David Coleman is the first winner of the 2025 Poker Masters series, and he did it in the first-ever $1,000,000 Showcase at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas on Monday.
The series-opening champion beat out 239 players in the $5,100 buy-in no-limit hold'em event for a $270,000 prize and a Purple Jacket trophy. Coleman has the inside track on winning the coveted Purple Jacket, awarded to the player who accumulates the most points across 10 tournaments. Jim Collopy is the defending Poker Masters champion.
Coleman Starts Series Off with a Bang
The final table of seven players began with Coleman second in chips, but barely trailing Andrew Ostapchenko. The chip leader flexed his big stack early, pushing players around so much so that he'd soon build a comfortable lead over everyone else.
Jim Agate would take a shot at doubling up to an average stack, but lost a race to Mitchell Halverson and was eliminated in seventh place for $40,000. Ostapchenko, a California poker pro, continued his assault on the final table, increasing his advantage to 2:1 over his nearest competitor after busting PGT satellite winner Doug Lee in sixth place ($49,000) when pocket kings held up against a smaller pair.
Poker Masters $1 Million Showcase Final Table Results
| Place | Player | Prize |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | David Coleman | $270,000 |
| 2 | Mitchell Halverson | $185,000 |
| 3 | Andrew Ostapchenko | $120,000 |
| 4 | Stephen Song | $75,000 |
| 5 | Spencer Champlin | $60,000 |
| 6 | Doug Lee | $49,000 |
| 7 | Jim Agate | $40,000 |
Ostapchenko, however, would begin to fade, doubling up the short stacks twice in the following blind level. Stephen Song, one of the top tournament grinders in the world, would overtake the chip lead upon winning a big pot against the start-of-day chip leader.
But Song, after Spencer Champlin went out in fifth place ($60,000) via Coleman, suffered a tough bad beat with pocket kings to Coleman's A♦8♦ when the flop came out J♦2♦5♦. All the chips were in the pot preflop, and there'd be no runner-runner full house to save Song, who busted in fourth place for $75,000.
Coleman, who eliminated the fourth and fifth-place finishers, had taken over a massive chip lead after mostly sitting back and watching Ostapchenko control the final table. Ostapchenko had fallen to third in chips when three-handed play kicked off. But he'd double with K♦Q♥ against Coleman's A♠3♠ before long, which brought him back into second place, within striking distance of the chip leader.
The good fortune would soon end for Ostapchenko, who was eliminated in third place ($120,000) when he lost a race to Coleman, who had a 3:1 chip advantage over Halverson at the start of heads-up play.
Halverson would chip up a bit, but inevitably lost a race that would have brought him into the chip lead. He was out in second place for $185,000. Coleman, on the other hand, collected $270,000 for first place and now has nearly $11.7 million in live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob.
Halverson didn't win the title, but he entered Event #2: $5,100 No-Limit Hold'em and reached the final table out of 130 entrants. He's guaranteed another $26,000, at minimum. But if he can spin up his small stack on Tuesday, he'll win $157,000 and become the heavy favorite to win the Purple Jacket.
PokerGO's livestream will begin at 1 p.m. PT. Event #3: $10,100 No-Limit Hold'em will also kick off inside the PokerGO Studio on Tuesday.
