Has Triton Just Solved a Huge Poker Problem? DNegs & Hellmuth Think So

The Triton Poker Series has built a reputation for pushing innovation in poker, and during the Triton ONE series in Jeju, a new timing system called Triton Tempo was introduced. The format offers a different approach to how time is handled at the table, with the potential to improve the overall pace of play while still allowing players to think through big decisions. Early reactions from players like Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth have already labeled it a possible “game changer,” adding even more attention to the new format.
How Triton Tempo Works
Triton Tempo builds on the traditional shot clock but changes how extra time is used. Players are still given a set amount of time to act on each decision, similar to a normal shot clock. However, once that time runs out, instead of using a time extension, typically 30-seconds, any additional time is taken directly from a personal time bank.
Players who register early may receive extra time added to their clock, and more time can be awarded deeper into the event. This helps ensure players still have enough time available in later stages while keeping the pace consistent.
"Game Changer”
Early reactions from players have already brought attention to the system. Daniel Negreanu described Triton Tempo as “an innovative game changer for poker,” adding that while shot clocks help, a system like this is “a much more fair and equitable” way to manage time.
Phil Hellmuth also supported the change, explaining that while he plays quickly most of the time, there are moments where he needs several minutes to fully evaluate a situation. He noted that previous systems allowed some players to consistently waste time, calling it frustrating and unfair, and said the new format “seems fair.”
