Rast Headlines 2015 Aussie Millions Final Table; Rann Chip Leader

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Brian Rast

The 2015 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Main Event began with 668 players, but now just seven remain in contention for the AU$1.6 million first-place prize.

The man best positioned to capture the title is James Rann, who leads the final table with 4.085 million. However six men stand between him and victory including two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Brian Rast and established online pro Richard "nutsinho" Lyndaker.

Day 4 saw 30 players return to action, and it didn't take long for action to heat up; in fact, 11 players hit the rail in the first level of play. Among those to fall were Mike "Timex" McDonald (30th), Michael Pedley (27th), Jonathan Roy (26th), and Stevan Chew (25th), all of who took home AU$30,000.

In Level 20 (6,000/12,000/2,000), the world's most feared poker player, Phil Ivey, saw his Main Event run cut short courtesy of Australia's Anthony Legg. It happened when Ivey opened for 26,000 on the button and then called Legg's three-bet to 63,000 from the small blind. The {4-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{3-Hearts} flop saw Legg bet 79,000, Ivey raised, and Legg three-bet all in. Ivey called off and the cards were turned up.

Ivey: {q-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Legg: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Ivey got it in good with top pair, but his flush draw was no good as Legg held the ace of hearts. That's what made the difference as the {9-Hearts} turn gave both players a flush. Ivey rapped the table as the dealer put out the {7-Diamonds} river and then took his leave from the tournament in 23rd place for AU$40,000.

From there, Tony Hachem (22nd – AU$40,000), Michael Addamo (21st – AU$40,000), Ryan Yu (20th – AU$20,000), Jan Suchanek (19th – AU$40,000), Jesse "OnTheMac" McKenzie (18th – AU$55,000), Andrew Chen (16th - $AU55,000), and defending champ Ami "UhhMee" Barer (11th – AU$95,000) all hit the rail.

Barer's title defense came to an end in Level 24 (15,000/30,000/5,000) after he raised to 60,000 from the cutoff and Alex Lynskey three-bet to 160,000 from the button. The blinds both folded, Barer four-bet all in for 725,000, and Lynskey quickly called.

Barer: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Lynskey: {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}

It was a flip, but Barer was the one needing to improve. The {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop didn't help him, and the {10-Diamonds} turn actually left him drawing dead. The meaningless {3-Hearts} was put out on the river for good measure, and then Barer ended what proved to be a memorable follow-up run.

After a massive misstep by Raiden Kan, one that resulted in him exiting in 10th place, and the eliminations of Lynskey and Grant Levy in ninth and eighth place respectively, the final table was set.

The final seven players now have a day off. They will return to play down to a winner at 12:15 p.m. local time on Sunday, Feb. 1. The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be bringing you hand-for-hand action, but before then there is the business of the AU$100,000 Challenge final table, which will play out at 2:15 p.m. local time tomorrow. In the meantime, watch Rast analyze a big hand he played on Day 4:

Grant Levy Eliminated in 8th Place (AU$120,000)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Grant Levy
Grant Levy

You have to feel a bit for Grant Levy. This tournament means so much to him and yet again a deep run in the Main Event falls just short of making the final table. He was gutted when he finished 13th in 2009 and 15th in 2012, so defeat today will surely hurt again.

Lennart Uphoff raised from the button and called when Levy moved all in from the small blind.

Uphoff: {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Levy: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

The board ran {6-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{a-Clubs}.

Full counts, seat draw and recap of the day will be up shortly.

Alex Lynskey Eliminated in 9th Place (AU$120,000)

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Alex Lynskey - 9th Place
Alex Lynskey - 9th Place

It turned out only to be one double up for Alex Lynskey before he was eliminated. On the next hand following his double, Lynskey's big blind was shoved on by Anthony Legg from the small blind. Lynskey called with the {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}, but he was dominated by the {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for Legg — you might say he had a "Legg" up on Lynskey.

The board came {Q-Clubs}{10-Spades}{8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}, and Lynskey was eliminated in ninth place. He took home AU$120,000 for his finish.

Raiden Kan Eliminated in 10th Place (AU$95,000)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Raiden Kan - 10th Place
Raiden Kan - 10th Place

Well, that escalated quickly.

The hand began innocently enough when action folded to Macau's Raiden Kan in the small blind and he raised to 90,000. Lennart Uphoff defended from the big blind, and then both players checked the {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{10-Clubs} flop as well as the {2-Diamonds} turn.

When the {K-Hearts} completed the board on the river, Kan checked and Uphoff bet a modest 65,000. That is when Kan woke up with a check-raise in a big way. He moved all in for roughly 1.2 million, which elicited a quick call from Uphoff.

Kan knew immediately he picked a bad spot to shove with his {q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}, and indeed he did as Uphoff had rivered a flush with the {10-Hearts}{8-Hearts}. Just like that, the start-of-the-day chip lead hit the rail in 10th place.

Ami Barer Eliminated in 11th Place (AU$95,000)

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Ami Barer - 11th Place
Ami Barer - 11th Place

Defending champion Ami Barer has been eliminated, but it wasn't without one heck of an impressive title-defense run. Last year, Barer topped a field of 668 runners to earn the AU$1.6 million top prize. This year, in a field of 648, he placed 11th for AU$95,000. The amount of skill and endurance it takes to do that is extremely high, but unfortunately for the Canadian player known as "UhhMee" online, he won't be hoisted the trophy for a second time just yet.

From the cutoff seat, Barer raised to 60,000. Alex Lynskey was next to act on the button, and he reraised to 160,000. After the blinds folded, Barer was back up. He took a few moments and then moved all in for 725,000. Lynskey quickly called and tabled the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Barer held the {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}, and it was off to the races with Barer's tournament life hanging in the balance.

The flop was {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, and Lynskey's tens were still in front. The {10-Hearts} turn proved a massive, tournament-ending blow to Barer was he was now drawing dead. The river completed things worth the {3-Hearts}, and the defending champion was gone. Lynskey moved to nearly 2.2 million in chips.

Calvin Ho Eliminated in 12th Place (AU$95,000)

Level 23 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Calvin Ho - 11th Place
Calvin Ho - 11th Place

So far today, all of the eliminations occurred in the first two levels of play. Losing 18 players in three hours of play is an extremely rapid pace for Day 4 of a major poker tournament, but that will also lend itself to some very slow action as the day wears on. After the second break, that clearly proved to be the case.

Following 18 bust outs in the first three hours, it took nearly three more hours for the next player to be sent home in 12th place. That player was Calvin Ho, and he fell at the hands of Brian Rast.

After Alex Lynskey raised to 50,000 from under the gun, Ho reraised all in from the cutoff seat for a little over 400,000. Brian Rast made the call from the small blind, and everyone else folded. This put Rast's {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} up against the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} for the all-in Ho.

The flop hit both players, but it hit Rast harder — {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs}. The turn was the {9-Spades} to leave Ho drawing dead, and the river completed the runout with the {J-Hearts}.

Ho shook hands with Rast and the rest of the table before making his leave to the payout desk AU$95,000 richer. Rast moved to 3.1 million in chips, and there are now 11 players remaining.

Terence Clee Eliminated in 14th Place (AU$70,000)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Terence Clee - 15th Place
Terence Clee - 15th Place

Terence Clee limped under the gun and was met by a raise to 66,000 from Joel Douaglin on the button. The blinds both folded, Clee just called, and the flop came down {3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{q-Spades}. Clee was first to act and led out for 100,000, which Douaglin min-raised to 200,000.

Clee thought long and hard before calling, which left him 443,000 behind. After the dealer burned and turned the {K-Clubs}, Clee checked and Douaglin took his time before sliding out 200,000. Clee thought equally as long and then committed about half his remaining chips to make the call.

When the {10-Hearts} completed the board on the river, Clee took about 30 seconds before stacking his chips and placing them in the middle.

"I call," Douaglin said excitedly and rolled over the {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for the rivered nuts. Clee stood up and went to muck his cards. Since it was an all-in situation the dealer was obliged to show his hand, and she revealed Clee had missed a flush draw with the {5-Spades}{7-Spades}.

Clee exited in 14th place for AU$70,000 while Douaglin was pushed the robust pot.

David Longmate Eliminated in 15th Place (AU$70,000)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
David Longmate - 15th Place
David Longmate - 15th Place

From the cutoff seat, David Longmate raised all in for 243,000. Brian Rast made the call on the button, and everyone else folded.

At risk, Longmate showed the {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}. Rast tabled the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}, and that was much to the displeasure of Longmate's crew on the rail.

"Jesus, f***ing hell," muttered Paul Newey as he leaned over the rail to get a closer look at the hand.

"Gotta get lucky again!" shouted Rob Schiffbauer standing right next to Newey.

Despite all the hope his rail had, the {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} flop didn't do too much for Longmate. Rast improved to top set, and Longmate was left needing a gutshot straight or a backdoor flush.

"We need a jack," said Newey.

"Jack or backdoor hearts," added Schiffbauer.

The turn was the {2-Hearts}, and that provided a glimmer of hope for Longmate as he looked for the double.

"Heart!" yelled Schiffbauer.

The river was red, but it was the {5-Diamonds}. With that, Longmate was gone in 15th place, and he took home AU$70,000. Rast increased his stack to over 2.85 million.

"We had a fun sweat!" said Schiffbauer as he patted Longmate on the back when he made his way over. "Oh well."

Andrew Chen Eliminated in 16th Place (AU$55,000)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Andrew Chen - 16th
Andrew Chen - 16th

Anthony Legg has scored another knockout. After elimination the legendary Phil Ivey last level, Legg has followed it up by eliminating another tough competitor in Andrew Chen.

It happened when Legg opened for 35,000 from the cutoff and a short-stacked Chen shoved all in for approximately 165,000 from the small blind. The big blind folded, Legg made the call, and the cards were flipped over.

Chen: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Legg: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Chen got it in good, but Legg was drawing to two live cards. Much to Chen's dismay, Legg paired one on the {q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{9-Spades} flop. The {10-Spades} turn was a good card for Chen as he picked up an up-and-down straight draw, but he couldn't connect as the {5-Spades} blanked on the river.

Chen takes home AU$55,000 for his 16th-place finish.

Jesse "OnTheMac" McKenzie Eliminated in 18th Place (AU$55,000)

Level 21 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jesse McKenzie - 18th Place
Jesse McKenzie - 18th Place

Ami Barer opened for 58,000 from the hijack and action folded to Aussie pro Jesse "OnTheMac" McKenzie, who three-bet shoved for approximately 370,000. Barer snap-called and the cards were turned on their backs.

McKenzie: {a-Clubs}{j-Hearts}
Barer: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

McKenzie was in trouble, and his best bet to win was to catch an ace. That didn't happen though as the board ran out a dry {4-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. McKenzie took home AU$55,000 for his 18th-place finish.

For more on McKenzie, check out the Online Chat interview he did with PokerNews a couple years back.
