Day 1c Completed

Matenga Dominates Third and Final Day 1 Flight

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Chip leader, Terangi Matenga
Chip leader, Terangi Matenga

That’s it. No more chances to secure a spot in Day 2 of APPT Auckland as the third and final Day 1 flight has come to a close at the SKYCITY Casino.

There were 79 total entrants on Day 1c, which, when added with the first two Day 1 flights, meant the final field weighed in at 225. That’s 12 larger than last year’s ANZPT Auckland, and it’s the top 24 who will make the money, while the eventual champion will pocket a very nice NZ$132,000.

You can find full prize pool information by clicking here.

As with the last few days, there were plenty of recognizable faces at the felt on Day 1c. Some of those include New Zealand locals Jack Efaraimo and Koray Turker, Australians Luke Brabin, Bruno Portaro, Jesse “On the Mac” McKenzie, ANZPT Melbourne winner Edison “GooGieMonA” Nguyen, Sal Fazzino, Patrick Healy, and 2011 Aussie Millions winner David Gorr. Most of the aforementioned players were eliminated throughout the day, except for McKenzie and Brabin, who both made it through to Day 2. They will be joined by players like Luke Spano, Joachim Chia, and Thomas Ward who also made it through from Day 1c.

The chip leader to end Day 1c was Terangi Matenga with 170,400 in chips. He trails Day 1b chip leader Mehrdad Razmi and Day 1a leader Ben Rendall heading into Day 2. You can find complete end-of-day counts in the live reporting blog below, along with a full Day 2 table and seat draw.

There were 29 survivors on Day 1c, which means 80 total will now return for Day 2. The plan is to kick off at 12:15 p.m. local time tomorrow and play into the money and as close to the final table in 10 levels as possible. Be sure to join us then!

While you wait for tomorrow's action, check out the video below with our very own Sarah Grant. She heads to Auckland's Sky Tower to reveal a series of facts that will have you scratching your head.

Nguyen Eliminated, Matenga Chip Leader

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

In the space of a few hands, Terangi Matenga has cemented the chip lead, while Edison Nguyen was eliminated.

It all started when Marc Wittkopf opened from the cut off. Matenga called from the button as did Nguyen from the blinds.

The flop came down {3-Spades}{j-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and Nguyen led out for 3,200. Both his opponents called before the {k-Spades} dropped on the turn.

Nguyen checked. Wittkopf then bet out 5,000 before Matenga came over the top with a raise to 13,500. Nguyen folded his hand as Wittkopf went into the tank. A few minutes passed before Wittkopf opted to fold, open mucking {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}.

A few hands later and Matenga and Nguyen exchanged raises pre flop until Nguyen was all in for around 25,000.

Matenga had pocket jacks and was up against {a-}{q-}. The board ran out {10-}{k-}{3-}{k-}{7-} and Nguyen was unable to improve and was eliminated minutes before the end of play.

Matenga raked in the pot as he moved up to 170,000 in chips.

Five Hands Left

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

The tournament clock has been paused and there will now be five more hands before the night is all over. Stay tuned to find out who makes it through, who's the chip leader, a recap of the day's action, all the end-of-day chip counts and a full Day 2 seating draw!

Ward Nearing Six Figures

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Thomas Ward is moving towards the chip lead.

A recent hand that went to Ward began when the player on the button raised it up to 3,000. Ward then three-bet to 7,500 from the big blind. A call would see the dealer flip over a {4-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{5-Clubs} flop. Ward led for 7,000 here and a call would see a {q-Spades} hit the turn. This time Ward check-called a bet of 11,500 and the board would complete with a {5-Diamonds}.

When both players checked, Ward revealed {q-Hearts}{9-Spades}, which trumped {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

Ward is nearing six figures.

Spano Staying Alive

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Luke Spano was starting to get short stacked but recently scooped up a pot with {2-Spades}{2-Clubs} on a {2-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{a-Spades}{3-Spades} against an opponent with a pair of aces.

Spano is currently in contention for the ANZ Player of the Year and will need a big result here to surpass the current leader in Edison Nguyen. Interestingly, Nguyen is also still alive during the last level of the day.

Wittkopf Takes Out The Champ

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

We arrived at the table with the board showing {a-Spades}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. David Gorr was all in for just over 15,000 and had been called by Marc Wittkopf.

Wittkopf: {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Gorr: {a-Clubs}{3-Spades}

Unfortunately for the 2011 Aussie Million main event champion, he had run is top pair into a set. The board ran out the {q-Hearts} and {5-Diamonds} to see Wittkopf hold and take down the pot.
