today but were unable to make Day 2 included Kristen Bicknell, Jerry Yang, Cate Hall, Kitty Kuo, Tim Reilly, Mohsin Charania, Jason Koon, and Patrick Serda.

"I Just Busted a Main Event Champion!"

With about 10,000 in the pot already, on a board reading , 2007 WSOP Main Event Champion Jerry Yang found himself all in for his last 11,000 in the small blind, and was called by Chris Gee in the big blind.

Yang tabled for flush and straight draws, while Gee already had a straight with . The river was the and Yang was sent to the rail.

"It was nice playing with you, Jerry" said Gee as he raked in the pot. Yang wished the table luck and headed for the rail in Level 2 of the day.

"I just busted a Main Event champion!" exclaimed a smiling Gee. He has now jumped to the top of the counts with a healthy stack early on Day 1.

Welcome to the Opening Day of Event #68: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em

Day 1 of Event #68: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em starts up at 11 a.m. sharp for the start of yet another shot at a World Series of Poker bracelet!

Players begin with 15,000 chips and will battle it out for 10 60-minute levels. As usual, there will be a 20-minute break every two levels with a scheduled 90-minute dinner break after the sixth level of the day at approximately 5:40 p.m.

Late registration will close before the start of Level 9 at approximately 9:30 p.m.

The defending champion in this event is Andrew Lichtenberger who pocketed $569,158 and a gold bracelet for his win last year. We will definitely keep a close eye on him in the field and see if he can be the second player this summer to win the same event in back-to-back years.
