Metaal Gets Lucky

Level 17 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Govert Metaal (as seen in previous event)
Govert Metaal (as seen in previous event)

It's unclear if it was all in pre-flop action or not but we arrived to the table with the chips already in the pot which was about 100,000 and the flop had just been fanned out which was {q-Clubs}{7-Spades}{2-Diamonds}. Govert Metaal was in late position and had tabled {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. Upeshka De Silva was in the hijack and had shown {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}.

The board looked great for De Silva but it ran out with the {3-Clubs} on the turn and the {k-Clubs} on the river giving Metaal a flush and keeping his hopes alive in this final event of the 2017 WSOP.

Dinner Break

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Here is a Look at three of the biggest stacks in the room. Matt Berkey is the current chip leader and Upeshka De Silva is in second place. There were a few stacks around 400,000 where Dan Heimiller sits. Play will continue in one hour after everyone is done chowing down.

Brar Chips Up

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jaspal Brar
Jaspal Brar

With about 28,000 in the pot and the board reading {k-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}, Jaspal Brar checked in the small blind. The player in the big blind bet 16,000. Brar then check-raised to 40,000 and the big blind called.

The turn was the {10-Clubs} and both players checked. The river was the {4-Hearts} and Brar fired out a bet of 60,000. His opponent tanked for a couple minutes before relinquishing his hand and sending the pot to Brar.

Sun Sets On Frank’s Grind

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Christopher Frank “couldn’t make any hands” after the break and he was all in for his last few chips holding {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}. He got four other callers though so the prospects looked grim.

The board ran out {j-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}.

One of the players turned over {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a flush and Frank was out.

That made six cashes for Frank this summer including his first WSOP bracelet in Event #33: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em for $384,833.

The summer sun of grind may have set in Vegas for the young Austrian, but many are predicting a bright future for Frank in the years ahead.

Berkey On Fire

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Matt Berkey
Matt Berkey

Matt Berkey was under the gun and opened to 10,000. A player in the big blind moved all in for what appeared to be 45,000 and Berkey called.

Berkey: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Big blind: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

The board ran out {j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Berkey spiked a set on the flop to eliminate his opponent.

As another hand was in progress on the table behind Berkey, we peered over to see him knock out another opponent, only this time he had pocket kings and hit a set. If Berkey continues this heater the field could be in big trouble as this Las Vegas pro knows exactly what to do with a stack. Berkey has six cashes so far and this will make seven. His deepest run came in Event #16: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em 6-Handed where he finished in fifth place for $87,141. Berkey does not have a bracelet yet but he has over a million dollars in WSOP tournament earnings and several final tables. Could this be his breakthrough year? Stay tuned.
