SunBet Poker Tour GrandWest Returns with R10 Million GTD
Table Of Contents
The SunBet Poker Tour returns to the iconic GrandWest Casino in Cape Town from November 19–30, with a value-packed 16-event schedule and R10 million (≈$560,000) guaranteed across the series.
The two-week poker festival promises the biggest poker action in South Africa to close out the year, highlighted by the R15,000 Monster Stack Main Event, which boasts a R4 million (≈$225,000) guaranteed prize pool.
Spotlight Event: R4 Million MonsterStack Main Event
The centrepiece of the GrandWest stop is the R15,000 buy-in MonsterStack Main Event, giving players a 100,000 starting stack and a deep, player-friendly structure that offers plenty of room to manoeuvre and showcase their skills.
Players can choose from three starting flights:
- Day 1A (Thu, Nov 27 at 12 p.m.)
- Day 1B (Fri, Nov 28 at 11 a.m.)
- Day 1C (Fri, Nov 28 at 7 p.m.)
Day 1A and 1B offer 60-minute levels, with 40 minutes for 1C. Unlimited re-entry is permitted through 13 levels and late registration extends into Day 2 until 4:30 p.m. A champion will be crowned on November 30, and poker fans can follow along as the PokerNews live reporting will be covering the Main Event.
Last year’s edition was one for the history books, with Mauritius-based Saurabh Gulati topping a 504-entry field to claim the 2024 GrandWest Main Event title and the lion’s share of a R6,350,400 ($351,395) prize pool after a three-way deal.
Gulati’s triumph was made even more memorable by a record-breaking final table featuring two female players — Ronit Chamani and Diane Walker — who both made history by reaching the last three.
“It was pressure in the start, but after that it got easier with the chip lead and everything. I had a ball time,” Gulati said after the win.
The Hendon Mob Championship Cape Town Million Returns
Also returning to GrandWest is The Hendon Mob Championship (THMC) Cape Town Million, one of the most popular mid-tier events in the region. With an R8,000 buy-in, a 30,000 starting stack, and a R1.25 million guarantee, the event offers outstanding value for players looking to pick up a South African flag for their The Hendon Mob profiles.
Three Day 1 flights (Nov 23–24) lead into Day 2 on Tuesday, Nov 25, with 30-minute levels and a big blind ante format. One in eight entries will make the money, and unlimited re-entry is available through the first 11 levels.
The 2024 THMC smashed its initial guarantee, drawing 299 entries and creating a R2,009,280 ($111,000) prize pool. Cape Town’s own Muaaz Gani emerged victorious after a heads-up deal with Sugen Singh, keeping the trophy on home soil.
“Today was actually a day where I really wanted to have that trophy,” Gani said after the win, proudly holding The Hendon Mob Championship title.
With THMC now firmly part of the SPT schedule, expectations are high for the 2025 instalment.
More Blockbuster Poker Events
Beyond the headline events, the GrandWest stop caters to all bankrolls and formats:
- R75,000 Super High Roller (R1M GTD)
- R25,000 Mega Million (R1.5M GTD)
- R10,000 Battle of the Ages (R250K GTD)
- R2,500 Cape Town Ladies Championship
- R50,000 High Roller (R1.5M GTD)
High rollers can get their fix in both the R50K and R75K events, each backed by seven-figure guarantees. The Mega Million, meanwhile, provides one of the best value mid-stakes tournaments of the series, featuring a R25,000 buy-in, R1.5 million guarantee, and three days of action from November 20–22.
Then there’s the R250K GTD Battle of the Ages. Debuting under the same name at the 2025 WSOP, the event splits Day 1 flights by age group before merging fields for Day 2. Finally, the Cape Town Ladies Championship returns on Saturday, Nov 22, with a R2,500 buy-in and a dedicated spotlight for South Africa’s growing community of women in poker.
