APPT Macau Main Event

Day 1b Completed

Day 1b Concludes

That wraps up play from Day 1b of the 2008 PokerStars.net APPT Macau Main Event. Today we saw 184 players get a taste of poker in Asia with 77 players surviving the day.

It was a day for the pros with many big name players making it through to see Day 2 action. Alexander Jung, Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier, Johnny Chan, Chris Grigorian, Mansour Matloubi, Thomas Bihl and Dan Schreiber all had a good day at the office and will enjoy a day off tomorrow before returning to the action on Thursday. Chad Brown also made it through it the day but will not be joined by Vanessa Rousso who was a late casualty on one of the final hands of the evening.

They will all be chasing David Steicke, who will be our likely chip leader from flight 1b, after his combination of gutshot straight draws and flopped sets saw him accumulate the most chips today. Steicke finished in 3rd place in the 2007 APPT High Rollers Event in Macau last year and will be looking to emulate that performance here.

We'll have the updated chip counts of the remaining players as soon as they are bagged and tagged.

We'll be back to do it all over again tomorrow with Day 1c of this event. We believe that this will be the largest day of any of the opening flights, with the total number of entrants expected to be well clear of the 500 mark. The action will recommence at 1:30 p.m. local time and we look forward to your company then!

Lindstrom Tames The Beast

Kinkade Gone
Kinkade Gone
Michael Lindstrom opened with a raise of 1,800 from the cutoff before Jay "Seabeast" Kinkade moved all in from the button for an additional 8,375. The blinds folded and Lindstrom made the call.

Lindstrom: {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}
Kinkade: {A-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

The board fell {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} with Lindstrom's pair holding up and sending Australia's #1 online ranked player to the rail just short of a Day 2 berth.

It's That Time Again

With fifteen minutes remaining on the tournament clock, dealers have been instructed by floor supervisors to deal exactly five more hands at each table. Upon the completion of those five hands, the day will be over.

ElkY Chips Back Up

There have been some big swings for Bernard "ElkY" Grospellier in the last few minutes. After triple-barrel bluffing and getting called a few minutes ago, he went back on the offensive with a raise to 1,500 from early position. Only Martin Comer called.

On the {J-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {6-Hearts} flop, Comer pushed all in. Grospellier called and tabled {J-Spades} {5-Spades} for top pair. He was ahead of Comer's {7-Hearts} {8-Diamonds} and stayed that way on the {9-Diamonds} turn and the {Q-Diamonds} river. Grospellier now has about 20,000 in chips, while Comer has traded places with him and dropped to about 10,000.

ElkY Triple Barrels

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
On a flop of {J-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{K-Spades}, the big blind checked to Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier who fired out 1,800. The big blind made the call.

The turn was the {7-Diamonds} and again it was checked to Grospellier who fired out 4,200. Once again his opponent called.

The river brought the {4-Hearts}, the action checked to Grospellier, who released another barrel worth 7,700 and the player in the big blind called a third time.

Grospellier showed {7-?}{3-?} for a meagre pair of sevens against his opponent's {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for top pair. ElkY's triple barrel sees him slide back down to 9,000.

Saab Unstuck

Steicke Leads The Pack
Steicke Leads The Pack
On a board of {J-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{J-Diamonds}, David Saab and David Steicke committed their chips into the middle. Saab held {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs} for trip jacks but would still need some help as Steicke showed {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} for a flopped set that turned a full house!

The river bricked the {5-Clubs} and the 2008 APT Manila Champion headed to the rail. Steicke extended his tournament chip lead to 67,000 chips.

Everybody's a Comedian Today

Chris Grigorian
Chris Grigorian
Chris Grigorian opened the pot with a raise from middle position to 1,675. When all the remaining players folded, Grigorian nodded and said, "Good choice!" He opened {A-Spades} {A-Clubs}. "Armenian Airlines. I do not want a crash landing right now!"

He currently has 23,000 in chips.

Jung Can't Duck the Ace

When we walked up to Alexander Jung's table, he was in the process of tabling {10-Clubs} {10-Hearts} against an all-in opponent, who opened {A-Spades} {3-Clubs}. The board showed {4-Spades} {5-Clubs} {9-Clubs}. Jung was well in the lead, but the tables were turned when the dealer burned and turned the {A-Hearts} on the turn, drawing a groan from everyone at the table. He couldn't complete the re-suckout when the river missed him, {J-Diamonds}.

"How can you call the flop?" one of the other players at the table asked Jung's opponent.

"That's true," said another. "How can you call?"

For his part, Jung took the beat stoically, shipping a total of about 6,000 chips to his opponent on the hand. He still retains 19,000.
