Event #4: £10,350 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller Heads-Up

Day 1 Started

Here's a Heads Up

Good afternoon and welcome back to the by now very familiar locale of the Empire Casino, where the £10,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller Heads-Up will be starting at 5pm local time.

This is the first time that the WSOPE has featured an open heads-up event - in previous years this spot has been filled by various mixed events and/or the Caesars Cup invitational, if you remember that one from last year. Bearing that in mind it's rather difficult to predict numbers - there were around 50 registered last night but that will have most likely swelled by the time we get going - but however many they get, judging from the quality and familiarity of the fields we've been getting so far, it's going to be a lot of fun.

It's far too early for anyone who doesn't have an appointment with the £1k NLH event to be out of bed, but we'll be back in around 90 minutes for kickoff. Please stand by.

Dealers: Ready

In the interests of efficiency the large ten-seater tables have been set up so that at each end is a dealer and side by side along the long parts sit pairs of heads-up contenders facing off. It does look like they're about to start a Casino Employees heads-up event though.

They're yet to know who their first opponents are to be, though - registration is being kept open until the last possible moment at 5pm - but then "instantaneous computerised random draw" will have their names up on the screens. Sounds advanced.

Not Yet, But Soon

We're still a good half hour or so off starting, but it looks like this is going to be a relatively big one - we've got 80 players registered already. There's a bracelet ceremony to get out of the way first, but players will soon be taking their seats at the particularly roomy tables. Back soon...

Here's One We Awarded Earlier

Jeffrey Lisandro's bracelet-awarding ceremony is underway now before the heads-up kicks off - having eschewed any media interaction on the day, it seems he's ready to accept a little limelight, and an impressive fifth WSOP bracelet, his first in Pot Limit Omaha. A round of applause from the rail who actually look to be mostly the same crowd who've been here all week, and the £1,000 event carries on while players crowd the screens where we hear the draw will be available within the next 15 minutes.

Live Draw Coming Up

British sports fans will be used to live draws for knockout competitions like the FA Cup (soccer competition) but American sports events are a lot more structured. Nearly 100 players have registered so far and all these names(lots) will be put into a "digital" hat and drawn out at random. There is no seeding system in place so Phil Ivey has just as must chance of drawing Tom Dwan in round one as he has a local rich business man. Unless we reach 128 entries there will be some players receiving byes into round two.

Who's Keen?

The draw has been done, and players filtering into the main room upstairs so far include John Racener, Vanessa Rousso, Arnaud Mattern and Jason Mercier - the latter looking a wee bit fuzzy as he failed to go to bed at all after winning a WCOOP at 11.30 this morning.

Good luck, everyone!

Bye Bye

We up ended reaching 104 players by the time the draw was carried out so 24 players will head of into the London evening and be back at 10pm for round two.

The lucky few are:

Howard Lederer
Joel Nordkvist
Martin Kabrhel
Matt Jarvis
Jim Collopy
Scott Fishman
Scott Seiver
Sorel Mizzi
Daniel Steinberg
Greg Mueller
Justin Adams
Marius Tobergsen
Melanie Weisner
Neil Channing
Faraz Jaka
Jani Sointula
Erik Sagstrom
Gus Hansen
Chris Ferguson
Andrew Feldman
Nikolay Evdakov
John Juanda
Brian Powell
Chance Kornuth

There would've been a lot of players hoping to see almost all of the list above eliminated in the first round. The second round, therefore, is already full of banana skins!
