The poker world received sad news over the weekend regarding the passing of Charles “Doc” Hanson, 72, a beloved poker player from the Midwest and on both the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) and Major Series of Poker: The Tour (MSPT).

Hanson passed shortly after receiving a sudden diagnosis of stage four lung cancer, according to a GoFundMe by his niece.

“Chuck, my uncle, has always been a source of kindness and support for those around him,” she said. “Chuck has been a caring and selfless person his entire life, always putting others before himself.”

Hanson, who hailed from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, had $178,35 in lifetime tournament earnings dating back to 2010, according to The Hendon Mob, which included a career-high $40,433 for finishing 176th in the 2015 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event.

However, perhaps his biggest poker accomplishment came just two years ago when he took down the RGPS Council Bluffs $400 Black Chip Bounty Ring Event for $10,724.

Hanson, who previously served in the military, described himself as a poker player, investor, writer, and car lover. Before retiring, he enjoyed a successful career as a sales executive with Coca-Cola.

His obituary elaborated:

“Doc was known for his sharp wit, strong character, and warm presence that touched the lives of many … Outside of his career, Doc was an accomplished and passionate poker player. He loved the strategy, competition, and camaraderie of the game, and he was known for his skill at the table. Poker was more than a hobby—it was a reflection of his intelligence, patience, and fearless approach to life.”

His passing was remembered by those who knew him on the circuit, including poker dealer Paul McWithey.

“Rest in peace my friend... I’m glad I had the chance to come visit you in March during the MSPT and be able to deal to you one last time,” McWithey wrote on social media. “I know you will crush it in heaven and one day I will deal to you again.”

According to his obituary, Doc is survived by his brother, Mark Hanson, his sister Terri Clark (Steve) and his sister, Cheré Kirchner. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, as well as many friends and loved ones who will deeply miss him.

His obituary added: “He will be remembered for a life well lived—one marked by service, professional success, enduring friendships, and a passion for the things he loved. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

PokerNews offers its condolences to the friends and family of Charles “Doc” Hanson.
