Roberts v. Mercier

Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Not content with his victory here in the $100,000 Challenge last night, Dan Smith is apparently auditioning for a job at PokerNews. We just bumped into him in the middle of the floor, and he motioned us back over to his table. "You're gonna wanna check out this hand," he said giddily. "Mercier flatted a six-bet."

When we walked up to the table, we found Brian Roberts and Jason Mercier mixed up in a big pot. Smith told us that Roberts (under the gun) had six-bet to 13,075 and the five-betting Mercier (UTG+1) had flatted to see the flop. It was showing {A-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds}, and Roberts continued out with a tiny bet of 3,650. Mercier flatted again, and Roberts put another chippy bet of 7,350 in after the {Q-Spades} turn. Another call came, and the {4-Spades} filled out the board.

Roberts leaned forward to eyeball Mercier's remaining stack of about 24,000 before plunking out a big stack of covering chips. Mercier needed a long while to think it over, and he was shifty and uncomfortable in his chair as he tried to sort out what was going on. It was maybe five minutes before he finally took a few more looks back at the cards and slipped them into the muck.

The table they're playing is just underneath an elevated bar area, and there was a good crowd of spectators watching that tricky hand play out. "The fans want to see it," one of them yelled after Mercier folded. Roberts smirked widely, and it looked for a minute like he might oblige. He held his cards for about 15 seconds as the dealer pushed him the pot, but he eventually slapped them down on the felt face-down to leave us all wondering.

And Dan, you're hired.

Mercier's Opponent Checks Back with Straight

Jason Mercier opened to 800 from the cutoff seat and the player on the button made the call. Everyone else folded and the flop came down {8-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades}. Mercier fired 775 and his opponent called.

The turn card was the {2-Clubs} and both players checked. They also checked when the {6-Diamonds} landed on the river.

Mercier tabled the {K-Spades}{6-Spades} first for a pair of sixes. His opponent held the {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a straight that he had checked behind on the river and won the pot.

I Can't Get Wid That

Over by the bar located next to the Crown Casino poker room is a very stacked table that includes Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and James Obst. This hand we'll tell you about involves Ivey and Obst.

On the paired {J-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} board, Obst bet 7,500 into a pot of around 25,000 and Ivey made the call to see the {Q-Spades} land on the river. Obst took some time and then stacked up all of his chips and slid them into the middle. Ivey requested a count. The shove was for roughly 15,000, but once the dealer had gotten up to 14,000, Ivey's hand was tossed into the muck and Obst pushed the pot.

Lechich Wins Cooler Against Baron

Tino Lechich just won a pretty big pot to move close to 70,000 in chips, knock out one player and knock Isaac Baron back under the starting stack.

With the final board of {K-Hearts}{Q-Spades}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}{3-Hearts} and one player already all in, Baron bet enough to put Lechich all in. Lechich snapped with the {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades} for the nut full house. Baron held the {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for a worse full house and the all-in player held the {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}.

Lechich raked in the chips while the eliminated player headed to the rail.

Enter Steicke

David Steicke is now in the building, opting for a late registration, and has showed that he's willing to get involved in things right away.

Action folded to the player in the cutoff seat and he raised to 1,050. Steicke reraised to 2,250 and then play folded back around to the original raiser. He four-bet to 4,700 and Steicke gave it up.

Sowers Finds a Double

Mike Sowers
Mike Sowers

Mike Sowers got his last 7,350 chips into the middle with {9-Clubs} {9-Spades}, and he seemed content to flop for double or nothing against an opponent's {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}.

The board ran out {6-Diamonds} {8-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {2-Hearts}, and Sowers' pair held strong to snag the double.

After a player raised to 850, Josh Barrett three-bet to 2,450. The original raiser called and the flop came down {J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs}. The first player checked and Barrett bet 2,500. His opponent folded and Barrett won the pot to move back towards the starting stack amount.

Hachem's House Is Better

With the final board reading {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, a player fired 1,000 into 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Joe Hachem. Hachem raised to 2,100 and his opponent made the call, claiming to be priced in.

The player showed the {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and Hachem the {A-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. Hachem's full house was best and he won the pot to get back to 23,000 in chips.

Break it Up

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

It's time for another 15-minute break. Most of the players are spending it right on the rail watching "the tennis" on the big screen.
