Shak Busts Robl In Big Hand During Break

Andrew Robl
Andrew Robl

The last hand before the break was a long one that ran several minutes into the break. It all started when Andrew Robl raised to 3,000 from under the gun, and Masa Kagawa called from the cutoff seat. In the small blind, Dan Shak announced that he was all in, having forgotten that the action preflop is only pot-limit. The dealer informed Shak he could only raise the pot to 13,000. Shak was corrected and made it 13,000 to go.

Action got back to Robl, and he took a minute before calling. Kagawa folded.

The flop came down {9-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}, and Shak announced that he was all in for a little under 100,000. Robl had slightly less than Shak, but the stacks were very close to even. After several long minutes in the tank, Robl made the call.

Shak tabled the {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs} for just ace-king high. Robl had the best of it, flopping two pair with the {10-Spades}{9-Spades}.

The turn delivered the {A-Diamonds} to put Shak in front. The river completed the board with the {4-Diamonds}, and that was it. Shak had won the hand and eliminated Robl as the first to go.

The Ladies Take from the Love Shak

Masa Kagawa
Masa Kagawa

Dan Shak, who won this event back in 2010, has been on a heater here today and was responsible for the eliminations of both Andrew Robl and Patrik Antonius. He tried to add Masa Kagawa to that list, but it proved easier said than done.

It happened when Kagawa opened for 4,500 from the cutoff and Shak three-bet to 16,700 from the small blind. Kagawa called and watched Shak move all in on the {9-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{3-Hearts}. Kagawa, who had 81,400 behind, thought long and hard before calling off with {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}, which was out in front of Shak's {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

The {Q-Hearts} turn gave Kagawa a set, but it was a bad card as Shak picked up a flush draw. Fortunately for Kagawa, the {J-Diamonds} blanked on the river and he doubled through the chip leader.

Juanda Falls

Tony Bloom raised to 7,600 from under the gun, and Dan Shak made the call from the hijack seat. John Juanda reraised to 32,600 from the small blind, then Masa Kagawa reraised to 63,500 from the big blind. Bloom and Shak folded before Juanda went into the tank.

After a bit of thought, Juanda moved all in for between 70,000-75,000. Kagawa snapped it off with the {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}. Juanda held the {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades}.

The flop, turn and river ran out {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{6-Spades}{8-Spades}{2-Spades}, and Juanda was eliminated.

Robl Back with a Vengeance; Eliminates Watson

Mike Watson
Mike Watson

Andrew Robl was the first player to bust from the tournament today, but he opted to fire a second bullet. Apparently he's come back with a vengeance as he's now the chip leader after eliminating Mike Watson.

It happened when Igor Kurganov opened for 6,500 from the hijack and Robl three-bet to 17,000 from the button. Watson then four-bet to 37,000 from the big blind, Kurganov folded, and Robl five-bet the pot. Watson announced that he was all in for 177,000 and Robl, who barely had him covered, made the call.

Robl: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Watson: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

Robl was a huge favorite and looking to dodge an ace. According to the PokerNews Odds Calculator, Watson had just a 29.74% chance of winning the hand, though that jumped a bit to 30.30% as he picked up a gutshot straight draw. The {q-Diamonds} turn was no help, and Watson watched his chances of survival be cut in half to 15.91%. Unfortunately for him, that hit zero when the {3-Spades} blanked on the river. The stack were verified, and then Watson made a hasty exit from the tournament floor.

Mercier Busts

Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Tony Bloom raised to 9,200 from the cutoff seat, and Jason Mercier moved all in for 28,800 on the button. In the big blind, Martin Finger reraised the pot, then Bloom folded.

"Do you have a pair?" asked Mercier, to which Finger shook his head no.

Finger tabled the {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, and Mercier showed the {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

"That's about as good as I could've hoped for when you shook your head no," commented Mercier.

The flop came down {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and paired both players. The turn was the {K-Diamonds} to put Mericer in front, but the {7-Spades} landed on the river and put Finger back in front. He won the pot, and Mercier was sent to the rail.

Kagawa Cracks Aces to Send Bloom to the Rail

Tony Bloom
Tony Bloom

We caught the action with around 30,000 in the pot and a board reading {6-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Philipp Gruissem had bet 12,000 from the small blind, Masa Kagawa raised to 46,000 from the big, and Tony Bloom three-bet all in for roughly 152,000 from middle position. Gruissem got out of the way and Masa quickly called with {K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}, which was out in front of Bloom's {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades}.

Even though Kagawa held two pair, Bloom had counterfeit outs. The {5-Spades} turn added to those outs, but the {Q-Diamonds} river missed him. With that, the two-time $100,000 Challenge runner-up was eliminated from the tournament.

Kurganov Busts Yu & Lee to End the Night

Chris Lee
Chris Lee

In what would be the last hand of the night, Igor Kurganov scored a rare double elimination, meaning we'll be coming back to Day 2 with just two players.

The hand began with Winfred Yu opening for 20,000 from middle position and Kurganov three-betting to 40,000 right behind. When action reach Chris "Genius28" Lee in the small blind, he four-bet to 130,000, leaving just 36,000 behind, and Yu called off for around 53,000. Kurganov hit the tank for nearly five minutes before announcing that he was all in, and Lee called off.

Kurganov: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Yu: {6-Spades}{6-Hearts}
Lee: {A-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Kurganov got it in good, but he had to dodge a lot of outs. He did so on the {8-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} flop as no player held a diamond, and the {Q-Hearts} was safe enough. The dealer burned one more time and put out the {5-Hearts}, giving Kurganov the double elimination to end Day 1.

Kagawa Leads as Seven Advance to Day 2

Level 10 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Masa Kagawa
Masa Kagawa

Year in and year out, the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge proves to be one of the most competitive and prestigious tournaments of the New Year. That was the case at Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday as 21 players took to the felt for nearly 10 levels of play. During that time there was one re-entry and the field whittled itself down to the final seven. Leading the way is Masa Kagawa, who ran hot throughout Day 1 and bagged up 695,000.

Things began going well for Kagawa in Level 5 (1,000/2,000/200) when he doubled through Dan Shak, who was the early chip leader. From there, he never looked back.

In a big hand in Level 7 (2,000/4,000/400), there was around 60,000 in the pot and a flop of {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} when Kagawa checked from under the gun. Martin Finger, winner of the 2011 European Poker Tour Prague, bet 16,000 from the button and Kagawa made the call before checking the {Q-Spades} turn. Martin then moved all in for 80,000 and Kagawa snap-called. Finger sheepishly turned over {A-Spades}{K-Clubs} and he was in big trouble against Kagawa's {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}; in fact, Kagawa needed either a non-heart ten or king on the river to keep his tournament hopes alive. The dealer burned one more time and put out the {2-Diamonds}. Kagawa improved to a flush to send Finger to the rail, which also vaulted him up to 600,000.

On the flip side, Andrew Robl was the first player to bust from the tournament and became the only player to fire a second bullet. Apparently he came back with a vengeance as he quickly chipped up upon his return.

It happened in Level 6 (1,500/3,000/300) when Igor Kurganov opened for 6,500 from the hijack and Robl three-bet to 17,000 from the button. Mike “SirWatts” Watson then four-bet to 37,000 from the big blind, Kurganov folded, and Robl five-bet the pot. Watson announced that he was all in for 177,000 and Robl, who barely had him covered, made the call.

Robl: {K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}
Watson: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

Others who joined Watson and Finger on the rail throughout the day were (click on their name to read their elimination) Fabian Quoss, Jason Pritchard, John Juanda, Jason Mercier, Tony Bloom, Eric Liu, Sam Trickett, Gus Hansen, Philipp Gruissem and Patrik Antonius.

It was actually a short and not so sweet stay for Antonius, who entered the tournament in Level 4 (500/1,000/100) and exited 20 minutes later. The action was picked up with 13,000 in the pot and a flop reading {J-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{6-Clubs}. Antonius had bet 7,200 from the under-the-gun position, only to have Shak raise to 20,000 from the hijack. Antonius thought for a moment before moving all in for about 70,000 more, and Shak made the call with {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a flush draw, which he needed to hit in order to overcome the Finn's {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}.

That's exactly what Shak did as the {7-Clubs} rolled off on the turn, though Antonius could still win if the board paired on the river. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {9-Clubs}. "I'll see you in a few minutes," someone at the table said to Antonius, referencing the fact that he was likely to re-enter.

"No, no, no," Antonius responded. "That's enough for me."

Lynn Gilmartin spoke with Shak during the dinner break:

Seven players are still in contention, but only four of them will earn a payday as follows: 1st-A$1,000,000; 2nd-A$610,000; 3rd-A$320,000; and 4th-A$237,000. Who will add their name to this prestigious list of champions (click name to learn more about their victory):
