Tony Cooney, Shark Hunter

Tony Cooney just took 12,000 from Humberto Brenes. Cooney flopped top and bottom pair with a nut flush redraw. Brenes was ahead with top two pair and he picked up a second-nut flush draw. They both made their flushes on the river and Cooney took down the pot. He increased his stack to 97,000.

Since When Was Doyle Brunson Irish?

Can't Foil Doyle
Can't Foil Doyle
My resident Irish expert here is Mike Lacey. Well, I say expert, when in fact he's just an Irish drunk at the bar who knows his fellow countrymen better than I do.

Anyhow, according to Mike, there are at least seven players still flying the Irish flag, and he was able to confirm chip counts on a few of them:

Roy Brindley = 32,000
Sylvester Geoghegan = 23,000
Tony Cooney = 85,000
Dave Callaghan = 40,000
Marty Smyth = 18,000
Donnacha O'Dea
Doyle Brunson

Hoooooooold up... let's go back a second. Doyle Brunson?! Since when was he Irish?? Mike then went on to try and claim Hoyt Corkins, Andy Bloch, and any other American player who wandered into the vicinity... Sigh!

Hats Off to the WSOPE

With the players about to return to their seats after the dinner break, it seems a good time to say how very well-organsied this event has been so far. The dealers and floor staff have been superb, very few rulings have caused a fuss, and every challenge has been dealt with promptly in good spirits.

Of course the real challenge will come when the main event starts, across more than one venue, however if the events so far are anything to go by it should be a huge success.

Jools Rules

Julian "hartwith" Adamson, known to many as Jools, is another to join the Vos/Grundy "older than they look and in need of ID-ing" club. He's currently on 48K and very chirpy indeed, especially after eliminating Andy Black early doors.

According to young Julian, "Andy Black played his hand badly. With the blinds at 150/300, I raised it up to 1,050 with Q-Q-9-7 and received three callers, one of whom was Andy. There was a raising war on the Q-2d-6d, and once the hands were on their backs, I was surprised to see he was only drawing to one out with pocket deuces and no flush draw."

Although running well at the moment, Julian was once on the dizzy nosebleed inducing heights of 57K, but was taken down a peg or two when his opponent spiked a king for a straight with Q-J-10-9 vs. Julian's A-K-Q-10 on a 10-A-9 flop.

The Best Player in Europe?

Gus Hansen? Marcel Luske? Ram Vaswani? Andy Black? Roland de Wolfe?

Nope, it's none of the above, apparently it's Blackpool's Simon Zach.

If you type "best poker player in Europe" in the Google search engine you get the player profile of Mr Zach, who assures me that "Google never lies."

As a continual presence on the UK circuit, I know Zach better than most, and whilst he admittedly possesses a pretty sturdy record, I'm not sure he can be classed as THE best player in Europe.

But how can I disagree with the search engines? Hmm, I smell a rat...
