Kassel-Out; Lievens Also Leaves

Penned by MarcC, but owing to the internet suddenly turning slow (we see you on your ipads, poker players!), posted on the one computer that seems to be running fine:

We missed Frank Kassela’s exit but Leiven Ketels got his last 2,200 in from early position and was looked up by Willie Tann in the BB. Showdown:

Ketels: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Tann: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{9-Spades}{q-Clubs}

The board ran {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs}

Tann made a better two-pair on the turn to scoop the pot.

Gryko No Like-O

Like some kind of competitive gardening scenario, a brief potting war broke out between Richard Gryko (late position) and Joe Serock (big blind). The chips all went in (their stacks were very similar, with Serock only just covering Gryko), the cards were on their backs, and a board was dealt.

Gryko: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}
Serock: {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Flop: {5-Hearts}{3-Spades}{8-Clubs} - nothing for anyone there.

Turn: {2-Clubs} - a grinning Serock pointed to the two clubs in his hand...

River: {7-Clubs}

Serock's flush came in and Gryko, busted but still smiling, said, "Well, I didn't deserve that." Whether or not it was deserved, Gryko was gone, and Serock moved up to a very respectable 70,000 or so.

Lind Has His Hide Tann'd

"Phil! Phil!"

Willie Tann was calling over to fellow six-max finalist (indeed, bracelet winner) Phil Laak; his purpose was to alert Laak to his (Tann's) double up which was in progress.

Tann: {a-Spades}{2-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}
Oskar Lind: {6-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}

Board: {q-Spades}{5-Spades}{9-Hearts}{8-Spades}{4-Spades}

Tann's aces turned into a flush by the end, and he doubled to over 65,000. Lind meanwhile looked as though he might be sick and was left with mere shrapnel.

Lind pushed for his last 2,700 the very next hand with {8-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{10-Spades}. Alfonso Amendola looked him up from the big blind with an esoteric sort of {k-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{8-Hearts} which in the event made a full house on the {8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{8-Spades} board to eliminate the luckless Lind.

Pushed out to Sea

Samuel Stein has moved up to a chip-lead extending 145,000 after eliminating Ross Boatman. Karl Mahrenholz opened with a 2,400 raise from early position that was called by Barry Greenstein before Boatman three-bet to 11,100. Stein made a quick call from the BB but the other two folded.

The flop came {8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and Stein set his opponent all in. Boatman snap-called with {4-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} for a set and was up against the drawing {q-Hearts}{j-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}. The turn came {6-Diamonds} and river {7-Diamonds} to make Stein’s straight. Boatman shook hands and wished everyone well before making a hasty exit.

Jachtmann Eliminated

Barry Greenstein adds to his modest but apparently rock-solid chip towers by taking out the short stacked Jan Jachtmann with a relatively small preflop call of his shove with {Q-Spades} {4-Spades} {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds}. Jachtmann showed {A-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {6-Hearts} which didn't make the winning broadways straight like Greenstein's hand did on the {K-Spades} {A-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} {3-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} board.

This table is eating through players at a fast rate, and stacks like Chris Bjorin's are feeling the benefit - he's now on 150,000+. Full chip counts at the break in 20 minutes.

Fingernails Plenty Strong to Hold Short Stacks in Tournament

As Paul Zimbler said, chugging along with around 15,000, "Omaha tournaments! Love it, could have 150k in the next ten minutes! I've come back with a tenth of the average and won before!"

This gives hope to all the small stacks who could in a matter of moments be big ones - and looking round in the last few minutes there have been several all-in life-on-the-line moves but no bustouts. The pick of the lot:

Tim Flanders shoves preflop over the top of a Willie Tann raise (Tann being another first event finalist success story, now with 80k!) for just 4,500 more. Tann says, "You don't want me to call," which sounds a bit like a question. Flanders says, "If you've got a pair, you should call," at which point Tann passes and Flanders shows him {A-} {A-} {Q-}...

Aarno Kivelio gets it all in preflop for what looks like just over one big blind, but finds Robin Keston raising to 10,700 and picking up surprise button caller Yasuhiro Waki who bet him off the now large sidepot on a {9-Spades} {4-Clubs} {7-Hearts} flop. Kivelio managed to hold for his bowl of rice and is still kicking...

Mathews doubles

Chip leader Sam Stein has doubled-up the dangerous Rory Mathews to around 60,000. Stein called an 8,500 Mathews' bet on a {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{7-Spades} flop before betting enough to cover the Scot on the {5-Spades} turn. Mathews did a Hellmuth style call prompting Stein to ask "Do you have a full-house?"

Mathews nodded and tabled {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} to Stein's {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. The river came {8-Hearts} and Mathews raked in the pot. Stein still going very strong on 115,000.

Fingernails Still Holding

No need for Paul Zimbler to get a manicure just yet - he shoved his last 4,000 into the middle to a raise from Felipe Ramos, and when he got them back they had turned into a slightly healthier 9,000.

Zimbler: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{a-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Ramos: {a-Hearts}{k-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}

Board: {10-Spades}{6-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

Ramos is now also looking a bit precarious - he's down to 21,000.

Christopher/Robin

Christopher Chau has doubled through Robin Keston giving him over 35k and a little breathing room. Keston's been a bit of a high-gear operative on his table recently, picking up quite a few small pots (such as the five way limped one he immediately announced, "Pot" on preflop and got instafolds all round) but a dent was made as Chau called a 4k bet on a {6-Clubs} {A-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} flop and then shoved first to act on the {Q-Spades} turn. Keston thought about it but eventually pushed in the 11k - Chau showed down {Q-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {4-Diamonds} for the turned set and although Keston instantly mucked his hand as the bricky {2-Hearts} river came down he made a frustrated sort of face which said it all.
