Day 5 Completed

Exit Day 5; Enter Final Table

Jakob Carlsson leads the final eight
Jakob Carlsson leads the final eight
Day 5 of the PokerStars.it EPT San Remo began with the last 24 players duking it out for a spot at tomorrow's final table.

EPT Snowfest champion Allan Bække came into the day with the chip lead, looking for an unheard-of double dip on possibly the toughest tournament circuit in the world. He managed to run deep into this penultimate day, but his bid for EPT immortality came to an end in 12th place.

Bække shouldn't feel too bad, though. Eight of the top ten players entering Day 5 were eliminated over the course of about 10 hours, including each of the top six. Online qualifiers Thang Duc Nguyen and Paul Berende were among the casualties of this tough day, as were PokerStars players Jens Thorson, Ronny Kaiser, and Ramon Cserei.

That leaves just eight players still in the hunt for the trophy. Here's how they'll be set up heading into tomorrow's final table, each of them looking to get their hands on that €1.25 million first prize:

Seat 1: Claudio Piceci - 4,460,000
Seat 2: Alexey Rybin - 1,890,000
Seat 3: Atanas Gueorguiev - 2,520,000
Seat 4: Jakob Carlsson - 13,525,000
Seat 5: Giuseppe Diep - 1,830,000
Seat 6: Liv Boeree - 3,440,000
Seat 7: Toni Pettersson - 5,035,000
Seat 8: Michael Piper - 4,600,000

We'll be back tomorrow at noon CET (not 2pm as it was today (owing to the TV folks arriving a little late after an epic bus ride)). Be sure to join us right here at PokerNews to see who gets to take home the trophy and the lion's share of the loot.

Claudio Rinaldi Eliminated in 9th Place (€63,500)

Claudio Rinaldi - final table bubble
Claudio Rinaldi - final table bubble
A short raising war between Claudio Rinaldi (small blind) and Jakob Carlsson (big blind) resulted in Rinaldi getting his last 1,785,000 in preflop.

Rinaldi: {A-Hearts} {Q-Clubs}
Carlsson: {4-Spades} {4-Hearts}

Board: {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {10-Spades} {J-Diamonds}

The plucky Swiss will not be coming back tomorrow. When we return at noon, Carlsson will be monstrous chip leader with around 13.5 million - that's over a third of the chips in play.

Random Trivia

Did you know that Liv Boeree and Mike Piper both studied astrophysics at Manchester University at the same time? What are the odds? Slight, we say. Very slight indeed.

Luck of the Devil - Piceci Makes a Set of Sixes to Double Through Boeree

Claudio Piceci
Claudio Piceci
Claudio Piceci min-raised to 200,000 and it folded around to Liv Boeree in the big blind who thought about it for a moment before reraising to 600,000. Piceci flat-called and they saw a flop.

The flop came down {6-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {10-Clubs} and Boeree announced all in to cover the Italian, who called immediately.

Boeree: {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} for two overs
Piceci: {6-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} for the devil's own hand, a set of sixes

Turn: {Q-Hearts} giving Boeree flush and straight outs

River: {10-Diamonds} to make Piceci a full house

Piceci doubled to around 4.6 million. Boeree was left with around 3.5 million.

Power Poker

Claudio Piceci raised to 260,000 to open the pot, and small blind Jakob Carlsson stuck in a three-bet to 645,000 total. Piceci gave it a think before plunking in the call to see a flop.

The dealer spread out {5-Hearts} {Q-Spades} {3-Hearts}, and Carlsson kept the heat on with an all-in shove for Picei's effective stack of just less than two million. After a quick shake of the head, Piceci open-mucked what looked to be two black sevens, and Carlsson drags that pot with no showdown needed.

Can it End Like This?!

While Stelmak was being eliminated from the outer table, one last hand was in play up on the main table, and it became quite possible that Day 5 would end with a massive double knockout to set the final table. Here's what went down:

First in from the button, Alexey Rybin opened with a raise, and big blind Jakob Carlsson three-bet right back at him. Rybin called, and the two men saw an action flop of {K-Clubs} {10-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}. Carlsson fired out a bet of 560,000, and Rybin bumped it right up to 2 million straight. Carlsson then moved all in for more than 4 million, and Rybin instantly called to put the largest pot of the tournament up for grabs! Let's see 'em:

Rybin: {J-Clubs} {9-Clubs}
Carlsson: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}

Now that's what we're talking about. Middle set runs into the flopped straight, leaving Carlsson dead to a board pair to stay afloat.

The turn {8-Hearts} was a blank, but it inherently added another three outs for Carlsson. He was looking for any king, queen, ten, or eight to double up through Rybin, and the river {K-Diamonds} certainly fit that bill.

Finding his dramatic full house on the river, Carlsson has picked up that enormous pot, taking over the chip lead and essentially trading places with Rybin.

We'll have full chip counts for the final nine for you momentarily.

Dmitry Stelmak Eliminated in 10th Place (€63,500)

Stelmak - 10th place
Stelmak - 10th place
Michael "Awesome 'Tache Guy" Piper raised to 210,000 and Dmitry Stelmak pushed all in from the small blind. After a short pause to assess the bet sizes and the like, Piper made the call.

Piper: {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts}
Stelmak: {A-Spades} {5-Clubs}

"Good luck," said Piper. Then, "I don't really mean that."

Board: {8-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts}

Stelmak is out in 10th place, and our final nine will shortly be reconvening on a single table...
