Boivin Leads as 54 Players Advance from Day 3 of 2022 Wynn Millions; Moreno Looks to Defend

Level 18 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Thomas Boivin
Thomas Boivin

The 2022 Wynn Millions began with 1,075 runners, of which 154 players returned on Tuesday for Day 3 action. After five 90-minute levels of play, the field was whittled down to just 54 players with Thomas Boivin and his stack of 2.5 million leading the pack.

Perhaps the most interesting story is that of defending champ Andrew Moreno, who is looking to do the improbably by defending his title and going back-to-back in the first two Wynn Millions. If you recall, last July Moreno topped a 1,328-entry field to win the inaugural Wynn Millions for $1,460,106 after a three-way deal. Moreno knows what it takes to win, and he’s also on a bit of a heater after taking down the Venetian DeepStack Event #27: $2,500 Ultimate Stack last month for $242,293. Only time will tell if Moreno can repeat, but he’ll have 985,000 to work with on Day 4.

Others to make it through were Hyo Joo (2,080,000), Ian Matakis (1,775,000), Sylvain Loosli (1,305,000), Sam Soverel (1,300,000), Tony Sinishtaj (1,140,000), Shaun Deeb (1,015,000), Brock Wilson (530,000), and Vanessa Kade (485,000).

With only the top 116 getting paid, 38 players would leave empty-handed including Matas Cimbolas, Scott Ball, Matt Berkey, Christina Gollins, Steve Begleiter, and a trio of players who busted on the bubble (Leo Worthington-Leese, Ali Imsirovic, and Jake Schindler).

Once the bubble burst the in-the-money finished racked up quickly. Among those to earn a payday on Day 3 were Landon Tice (114th - $22,029), Tristan Wade (104th - $23,901), Aaron Massey (98th - $26,005), Scott Baumstein (88th - $28,475), Ben Yu (80th - $31,323), last year’s fourth-place finisher Salim Admon (74th - $31,323), JC Tran (73rd - $31,323), Daniel Lazrus (66th - $34,549), Nick Schulman (63rd - $34,549), and Johan Guilbert (55th - $38,384).

The surviving 54 players will return at noon local time on Wednesday for Day 4 action, which is slated to play five more levels. PokerNews will be on-site to capture all the action, so be sure to join us then to see who thrives and who fails to survive.

Defending Champ Moreno Still Cruising

Level 18 : 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Andrew Moreno
Andrew Moreno

Andrew Moreno won the Wynn Millions $10 million guaranteed no-limit hold'em tournament last summer for over $1.4 million.

The San Diego native is not only still in it again with just 58 players remaining, but he's sitting in front of a solid stack at nearly 750,000.

Could we have a repeat performance? If so, it would go down as one of the greatest accomplishments in poker history.

Schulman Spikes Straight to Survive Set Sweat

Level 17 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Nick Schulman
Nick Schulman

An early position player opened to 20,000 and Nick Schulman shoved for 140,000 in the hijack. Action folded back to the opener who called.

Nick Schulman: {10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Opponent: {9-Spades}{9-Hearts}

Schulman had his opponent pipped, but the {9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop put Schulman well behind his opponent's set. The {7-Diamonds} turn gave him gutshot outs, and the {8-Hearts} spiked the river to complete that draw and keep Schulman's tournament life alive.

Massey Pipped by Soverel

Level 16 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Aaron Massey
Aaron Massey

Sam Soverel opened to 16,000 in early position and Aaron Massey three-bet to 110,000 in the cutoff, leaving himself only a couple of big blinds behind. Action folded back to Soverel who called.

The flop fell {a-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} and both players checked. Soverel led on the {10-Hearts} turn and Massey got his last few chips in with the pay jump confirmed.

Aaron Massey: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Sam Soverel: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Soverel had a slightly better pocket pair and flopped a set to leave Massey drawing dead as the meaningless {7-Spades} completed the board. Soverel added the chips to his stack and Massey made his exit in 98th place, good for $26,005

Moran Flushes Imsirovic as Penultimate Bubble Boy

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Ali Imsirovic
Ali Imsirovic

In the same hand-for-hand rotation, Ali Imsirovic raised from middle position and Daniel Moran defended the big blind to see a {6-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop.

Moran led out for 14,000 and Imsirovic jammed for approximately 225,000. Moran called and the hands were turned up after action was completed at all other tables.

Ali Imsirovic: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Daniel Moran: {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs}

Imsirovic, not far removed from winning a Wynn Millions High Roller, was ahead with aces but Moran had a pair with a flush draw.

The dealer burned and turned the {j-Clubs}, which completed the flush draw and left Imsirovic drawing dead. The meaningless {5-Hearts} was run out on the river and Imsirovic exited empty-handed in 118th place.

The hijack ended up getting his stack of approximately 300,000 in preflop and was at risk versus Johan Guilbert in the cutoff.

Hijack: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Johan Guilbert: {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}

The board ran out {7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}{q-Clubs} as the 2021 GPI Breakout Player and popular French poker vlogger claimed the sizeable pot with his turned set of aces.

Where Are They Now? 2009 WSOP 6th-Place Finisher Steve Begleiter

Level 15 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Steve Begleiter
Steve Begleiter

Thirteen years ago, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event went on just its second-ever November Nine hiatus. When they did, Steve Begleiter sat third in chips behind Darvin Moon and Eric Buchman, but ahead of other players like Jeff Shulman, Phil Ivey, and eventual champ Joe Cada.

Begleiter, who was in action today here on Day 3 of the 2022 Wynn Millions, wound up finishing in sixth place for $1,587,160, which was his first-ever documented tournament cash on the Hendon Mob. Since then, he’s only added two other scores, one in August 2009 and the other in June 2016 when he finished 428th for $3,862 in the WSOP Event #41: $1,500 Monster Stack.

So, whatever happened to the former head of corporate strategy at Bear Stearns and married father of three?

“I’m not a professional. I started maybe in 2007. I played the Main Event in 2008, and between 2008-09 I put a lot of time into the game,” Begleiter recently told PokerNews. “Obviously in 2009, I caught lightning in a bottle. Very little bad stuff had happened to me. I hadn’t had that many two outers, or four hours with no cards. I probably played the Main Event the next five or six years, and I busted myself once or twice, but basically, all those bad things I thought only happened to other people happened to me.”

He continued: “There were no results to show for it. Then life sort of got in the way – aging parents, work, stuff like that. I stopped going for a few years and really just limited my poker to friends in the community that I live in. This year I turn 60 and the present my wife is giving me is I can play as many poker tournaments as I can fit into my schedule.”

Few players had as big a rail as Begleiter did back in 2009. Not only was his wife, Karen, in attendance, and his three children – Joshua, Caroline, and Aaron – waiting in the hall (they weren’t old enough at the time to enter the gaming area), but he also had over a hundred friends and family in the crowd.

“It was one of the thrills of a lifetime,” he recalled fondly. “If you remember, I had won my stake in a local tournament, so I had 20 partners. I had a 100 friends and family out there. It was just a great shared experience and I’m still friends with many of those people today. Looking back, it was a really, really fun time.”

Unfortunately Begleiter's return to poker did not result in another big final table appearance as he was eliminated from the 2022 Wynn Millions before the money.

Berkey Eliminated by Pantaleo

Matt Berkey
Matt Berkey

Giuseppe Pantaleo opened to 10,000 from early position and action folded to Matt Berkey in the big blind who shoved for approximately 120,000. Pantaleo called.

Matt Berkey: {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}
Giuseppe Pantaleo: {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}

The {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop left Berkey in rough shape, and although the {4-Spades} gave some hope with a wheel draw, the {7-Diamonds} completed the board to confirm Berkey's elimination.

"Good game, guys," the Solve for Why founder offered as he made his exit from the tournament area.
