Payne Leads Day 1a Survivors

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Brian Payne - Day 1a Chip Leader
Brian Payne - Day 1a Chip Leader

Day 1a of the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event is complete, and the end-of-day chip leader is Brian Payne, who bagged 299,900 chips.

A total of 157 players entered Day 1a of the Aussie Millions Main Event – a four-player increase from 2012. Only 70 runners survived after seven levels of play, and joining Payne at the top of the counts are James Obst, Phillip Willcocks, Ayaz Mahmood, and Kevin Rabichow.

En route to the chip lead, Payne played a very strange hand against an opponent at his table. The two players were heads up on a board of {9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, and there was about 90,000 in the middle. Payne tossed out 30,000, which was enough to put his opponent all in, and the player called for a little less. Payne begrudgingly turned over {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} for ace-high, and his opponent grinned before flipping over {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for the same hand!

Payne’s aggressive style helped him grow his stack all day, and will return on Day 2 as one of – if not the – chip leaders.

There were plenty of casualties on Day 1a, including 2012 Aussie Millions Main Event champion Oliver Speidel, 2011 champion David Gorr, Brian Townsend, Rupert Elder, Grant Levy, Leo Boxell, Valdemar Kwaysser, and Peter Aristidou.

Gorr was eliminated when he lost a race against German Tobias Schwecht. The two got all of the money in the middle preflop, Gorr with {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Schwecht with {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}, and the board ran out {j-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{j-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}. Gorr hit the rail, and despite recording the knockout, Schwecht was eliminated soon after.

Elder was eliminated after the 75-minute dinner break. He lost most of his stack with {k-Clubs}{q-Spades} against an all-in opponent’s {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}, and a few hands later he was busted by a different opponent’s {j-}{4-}.

Day 1b of the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event will begin on Monday at 12:30 local time. The survivors from Day 1a will return on Thursday at 12:30 local time for Day 2.

The 2011 Champ is Gone

David Gorr
David Gorr

The 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event champion has just been knocked out. David Gorr regained some chips before the dinner break when he beat Jamie Pickering's {A-Spades}{J-Spades} with {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. The board ran out {2-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{3-Spades}{7-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and Gorr was back up to around 8,000 chips.

Right after dinner he was all in once more and this time he was up against Tobias Schwecht's {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. Gorr showed {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and the board, {J-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{J-Clubs}{K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, was unkind for the former champ.

The two previous champs have been knocked out on Day 1a as Oliver Speidel was eliminated earlier.

Quick Exit For Boxell

Leo Boxell
Leo Boxell

Leo Boxell has been eliminated some time ago and Michael Pedley just helped us piece together his downfall.

Boxell first lost a big pot in which he tried bluffing an opponent. His opponent called with a rivered pair of kings against the Australian Poker Hall of Fame member's {A-}{Q-}.

Boxell ended up all in for his final 13,000 chips with {Q-}{Q-} against a flopped set of treys. No luck for Boxell who was knocked out early on, on Day 1a.

Elder Busts Vas Nunes

Rupert Elder busts Paul Vas Nunes
Rupert Elder busts Paul Vas Nunes

Paul Vas Nunes opened to 500 in middle position, a player near the button called, and Rupert Elder three-bet to 2,050 from the small blind. Vas Nunes four-bet to 6,000 - committing a little less than half of his stack - and the action folded back to Elder.

He tanked for 30 seconds or so, then moved all in for effectively 14,025. Vas Nunes immediately called, putting himself at risk.

Vas Nunes: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Elder: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Elder's queens held as the board ran out {2-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{5-Spades}{10-Hearts}, eliminating Vas Nunes.

A New Champ Will be Crowned!

Oliver Speidel after winning this event last year
Oliver Speidel after winning this event last year

Oliver Speidel's table broke about 15 minutes ago, and an extended search has left us to believe he's no longer playing. Speidel took home A$1,600,000 for his victory last year, but he won't be adding anything to his winnings this year in the Main Event.

Jackie Glazier battling heads up against Greg Ostrander last June

Australian poker fan favorite and World Series of Poker Event #41 runner up Jackie Glazier was just spotted in the room. Glazier nearly won her first bracelet last June when she finished runner up to Greg Ostrander for $458,996. Paul Vas Nunes, just a couple of tables over, finished third in that event.

With $915,822 in live tournament earnings Glazier ranks 24th on the female all-time money leader board, in front of players like Amanda Muscumeci, Erica Schoenberg and Liz Lieu. Being the highest earning female poker player in Australia we feel that the title Australian Queen of Poker is well deserved!
