Day 1b Decelerates, Concludes; Mitchell Chip Leader

209 players stumped up the £10,000, won a satellite, or sold bits and pieces of themselves until entry became realistic in order to compete in the second and final entry day into the 2010 WSOPE Main Event. This made it a record-breaker, and is going to provide a very healthy prizepool for those who make it even further; this is a six-day event and definitely falls in the 'marathon' rather than 'sprint' category.

The field was liberally scattered through with TV and internet-gracing faces, from Tom Dwan and Victor Blom (the latter making it through) to a more audible Mike Matusow, Andy Black, Neil Channing, Freddy Deeb and Phil Laak. The Devilfish didn't make it through the day, nor did WSOP ME champion Noel Furlong, but plenty of previous bracelet-holders came through with good stacks, among them Phil Ivey and Phil Laak with just under 100k, JP Kelly, Roland de Wolfe and last year's champion Barry Shulman. Playing on his birthday was also Charles Chua, Macau deep-runner who might have been short but who gave over his special day to the WSOPE with gusto.

Leading the field, and in fact, with a count of 178,850, the entire stock of both days' survivors, is Irish Open champion James Mitchell, whose chip towers are only slightly higher than those of John Dolan, with 173,700. He's second out of the November Nine, and he's second here going into Day Two.

The action will recommence tomorrow at 12pm local time, when a complete redraw will intersperse players from both flights, set up new table dynamics and create new leaders and losers. Racener Back to the Starting Line

Our last check on John Racener had him smiling and sitting pretty with about 90,000.

Our most recent drop-in, however, sees him scowling and sitting no-so-pretty with his starting stack of 30,000. We're not sure how it happened (we dare not ask him), but we do notice that table mate James Mitchell has 185,000. That's your chip leader, boys and girls.

While watching the action at Phil Ivey's table, a man came right up to the rail even leaning over and yelled, "Hey Phil! Phil Ivey!"

Ivey then looked up at the man as his attention was caught and the man continued.

"Remember this face, Phil!" he yelled, leaning further over the rail and pointing at his face. "I'm going to take your stack in 12 months!"

"OK, OK," Ivey said back, nodding his head with a smile.

Ivey's entire table got a laugh at this as the man walked off and away from the rail. "You better watch out," said Barry Greenstein seated across the table. "September 24, 2011, Phil, watch out and be ready," added Dan Shak.

Fight Night

We often see a slight slowdown approaching the end of the final level of a day, whether it be because of general tiredness levels rising, or a desire to come back fresh for a second day, but the last quarter hour of play upstairs at the Empire has been just as intense.

JC Tran, for example, just bet out 2,400 from the small blind on a {2-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {6-Hearts} flop at button Ludovic Lacay. Lacay calmly raised him to 6,200. Back to Tran who wordlessly reached back for 20k and threw it in. Lacay (now with 40k-odd) passed. Tran on over 60k.

Golser Still Chipping Up

A 3-way (assumed 3-bet) flop between blinds Erik Cajelais, Sam Trickett and Markus Golser was checked to the Austrian who bet a chunky 5,500 on a {2-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} {5-Spades} board. We thought fireworks might happen when Cajelais took a long time to think before folding, Trickett also took equally long, even teasing us by playing with some of his 5k chips but he folded too.

Golser has about 60,000.

Invader Zim-bler

With the board reading {4-Clubs} {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} {2-Spades} , it was checked across to Paul Zimbler on the button who bet 1,650. The small blind called but then Chance Kornuth in early position raised to 6,500. Zimbler made the call and the small blind folded.

The river was the {J-Diamonds} and Kornuth slowly checked, Zimbler checking behind. Kornuth flipped {K-Clubs} {10-Spades} and Zimbler showed {K-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} to pip him to the pot.

"Woooah," said an impressed William Reynolds, "I'm putting you on the radar with that one!"

Eric Mizrachi Inches From Felt, Then Off It Completely

A bad hand for Eric Mizrachi, but a full double up for Scott Palmer (one man's loss, in poker, is always another man's gain, unless it's the loss of a high value chip in the upholstery of a cab).

Mizrachi raised preflop and Palmer slowly called on the button. He was so quiet I didn't even notice he was in, because Phil Laak was keeping up a running commentary.

"Kid - you haven't raised me in a long time. I'm gonna fold. No, I'm gonna look, then I'm gonna fold."

In actual fact when it was his go he suddenly produced an awesome stage-villain laugh (Mwah-hah-hah-hah) and said, "I'm gonna play with you boys! Let's flop quads! Can't get much action, but it's still fun."

The flop: {8-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {10-Spades} . Check to Mizrachi who bet 4k. Button Palmer moved in for just under 20k. Call. Laak melted away silently from the hand.

Palmer: {A-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} The trips held and Mizrachi had a mere grain of rice for a stack, which was devoured soon after.
