From Big Brother to the Big Blind

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Kevin Martin recently returned to poker after a short hiatus during which he competed in Big Brother Canada. Martin actually won the season and is back playing the other game he loves.

Sitting in the big blind, Martin faced a limp from the player in the small blind and raised to 1,200. The small blind called, and the flop was {6-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{3-Spades}. Martin bet 1,000, and his opponent check-folded.

1998 Champion Scotty Nguyen in the Field

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Next year will mark 20 years since Scotty Nguyen took down the 1998 World Series of Poker Main Event, and Nguyen has picked up two cashes at this year's World Series of Poker.

In this hand, Nguyen opened to 1,200 from middle position, and the blinds called. The blinds both checked the {5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} flop to Nguyen, who bet 2,500 and got two folds.

Nguyen currently sits on 44,000, down from what he started with at the beginning of the day but still enough to be sitting comfortably.

Hubbard Climbing

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

With a substantial pot of about 16,000 already brewing and the board reading {A-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, Stephanie Hubbard bet 6,300 from the big blind, and her lone opponent called from the button.

The {2-Spades} fell on the river, and Hubbard bet again, 9,000 this time. Her opponent went into the tank for about a minute before he ultimately folded, and Hubbard showed {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for flopped top two pair as she scooped the pot.

Paul Volpe Bets and Wins

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

With about 2,500 already in the middle on a {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop, the player in the big blind checked, and Paul Volpe bet 1,100 from the button. The big blind called.

The turn brought the {8-Spades}, and both players checked.

The river was the {4-Diamonds}, and the big blind checked. Volpe tossed out 5,100, and after some consideration, the big blind folded. Volpe took the pot.

Bruno Fitoussi Calls River, Left Shallow

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante

Bruno Fitoussi opened the action and picked up several callers, including Pam Buzzetto from the big blind.

The flop was {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{a-Spades}, and Fitoussi bet 6,200, shaking off everyone except Buzzetto. The turn was the {k-Hearts}, and another bet of 6,400 from Fitoussi saw Buzzetto raise to 15,000. Fitoussi called the raise, and the river {2-Clubs} completed the board. Buzzetto led out for another 15,000, and Fitoussi went into the tank. Around five minutes passed with Fitoussi alternatively staring at the board and into space. He eventually called.

Buzzetto tabled {q-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for a straight, and Fitoussi mucked.

River Value for Ravi Raghavan

Level 4 : 200/400, 50 ante
Ravi Raghavan
Ravi Raghavan

About half the table saw a flop of {4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}, including Ravi Raghavan in the small blind, who checked. Action checked around to the cutoff, and he bet 1,300 into an existing pot of approximately 3,000. Raghavan was the only caller.

The turn brought the {8-Clubs}, and both players checked.

The {J-Hearts} fell on the river, and Raghavan bet 2,000. The cutoff called and tabled {A-}{5-} for the flopped wheel, but Raghavan flipped over {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a turned nine-high flush to win the pot.
