Welcome back to the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia for the 2012 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Melbourne Main Event. This is it! The big dance, the one all the players have been waiting for. It’s the largest buy-in APPT event ($5,000), it has the most prestige on the tour and in just a few days, an APPT Melbourne champion will be crowned!
This year’s event marks only the second time the APPT has descended upon the Crown Casino, but there is already a rich history that goes with the event. In 2011, Australian Poker Hall of Fame member Leo Boxell defeated a star-studded field of 260 players, taking home the title and a whopping $330,000 to go along with it. That win for Boxell was arguably the highlight of the whole year in Australian poker and we are sure this year’s APPT Melbourne Main Event will be just as exciting.
The first of two Day 1 flights is set to begin in just a short while at 6:10 PM local time and a large field of familiar faces, Crown regulars and Team PokerStars Pros are expected to be at the tables. The plan for today is to play seven 60-minute levels. All the players start with 30,000 in chips and the first blind level is 50-100. Tonight marks the first of two Day 1 flights, with the surviving players from Day 1a returning on Saturday for Day 2 action. Let's do this!

There are currently just under 100 players registered for tonight's Day 1 flight. The early word is that last year's field of 260 players will easily be surpassed, with plenty of time left for players to register tonight and another Day 1 flight to take place tomorrow at midday.

Table of Death Emerges
Every day of every tournament will have it's own table of death. Today we've already spotted a murderers row of poker talent over on Table 49.
The worst position at this table is for Jackie Glazier. The Melbourne resident is coming off an amazing World Series of Poker where she finished second in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em event. This marked Glazier's biggest cash to date as she pocketed $458,996.
One seat over we found Brendon Rubie, who also just missed out on a WSOP bracelet this summer. Rubie finished second in the $2,500 Four-Max event, and cashed $242,458. At the start of 2012 Rubie also won a $1,000 Aussie Millions event for a cool A$200,000.
The third notable at this table is Tom Grigg. Grigg has direct position on both Rubie and Glazier, but nevertheless he probably hoped for an easier table draw. Grigg's biggest live result came in December 2009 when he finished fifth in the APPT Sydney Main Event. Playing under the handle 'tollgate' he won over $2,000,000 online, making him one of the most successful Australian online players.
These three players are without a doubt some of the most successful Australian players in today's event.

Another Few Names
A few more notable players have taken their seats here in the APPT Melbourne Main Event. Included in these players is the young Anthony Aston, who has made two ANZPT final tables this year, collecting more than $100,000.
Also taking their seat is Benn Skender, perhaps better known by his online screen name "risk2Dupside". Another of these players is Kristian Lunardi, who has more than $250,000 in live tournament winnings, and he is seated on the "table of death" that we recently reported on.
The fourth player we recognized was Wayne Bentley. Bentley finished 16th in the 2010 PCA Main Event where he cashes $100,000.
