Teisseire & Esfandiari Neck and Neck as Final 15 Head to Day 3

Level 17 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

The 2012 World Series of Poker Europe continued on Monday with Day 2 of Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em as the remaining 98 players of a 626-player field returned to battle down to the final 15. Leading the way is Antonin Teisseire, who bagged up 269,500, but the winner of the biggest buy-in poker tournament in history, Antonio Esfandiari, is just 5,500 behind.

The big story at the start of the day was who would make the top 63 and earn a piece of the €600,960 prize pool. Among the 35 players who came up short were Greg Merson, [Removed:163], Konstantin Puchkov, David Benyamine and John Tabatabai; however, the man who went the furthest with nothing to show was Jean Marie Morvan.

On the money bubble, action folded around to Dominik Nitsche in the small blind and he put in a raise. Morvan had 800 of his 1,300 stack in the big blind, and opted to call off the remaining 500.

Showdown
Nitsche: {K-Clubs}{3-Spades}
Morvan: {Q-Clubs}{3-Clubs}

The Frenchman was dominated and seemed a bit dejected as the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}{K-Diamonds}. Morvan finished as the bubble boy why those players still in the room applauded to celebrate making the money.

A little while later, a big hand developed when Tristan Wade moved all in from early position for 11,300 with {8-}{8-} and received a call from start-of-the-day chip leader Marvin Rettenmaier, who held {A-}{K-} offsuit in the cutoff. French pro Teisseire then moved all in over the top from the big blind with what turned out to be {A-}{A-}, and Rettenmaier opted to call off for over 30,000. Both Wade and Rettenmaier were at risk, but the former would be spared as the board ran out {K-}{4-}{8-}{4-}{10-} and he tripled with a full house; meanwhile, Teisseire took down a sizeable side pot and Rettenmaier was eliminated from the tournament in 47th place for €2,133. Wade would join Rettenmaier a short time later in 43rd place while Teisseire went on to capture the chip lead.

Other in-the-money finishers included Renaud Blangiardi (56th-€1,965), Roger Hairabedian (39th-€2,344), Daniel Weinman (35th-€2,608), Dominik Nitsche (34th-€2,608), Erik Cajelais (27th-€3,846), Gil George (25th-€3,846) and John Monnette (23rd-€4,489) and Andrey Gulyy (16th-€6,340).

While many fell, some survived and others even thrived. Among those returning for Day 3 are Day 1a chip leader Ashly Butler, Joe Kuether, Salvatore Bonavena, W.J. Vincent, McLean Karr and Casey Kastle.

Monnette's Day is Done

John Monnette
John Monnette

We didn't catch all the details as we were busy catching a controversial hand, which we'll be writing about next, but we do know that John Monnette was just eliminated after getting all in preflop with {A-}{8-} only to run into the {A-}{K-} of Igor Kalinicenko. Monnette would not improve as the board ran out {2-}{Q-}{J-}{7-}{6-} and his day came to an end in 24th place.

Esfandiari & Monnette Seeking More POY Points

Level 12 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Antonio Esfandiari
Antonio Esfandiari

The Player of the Year race is a heated affair here in Cannes, and we actually have two players in the top three still alive in this event: Antonio Esfandiari and John Monnette.

Esfandiari currently sits in third place with 513.10 points, while Monnette is in second with 524.25 point. Both men trail Phil Ivey (568.70 points), but it's important to remember that Greg Merson, who is amongst the finalists of the WSOP Main Event, has 481.13 points and will earn an additional 100-500 points depending on where he finishes in Las Vegas. In other words, Merson is unofficially in first.

The winner of this event will receive 170 WSOP POY points, while second and third will get 119 and 85 points respectively. No matter what these two men will add points to their total, but they have the opportunity to vault into first place with a deep run.

The current WSOP Player of the Year standings can be found here.

French pro Antonin Teisseire then moved all in over the top from the big blind with what turned out to be {A-}{A-}, and Rettenmaier opted to call off for over 30,000.

Oh No, Lanosga!

Randolph Lanosga
Randolph Lanosga

A short-stacked Randolph Lanosga moved all in from the hijack for around 5,000 only to have Guy Pariente move all in over the top from the button. Both blinds got out of the way and the hands were turned up.

Showdown
Lanosga: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Pariente: {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}

Lanosga was left shaking his head after the board ran out {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and he was left with nothing more than a min-cash.

October Niner Doubles Through Monnette

Greg Merson
Greg Merson

Greg Merson and John Monnette have enjoyed quite a bit of success in 2012. Both won a bracelet this past summer in Vegas, both are in contention in the WSOP Player of the Year race (Merson currently leads), and both are still alive in today's tournament.

In a recent hand, Renaud Blangiardi opened for 1,250 from early position only to have Monnette three-bet to 3,050 from the cutoff. Merson then four-bet all in from the button, Blangiardi folded and Monnette made a hesitant call.

Showdown
Merson: {A-Spades}{9-Spades}
Monnette: {9-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

Monnette was unhappy to see that he shared a nine with Merson, and rightfully so as his chances of winning were slim. The {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{2-Spades} flop was dry for Monnette, while the {A-Clubs} turn left him drawing dead. The meaningless {J-Diamonds} was put out on the river and Merson, who made the final table of the Main Event as is a member of the October Nine, received a double.

Marvin Rettenmaier
Marvin Rettenmaier

Over the weekend, the 2012 World Series of Poker Europe saw two starting flights in Event #2: €1,100 No-Limit Hold'em play out. The combined fields of Day 1a (295 entries) and Day 1b (331 entries) saw 626 take to the felt and create a prize pool of €600,960, which will be distributed to the top 63 with €126,207 reserved for the winner. After just over nine levels of play, just 98 players remain with Marvin Rettenmaier and his stack of 69,950, more then 20,000 more than his nearest competitor, leading the way.

Among the returning players are quite a few notables including Tristan Wade, Dominik Nitsche, Joe Kuether, Erik Cajelais and John Monnette, all of whom finished toward the top of the Day 1b chip counts after exercising their re-entry option. They, along with John Tababtabia, Roger Hairabedian, Jean Paul Pasqualini, Bourcier de Carbon, and Gil George, will join the likes of Day 1a’s Ashly Butler, Antonio Esfandiari, Mclean Karr and Antonin Teisseire. Needless to say, there isn’t a shortage of recognizable faces.
