Demetriou Baffled

Harry Demetriou
Harry Demetriou
If one were to pick an adjective to describe Harry Demetriou's current state of mind, any of perplexed, baffled, bewildered or confused would probably suffice. In a limped three-handed pot, Demetriou bet 100 on a flop of {2-Spades} {3-Spades} {3-Clubs} after action checked to him on the button. He was called by the big blind. When the turn fell {Q-Diamonds}, that same player bet 500 into Demetriou.

"Five?" asked a surprised Demetriou. "You check, I was going to bet!" He folded his hand.

The very next hand, Demetriou opened the pot for 300 from the cutoff. Action folded to the big blind, who shoved all in for 7,500. Demetriou threw his arms into the air in exasperation, chuckled and then folded.

His stack is currently at about 11,000.

Dark Check Costs Levy

The flop showed {10-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} in a three-way pot contested among Grant Levy and two opponents. Action checked to the late position player, who bet 400. Levy, from the big blind, and the other player both called.

Levy checked dark before the turn came {5-Hearts}. Each other player checked as well. On the river {4-Hearts}, Levy bet 400 and was called by one opponent. Levy tabled {J-Hearts} {3-Hearts} for a turned flush, but his opponent rivered a flush of her own with {Q-Hearts} {J-Spades} to win the pot.

Levy's down to 8,000.

Yoyo Gone

Yoyo Gone
Yoyo Gone
The yoyo only seemed to go one direction for Jonny Vincent today as he was recently eliminated from today's event.

Vincent and two opponents saw a {Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{7-?} flop where Vincent's {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} was drawing against his opponent's {A-?}{Q-?} and {7-?}{8-?}. The turn and river bricked out and Vincent made a hurried escape for the exit.

Volatility?

There has been a rash of called all in bets during the first hour and fifteen minutes of play. Correspondingly, the volatility has been somewhat higher than usually seen in a large buy-in tournament.

Guo Liang Xu has benefited from some of that volatility. He knocked out one player on a board of {9-Clubs} {3-Spades}{4-Spades} {6-Clubs} {A-Clubs} by making a set of sixes with {6-Spades} {6-Hearts}, then knocked out another player with a king-high flush when that player made a queen-high flush. As a result of those two hands, Xu's stack is currently about 40,000, making him the early chip leader.

Barry Greenstein Eliminated

Barry Busto
Barry Busto
Barry Greenstein was one of the big name international players at this event, but he has become one of the first casualties after being recently eliminated.

Greenstein had raised from under the gun to 300 and found himself two callers. The flop came down {7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and Greenstein checked to a middle position player who bet out 1,000. Jakub Dylewski then popped it up to 3,000 on the button and the action was back on Greenstein. He put in another raise, moving all in for his last 5,775 in chips. The middle position player folded but Dylewski made the call.

Greenstein: {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}
Dylewski: {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}

Greenstein held a set but Dylewski had outs to a straight or bigger set. The turn was the {A-Clubs} but the river was a dagger through the heart of Greenstein as the {5-Hearts} gave Dylewski the pot and a signed copy of Greenstein's book "Ace On The River".

Honeybone Recovering

James Honeybone started off the tournament on a downswing, but recently recovered some of his chips. On a flop of {7-Diamonds} {6-Diamonds} {6-Clubs} Honeybone bet 1,700 after his lone opponent checked. They both went to the turn {4-Hearts}, where Honeybone pushed all in for 8,000 after his opponent checked. That was enough to win the pot and build his stack up to 14,000.

Assadourian Plays the Fools

After one opponent limped into the pot, Eric Assadourian raised it up. He was called in two spots before the original limper jammed all in. Assadourian, who had lost a few pots in the early going to slip down to about 6,000 chips, called all in, folding the other two players. His pocket jacks were one pip better than his opponent's pocket tens. The dealer pushed the pot to Assadourian after neither player connected with the board.

Assadourian now has about 13,300 chips.

Timex Takes One From Lieu

Liz Lieu
Liz Lieu
Liz Lieu raised it up to 150 from middle position and found three callers including Mike "Timex" McDonald in the big blind.

The flop came down {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and Lieu led for 500. McDonald was the lone caller.

The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and McDonald checked to Lieu who fired again for 1,100. McDonald then check-raised to 3,200. Lieu thought for a long time before making the call.

The river brought the {7-Diamonds} and both players checked it down. McDonald turned over {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} which was good enough to take it down and jump to 17,600. Lieu is back to 8,200.

Bobinas Outdraws Cowboys

Marius Bobinas is the latest player to double up. He flopped top pair, top kicker holding {A-Clubs} {K-Spades} on a flop of {A-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {2-Clubs} and got all in against an opponent holding {K-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. The board ran out {4-Clubs} {A-Spades} to bring Bobinas up to about 20,000 in chips. He did not eliminate his opponent on the hand.
