Speidel Speeding Over Six Figures

Oliver Speidel has already made two final tables at the 2012 Aussie Millions, first in the $1,100 Shootout event and then in the $1,650 bounty event. Speidel will be looking to continue that great form here in the Main Event and so far he has made a good start.

A recent hand saw Speidel open the action to 2,600 from the under the gun. No player on the table wanted to rumble except for the big blind who flicked in the call.

The big blind player checked in the dark as the {k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} flop was dealt. Speidel then continued his betting, throwing out 3,100. A {K-Spades} hit the turn and this time Speidel's opponent led for 2,500. Speidel smelt something fishy and raised it up to 9,000. His opponent thought for only a moment before sending his cards into the muck and giving the pot to Speidel.

Steicke Doubles in Battle-of-the-Blinds

David Steicke in the midst of a double
David Steicke in the midst of a double

David Steicke is up around 100,000 chips after two big hands matched up in the blinds. The action folded to Steicke in the small blind and he raised to 3,200 and then moved all in when Busra Kaluntakasuwun three-bet from the big blind. She took her time and then called the 48,300 bet.

Kaluntakasuwun: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Steicke: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

The board ran a swingy {7-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{a-Hearts}{5-Hearts} to make Steicke a flush.

Kurganov Almost All In

Igor Kurganov raised to 19,500 preflop, leaving a single purple T500 chips behind, and Maria Ho made the call. Both players then exposed their cards, and per Crown rules, Kurganov wasn't allowed to put in his other 500 chips.

Showdown

Ho{A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}
Kurganov{7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}

It was a flip, and while the {2-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop didn't hit Ho directly, it gave her some added outs to a straight. Lucky for Kurganov, the {3-Spades} turn and {8-Spades} river missed Ho and he nearly doubled.

Welcome To Tom Grigg's World!

Tom Grigg
Tom Grigg

All right. So Tom Grigg got moved from his initial table with Taylor von Kriegenbergh and JC Tran. You would think chances of things getting better is pretty big, but he drew the short straw. Grigg got owned pretty bad by the seating cards as he ending up getting the seat directly to the right of Jason Mercier and Tom Dwan.

So Grigg's day was looking to be full of playing tight and waiting for good spots, but things couldn't have been more different. The craziness started when a player raised pre flop and both blinds defended, Grigg was in the big blind. The flop came down {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} and both blinds checked to the initial raiser, he bet 4,200 and Grigg called. On the turn the {5-Spades} popped up and Grigg checked once more. His opponent grabbed for chips once again and threw out 7,800. Grigg was in a raising mood and made it 21,600 after which his opponent called.

The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and Grigg counted out a hefty 36,700 bet with around 65,000 left behind. His opponent tanked for ages but finally ended up calling. Grigg tabled with {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for quads and his opponent shrugged as he mucked his cards. "He told me afterwards he had aces, it's impossible to fold that there", Grigg said with some honest sympathy.

The Grigg train kept rolling as his opponent from the previous hand raised it to 6,700. The move may have seemed a bit tilty, and Grigg decided to play back at him once more. From the small blind he three-bet to 16,600 and his opponent shoved all-in. Grigg didn't notice this at first and thought he heard 'fold'. After a little confusion both players tabled their hands and we witnessed the following showdown.

Tom Grigg{K-Spades}{9-Hearts}
Opponent{A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

The flop brought out {K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{J-Diamonds} and Grigg seemed to feel sorry for his opponent right away. The turn ({5-Clubs}) and river ({Q-Diamonds}) didn't change the outcome, and Grigg send a very disappointed player to the rail.

After the small blind you get the button, and Grigg made use of that right away. Attacking two of the most difficult big blinds in the tournament, Mercier and Dwan, he opted to make it 2,500. Both players didn't feel like giving up and we saw three-way action to the flop.

It came down {K-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and after two checks Grigg threw out 3,600. Mercier tanked for a while and finally came up with a raise to 8,300. Even Dwan seemed to be considering more than just a fold, but after a good thirty seconds he gave up his hand. It was now back on Grigg who glanced over at Mercier's stack before making it 14,400. Mercier flicked in the call and that got us to the turn.

The turn was the {J-Clubs} and quickly both players checked. On the river the {A-Clubs} appeared and Mercier check for the third time into Grigg who grabbed chips. The Aussie wanted more and counted out 21,600. Mercier started counting down his stack and figured out he would have around 37,000 chips left behind if he called and lost. After a good minute he called and Grigg immediately tabled {K-Spades}{4-Clubs} for two pair. Mercier kept a straight face as he threw his cards towards the muck.

Tom Grigg looked stunned by all the pots he was winning and laughed as he stacked his new chips. With 320,000 he is now the chip leader, both Dwan and Mercier will have to worry about him more than the other way around. Grigg is still out of position against two of the top players in the world, but what a day he is having so far!

Collopy Runs Into Jacks

On a flop of {2-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{10-Spades}, a player in the hijack bet 3,500 into Jim "Mr_BigQueso" Collopy, who made the call from the cutoff. Both players proceeded to check the {2-Spades} turn, and the {7-Hearts} peeled off on the river. The hijack bet 8,200, Collopy called, and the hijack rolled over {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}. Collopy simply mucked as his chip stack dropped to 28,000.

Bad for the Brits

Chris O'Donnell popped by to tell his roommate James Dempsey of his demise, and we ear-wigged on the conversation.

An older gentleman opened to 4,000 and O'Donnell flatted on the button before David Vamplew moved his 24 big blind stack all-in from the big blind. The original raiser shoved behind and O'Donnell called all-in for 70,000 with pocket queens. Vamplew opened pocket eights, but both were behind to the pocket aces of their opponent who had them drawing dead after the flop.

It also seems as if Chris Brammer is out. He moved to table 24 just before the break with just 8,000 chips after getting it in drawing dead, and is nowhere to be seen now.

Set of Eights for Byrd

Action folded to Leo Boxell in the hijack and he opened for 3,300, which the cutoff called. Ralph Byrd came along for the ride from the button, while the player in the big blind decided to exercise his option with a three-bet to 12,800. Boxell and the two limpers all made the call, making it four-way action to the {7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop.

From there, action check all the way to Byrd, who moved all in. One by one his opponents folded, and he must have felt gracious as he revealed {8-Clubs}{8-Spades} for the flopped nuts. Boxell dropped a bit to 100K on the hand.
