Heartbreaking River for Brammer

Stephane Albertini hits his flush!
Stephane Albertini hits his flush!

Not too long ago we saw Christopher Brammer catch a heart on the river to extend his tournament life, but now he was on the opposite end of the same situation. It happened when action folded to Stephane Albertini in the small blind and he moved all in for 615,000. Brammer took his time in the big before making the call with what turned out to be the best hand.

Showdown
Albertini: {K-Hearts}{4-Hearts}
Brammer: {A-Clubs}{6-Hearts}

The flops have been interesting so far today, and this one would be no different as it came down {A-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Brammer paired his ace, but Albertini had picked up a flush draw. The {10-Clubs} river was nothing special, and Albertini was drawing to eight outs headed to the river. Wouldn't you know it, the {J-Hearts} plopped down and Albertini survived while delivering a crippling blow to Brammer's stack.

Baranov Rivers Nuts; Takes Over One Million From Cheong

Joseph Cheong raised to 65,000 from the cutoff and it folded to Sergii Baranov who called from the big blind.

The flop came {J-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and Baranov led into Cheong for 75,000. Cheong called and the {K-Spades} came on fourth street. Baranov checked and Cheong fired 145,000. Baranov called and the {8-Spades} finished the board.

Baranov checked for a second time and Cheong fired 375,000. Baranov would not be swayed, however, as he moved 1,075,000 into the middle.

"I call," said Cheong.

Baranov showed {7-Spades}{5-Spades} for the nuts and Cheong mucked his hand. Baranov is now sitting on 4.845 million while Cheong has fallen to 1.95 million.

Baranov Releases Queens

Sergii Baranov opened for 60,000 under the gun and received calls from Phil Hellmuth and Joseph Cheong in the cutoff and button respectively. The {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop saw Baranov lead out for 90,000, Hellmuth raise to 200,000, and Cheong fold.

Baranov made the call and then check-called a big bet of 300,000 on the {2-Spades}. When the {9-Hearts} peeled off on the river, Baranov checked for a second time and Hellmuth bet 650,000. Baranov thought for a long time before asking Hellmuth if he would show if he folded. Hellmuth said that he would and Baranov folded {Q-Spades}{Q-Diamonds} face up, and the "Poker Brat" tabled {Q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a rivered straight.

Albertini Ships Half Of His Stack to Baranov

Phil Hellmuth had the button. Christopher Brammer got out of the way and Sergii Baranov made it 60,000. It folded all of the way around to Stephane Albertini's big blind and he called.

The flop was {4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Albertini check-called a bet of 90,000. The {J-Diamonds} fell on the turn and Albertini checked a second time. Baranov moved 120,000 into the center. Albertini dipped into his stack and came out with a check-raise to 295,000. Baranov wasted no time calling and the {4-Spades} paired the board on the river.

Albertini checked and Baranov bet 300,000. Albertini went into the tank for over a minute.

"You have king-queen?" said Albertini, trying to figure out the hand.

Eventually Albertini gave up and let go of his hand. Baranov showed {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for trip fours and took down the pot. He is now over four million in chips while Albertini has fallen to 670,000.

Brammer One Card Away From Elimination

Christopher Brammer doubles up on the river.
Christopher Brammer doubles up on the river.

Action folded to Christopher Brammer on the button and he moved all in for 430,000. Phil Hellmuth asked for a count from the big blind and ended up making the call.

Showdown
Hellmuth: {5-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Brammer: {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Hellmuth used pocket fives to knock out Stephane Girault, and he was looking to do it to Brammer as well. The {8-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Hearts} made that a strong possibility as it gave Hellmuth a set, but it also gave Brammer a flush draw. The {K-Spades} turn was of no consequence, and Brammer needed to catch a non-eight heart on the river to stay alive. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {3-Hearts}. Brammer spiked his heart and his supporters went wild on the rail; meanwhile, Hellmuth sat silently while staring at the board.

Paul Tedeschi Eliminated in 6th Place (€149,184)

Paul Tedeschi - 6th Place

Joseph Cheong had the button. Sergii Baranov raised to 60,000 from under the gun and it folded to Paul Tedeschi who moved all in for his last 470,000 from the cutoff. Cheong peeked at his cards on the button and announced a flat call.

It folded back to Baranov who thought for about a minute before letting go.

Tedeschi: {A-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Cheong: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} giving Tedeschi a diamond draw on top of his ace for outs. The {3-Spades} bricked out for him on fourth street and the board finished off with the {2-Hearts}, allowing Cheong's queens to hold and sending Tedeschi to the rail as our 6th place finisher.

Stephane Girault Eliminated in 7th Place (€108,864)

Joseph Cheong opened for 65,000 under the gun and received a call from Phil Hellmuth on the button. Stephane Girault then moved all in from the small blind for 300,000 more, Cheong folded, and Hellmuth made the call.

Showdown
Girault: {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Hellmuth: {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}

"I've got a good feeling about this one," Hellmuth said. It looked like he may have spoke to soon as the {7-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop delivered an ace and gave Girault the lead. With that said, the {6-Spades} turn sent a wave of, "Ahhhh's," through the room as it gave Hellmuth an open-ended straight draw and ten outs.

Wouldn't you know it, the {4-Diamonds} river was one of them as Hellmuth straightened out Girault and sent him home in seventh place for €108,864.

Joseph Cheong: Three Million Dollar Man

Joseph Cheong Cracks Three Million
Joseph Cheong Cracks Three Million

Christopher Brammer held the button. It folded around to Joseph Cheong in the hijack who made it 65,000. Sergii Baranov called from the small blind and Phil Hellmuth tagged along from the big.

The trio saw a flop of {10-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{A-Diamonds} and there were two checks to Cheong. He continued for 65,000 and Baranov got out of the way. The {8-Clubs} turned and both players checked to see the {4-Spades} hit the river.

Hellmuth checked for a third time and Cheong reached into his stack. Cheong moved forward a bet of 220,000 and after about twenty seconds Hellmuth called.

Cheong wasted no time flipping up {4-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} for a rivered set of fours.

"GOD!" yelped Hellmuth as he shot out of his seat. He showed {10-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} for a pair of tens and the second best hand. By winning this pot Cheong is now over three million in chips.

Jason Mercier Eliminated in 8th Place (€84,672)

Jason Mercier - 8th Place
Jason Mercier - 8th Place

Stephan Girault held the button. Action folded around to Jason Mercier in middle position and he moved his short stack of roughly 465,000 all in before the flop. Sergii Baranov called from the next seat over and the rest of the table folded.

Mercier: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Baranov: {A-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The flop came down {7-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{J-Spades} and was of no help to Mercier. The {K-Hearts} paired Baranov on the turn and Mercier needed a ten on the river to stay alive. Unfortunately for Mercier, the {2-Diamonds} rolled off on fifth street and he officially became the first casualty of this final table.
