The World Poker Tour Heads to The Star Sydney From September 18
Table Of Contents
The Star Sydney casino will be packed to the rafters from September 18 until October 1 as it welcomes the World Poker Tour (WPT) back to Australia. The past four editions of WPT Australia have taken place at the venue's sister casino on the world-famous Gold Coast, with this bustling festival marking the WPT's first time in Sydney since the WPTDeepStacks series in March 2022.
All monetary amounts are Australian dollars unless specified
WPT Australian kicks off with a $1,500 Australian Poker Cup on September 18, wrapping up on September 21. A similar tournament started the WPT Australia festival on the Gold Coast 12 months ago. That $1,500 Opening Event drew in 408 entrants, with Mishel Anunu coming out on top and claiming a $109,754 top prize.
Expanding the table below enables you to see the huge schedule of WPT Australia events. There are dozens of satellites and side events for you to sink your teeth into, with buy-ins ranging from $150 to a wallet-emptying $20,000.
WPT Australia Schedule
$20,000 Buy-in Super High Roller Scheduled
The massive $20,000 buy-in is reserved for the two-day $20,000 Super High Roller, which runs September 24-25. Corey Kempson and Hamish Crawshaw chopped the equivalent event last year, chopping when heads-up and taking home $354,541 after besting a 77-stroing field.
Those with deep pockets or who fancy their chances in satellites should look for the $10,000 WPT World Championship Warm-Up toward the back end of the festival. Day 1 starts on September 29, before crowning its champion on October 1. Kareem Kilany outlasted 87 opponents in this event at the Star Gold Coast in September 2024 and took home $228,641 for his efforts.
Huge Field Expected for the $5,500 Championship Event
Of course, the crown jewel of WPT Australia is, without doubt, the Main Event. Costing $5,500 to enter, the first of three Championship Event flights shuffles up and deals on September 25. Players then battle across five days before a champion emerges on October 1.
The Gold Coast edition of the WPT Australia Main Event cost $8,000 to enter, yet still attracted 396 players who created a $2,930,400 prize pool. Aussie superstar James Obst triumphed on that occasion, turning his $8,000 into $585,359. Expect a larger crowd this time around due to the more affordable $5,500 buy-in and the fact that The Star Sydney is running a plethora of cut-price satellites throughout the WPT Australia festivities.
Championship Event players can purchase unlimited re-entries until the start of Level 11 on each Day 1, and are permitted to play in as many Day 1s as they wish. However, there is no "best stack forward" in this event; should you bag up chips at the conclusion of a Championship Event flight, you cannot enter any subsequent Day 1s.
