Joao Simao had 12,000 committed to the pot in the hijack and was facing a raise to 26,000 by Daniel Moran in the cutoff. Simao then raised again to 40,000, and Moran called.
The dealer spread the flop, Simao led for 20,500, and Moran conceded the pot.
Prior to this hand, Sylvain Loosli had slipped to just 20,500 or a shade over ten big blinds. Action folded around to the button, who opened to 5,000. Loosli moved all in from the small blind and the big blind player re-jammed with the larger stack. Once the button player folded Loosli was officially at risk.
Sylvain Loosli:
Big Blind Player:
Though all in for his tournament life, Loosli had his opponent dominated and was in a good place to double up. The flop all but sealed the deal, with the big blind player needing running hearts, threes or wheel cards to bust the French poker pro. The turn did provide a sweat with the big blind player picking up a gutshot but the river bricked out to bring Loolsi back up above starting stack.
With roughly 40,000 in the pot on a completed board, Stephen Song was in early position and check-called for his 19,500 remaining chips against John Riordan in the cutoff.
Riordan tabled for the queen-high flush, but it was no good against Song's king-high flush, and Song took the pot for the double-up.
A player in early position opened to 4,000 and was three-bet to 11,500 by the cutoff. Action then folded to Kristen Foxen who, despite the high level of action that preceded her, moved all in. The early position player re-shoved and the cutoff folded to put Foxen at risk.
Kristen Foxen:
Early Position Player:
It was a classic coinflip and one Foxen would need to win to continue play in this flight. The flop kept her in front as did the turn. Foxen managed to fade her opponent's outs on the river and in so doing secure a crucial double up.
With the late registration period closed, the total number of entrants for Day 1a has been confirmed at 300. With a guaranteed prizepool of $3,500,000 those numbers will have to increase a little bit across the two remaining flights to prevent an overlay.
On a board reading Fred Goldberg on the button was involved in a pot with a player in the big blind. The big blind player had moved all in, covering Goldberg who went deep into the tank. After a reasonable amount of time had passed, the clock was called on a Goldberg tortured by the decision at hand.
"You're gonna give me a countdown?" asked Goldberg after he was told he had thirty seconds to act. He was informed that a countdown would begin with ten seconds remaining. Just as the floor had begun the countdown, Goldberg, with a "f*** it I call" slammed his chip stack down into the middle.
The big blind player flipped over for a stone cold bluff while Goldberg revealed he had made a huge and correct call with to take down an enormous pot.
