Welcome to the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe

Welcome to PokerNews' coverage of the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe. For the second year in a row, the Majestic Barrière Hotel in Cannes, France will play host to this wonderful series kicking off today and finishing on Thursday, October 4.

This year, seven bracelets will be given out along with plenty of prize money. On top of those seven bracelet events, the WSOP has added a €50,000 Cannes Majestic High Roller event with "unlimited rebuys" to further fuel the action. All of the bracelet events and the High Roller will be featured here on the PokerNews Live Reporting pages for your viewing pleasure.

Starting things off with a bang will be the €2,700 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold'em. Scheduled for three days, this one should really set the tone for the WSOP Europe and ignite the electricity in the air. A year ago, all eyes were on Phil Hellmuth and he inched his way towards the final table in the opening event. His run was cut short, though, as he fell in seventh place. Swiss player Guillaume Humbert won this opening event for €215,999 after defeating a final table that included players of six different nationalities. The entire field was 360 competitors strong.

The cards are scheduled to be in the air at 5:00 PM local time with eight 60-minute levels on the slate. Things don't kick off for a few hours, so until then you can find us down on the beach. Already at breakfast, Phil Ivey, Dan Shak and Winfred Yu were spotted, so the notables are flocking in. Be sure to check right back here for the coverage soon enough as you won't want to miss it!

Announcements Being Made; Players Getting Ready

The players are filing in and World Series of Poker Tournament Director Jack Effel has the microphone in hand given the pre-tournament announcements. Right now, the tournament board reads that 175 players are registered, but that number is growing every minute. Plenty of notables have been spotted included McLean Karr, Erik Cajelais, Dan Shak, Matan Krakow, Winfred Yu, Jeff Lisandro, Oliver Spiedel and Tristan Wade. Stay tuned for the kick off of the event in just a few moments.

Kings Early for Kuether

On the {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades} flop, Joe Kuether fired a bet of 475, but saw it raised to 1,250 from Erik Cajelais. After a minute, Kuether made the call to see the {5-Hearts} land on the turn. Here, Kuether check-called a bet of 2,000 from Cajelais.

The {4-Clubs} completed the board on the river and Kuether checked after a brief pause to think. Cajelais thought while staring at his opponent, then checked back.

Kuether rolled over the {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Cajelais mucked his hand.

Spiedel Bests O'Brien, But Still Down On the Day

Dan O'Brien checked the {K-Spades}{4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} flop and Oliver Spiedel bet 200. O'Brien check-raised to 500 and Spiedel called.

The turn was the {A-Hearts} and both players checked to see the {8-Spades} land on the river. O'Brien checked and Spiedel, with only 1,300 behind, bet 800. O'Brien called, but couldn't beat Spiedel's {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and mucked his hand.

Ivey... Has... Arrived

Level 1 : 25/50, 0 ante

Phil Ivey just strolled into the tournament room here at the Majestic Barrière Hotel with a big smile on his face. He looks happy and ready to go. Right now, Ivey sits in second place on the World Series of Poker Player of the Year leader board. He has 568.70 points and trails only Greg Merson, who has 581.13.

Merson is also in the field today seated at a different table. If you look at the WSOP POY page, Merson still sits with 481.13 points, but he has already made the WSOP Octo-Nine and guaranteed himself at least another 100 points.

Esfandiari Knocked Down

Antonio Esfandiari claimed that he wanted to gamble and made the call of his opponent's all-in bet on the board of {Q-Spades}{6-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Esfandiari might have been gambling a bit more than he'd have liked when his {7-Spades}{7-Hearts} only had outs to an open-ended straight draw against his opponent's {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The river completed the board with the {4-Hearts} and Esfandiari doubled up his opponent.
