Is Haarala Happy?

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Casino Barcelona during the daytime
Casino Barcelona during the daytime

Jeroen Aarts open the action from first position to 800 and was called in the next seat by Ange Besnainou and in the big blind by Jani Haarala. The flop of {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs} saw Aarts continue for 1,500, and Besnainou again made the call. But Jani Haarala made it 6,000 and eventually he got two folds.

"Happy?" Aarts asked his table neighbour.

Jan Haarala simply shrugged and piled up some valuable additional chips, although Jeroen Aarts maintains a strong lead over the rest of his table.

Martinez Making the Most of Day 1a

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

So far, with Day 1a approaching its halfway stage, Javier Martinez has made the most early running, and in a very quiet manner. We've hardly seen him involved in many big showdowns, but the Spanish player is the nearest to cracking the six-figure stack mid-way through Level 5.

A reminder that the hour-long dinner break takes place after Level 6, with play expected to conclude in the room at around 3.30am local time.

Pinto Keeps the Chips

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Raul Pinto called Patrick Lebahr's bet of 2,325 on a flop of {5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} to bump a pot from worth winning to chunky. On the turn of {7-Diamonds}, Lebahr was at it again, making it 6,425 and getting another call. The river of {J-Hearts} saw Lebahr move all-in and he got an instant call.

Lebahr turned over {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs} but he was crushed by Pinto's pocket kings of {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}. While Lebahr drops below starting stack, Pinto rockets up to a top ten stack after 96 entries so far have left us with 91 players still in their seats.

Comeback Trail

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante

Two players have bounced back from earlier setbacks to play themselves right back into contention for a Day 2 spot without re-entering.

Simen Gulbrandsen had lost a couple of pots to drop himself to around half his starting stack, but a bet of 3,200 into a pot of around double that on a board of {7-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{5-Spades}{2-Hearts} saw him get a fold and bolster his stack to 21,000.

Elsewhere, Paul Testud suffered a series of unfortunate hand events, but his full house with {2-Diamonds}{2-Spades} on a board of {3-Spades}{J-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} saw him double back up to 22,000 rather neatly.

Kellner Takes From Stephens Before the Break

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante

We caught up with Kelly Kellner as he celebrated his latest pot at what has been a great table for him in the first three levels.

"I'm up to 77,625 after winning 20k from Sally [Stephens]. I had {J-Spades}{2-Spades} and on the flop of KdJd4c] we both checked a raised pot pre-flop. The turn came a deuce and I bet 10,500 and she called with what I was pretty sure was a flush draw. The river was a brick and I bet another 10k and she folded."

Kellner may have taken the lead in the room with that pot, but with 85 entries and unlimited re-entries until the first hand of Day 2, players have every chance to overtake him well before the end of Day 1a. Kellner held the chip lead in the High Roller at the end of Level 6 yesterday and did not make Day 2.

Salamoun and Stephens

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante

Marwan Salamoun got off to a decent start in this 888Live Main Event here in Barcelona, but he took a dip later in Level and by the time the latest hand played out, he was in need of a boost.

Betting 2,500 on a flop of {2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, he got a call from the player in the next seat, Sally Stephens. The turn of {7-Spades} saw Salamoun bet 5,500 and Stephens folded. While the two of them got into a discussion about the hand, Stephens now sits behind an above-average stack of 46,000. Salamoun, meanwhile, now sits behind the same amount as the starting stack of 30,000.
