Jens Lakemeier Grabs 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1c Lead

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Jens Lakemeier
Jens Lakemeier

With a stack of 175,000 in chips, Jens Lakemeier finished atop the final starting day's leaderboard, but he isn't the player to catch heading into Wednesday's Day 2 of the Southern Hemisphere's most prestigious poker tournament. That position belongs to James Obst, who bagged up 212,000 on Day 1a.

After seven levels of action, the final starting flight in the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event came to a close in the very early hours of Wednesday morning at Crown Melbourne. Day 1c was a day that saw the largest group of competitors take to the felt in order to push the total number of entries up over 700 and make this year's event the fourth largest in the tournament's 19-year history. It was also a day that saw poker stars Phil Ivey, John Juanda, and Steve O'Dwyer hit the rail, while the likes of Martin Jacobson, Erik Seidel, and Jason Mercier advanced.

Ivey was eliminated in Level 6 by Australian Tamara Volkoff. With the blinds at 250/500/75, Ivey was all in for his short stack of 2,725 with the {J-Spades}{9-Hearts}. Volkoff had the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} and held through the {7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} board to bust Ivey. Juanda busted in the same level to Stevan Chew, and O'Dwyer went out one level prior when he ran queens into kings.

Of the 337 that entered on Day 1c, around 200 survived the day. Those survivors will combine with the ones from Day 1a and Day 1b to form the complete Day 2 field for Wednesday, but more names could be added to the mix because late registration will remain open until the end of the first level of play on Day 2.

Day 2 will begin at 12:30 p.m. local time, and we here at PokerNews will happily see you then.

Jason Koon Eliminated in Big Three-Way All In

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Jason Koon
Jason Koon

As we approached table 42, all the community cards were already out, three players had their cards open, and two of them were getting up to make their exits. We penned down the cards as quick as we could, and asked Celina Lin for some context. Here we go:

The player under the gun limped, Jason Koon over limped, Celina Lin limped, another player limped, and both Stevan Chew in the small blind and his neighbor the big blind saw the flop for cheap as well.

They got {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} to work with and both blinds and the player under the gun checked. Jason Koon made a bet of 2,100 and Celina Lin called. Stevan Chew in the small blind over called and the big blind now check raised to 7,900. Jason Koon then shoved all in for 15,800, Celina Lin folded, the other player folded, Stevan Chew followed suit committing his chips, and the big blind also invested all of his chips.

Stevan Chew: {5-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Jason Koon: {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts}
Big Blind: {K-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

The flopped straight (big blind) up against the open ended and flush draw (Koon) and pair and flush draw (Chew). Guess who won? With the {Q-Spades} on the turn and the {Q-Clubs} on the river it came runner runner trips on board, handing the pot to Chew who made a full house out of his flopped pair.

"That's main events for ya" said Jason Koon with a smile as he exited the tournament area. It hasn't been the best of trips for Koon so far. Yesterday he stone bubbled the $100,000 Challenge, today he busts the Main Event with just an hour to go for the day.

Ivey Eliminated By Volkoff

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Phil Ivey (or is this No Home Jerome?)
Phil Ivey (or is this No Home Jerome?)

A short-stacked Phil Ivey moved all in for 2,725 from the hijack seat. On the button, Tamara Volkoff reraised all in for 7,675. Everyone else folded, and that left Ivey's {J-Spades}{9-Hearts} up against the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs} for Volkoff.

The {7-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop didn't do much for Ivey, and the {K-Hearts} on the turn left him drawing stone dead. The river was the {10-Diamonds}, but Ivey was already halfway to the exit by the time it hit the felt.

Aditya Agarwal Goes Down with Kings

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Aditya Agarwal
Aditya Agarwal

The player under the gun opened with a raise to 1,200 and Aditya Agarwal right next to him made the call. The player on the button squeezed to 3,500 and the big blind contemplated what to do. He eventually colf four-bet to 12,500 and the initial raiser quickly released.

Action was back on Agarwal and the Indian PokerStars Team Pro thought about it for a bit before shoving all in for 31,150. The player on the button moved out of the way but the big blind made the call. Agarwal got the bad news soon enough.

Aditya Agarwal: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Big Blind: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}

The flop came {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and did not much for Agarwal. The {J-Clubs} on the turn gave him a flush draw but the {Q-Hearts} didn't fill it up. Agerwal was covered by a couple of thousand and he made his exit from the tournament room.

Retired AFL Star Steve Baker Busts First Major Tournament

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Steve Baker (selfie face). Pic c/o Tony Hachem

Steven Baker, 35, is a retired Australian rules footballer known for playing for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL) from 1999 to 2011.

As it happens, Baker, who was the 27th pick in the 1998 AFL Draft, also fancies poker, though he doesn't have a ton of experience, which is comprised of home games alongside Tony Hachem and Shane Warne. Baker decided to take a shot at the big time by playing the 2016 Aussie Millions Main Event — his first-ever major tournament — but things did not go his way.

Way back in Level 2, Baker lost all but 900 of his stack when his pocket kings were cracked by Faraz Jaka's {a-}{7-}. The flop contained a seven, the turn was another seven, and the chips went in on the river. Baker managed a bit of a comeback — at least enough of one to keep him in contention past the dinner break — but his run came to an end at the tail end of Level 5.

It happened when Baker moved all in from early position for 1,900. Action folded all the way to Poker Hall of Famer John Juanda, who opted to call from the big blind.

Juanda: {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Baker: {k-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

Baker, who admitted he had only looked at the king when he shoved, got his stack in good, and he remained in the lead on the {a-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop. Unfortunately for him, the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Clubs} to pair Juanda. The {4-Clubs} river was no help to Baker, and he was eliminated from the tournament.

Baker, known as one of the most efficient taggers in the AFL, stopped by Hachem's table to deliver the bad news before exiting the Crown Melbourne poker room.

Glazier's Tournament Ends with Ace-King

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jackie Glazier
Jackie Glazier

After a raise to 800, Jackie Glazier just moved all in for about 9,000 chips. A few players folded before a third player got involved, moving all in as well. The other players, and the initial raiser, folded, creating the following showdown.

Glazier: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Opponent: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{J-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and Glazier busted out, and she wished the other players at the table the best of luck before heading for the exit.

First-Ever Female MSPT Champ Looking for Aussie Success

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Angelina Rich
Angelina Rich

Last summer, Angelina Rich topped a field of 1,964 entries to win the Mid-States Poker Tour Venetian for $215,815. Not only was it the largest event in MSPT history, she became first woman to ever win a MSPT title.

"That's the first one I've ever played," Rich said after the win. "It was nice. It was a Deepstack tournament, started with a ton of chips, structure was really good, especially towards the end. I was surprised by that in a three-day tournament. It was really good."

Interestingly, Rich is the significant other of Australian poker pro Alex Lynskey. Late last year the couple traveled the United States in a 1995 Chevy camper, but now they find themselves competing in the Southern Hemisphere's most prestigious tournament.

In a recent hand, Rich opened for 900 from the cutoff and WSOP Europe bracelet winner Dietrich Fast called from the button. The player in the big blind came along and three players saw a flop of {8-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}. The big blind checked, Rich continued for 1,300, and both her opponents called to see the {9-Clubs} turn.

Two checks inspired Fast to bet 4,600, and that did the trick as both the big blind and Rich released.

Rubie Fails to Make the Dinner Break

Brendon Rubie

Minutes before the dinner break, Brendon Rubie, who is just two days removed from winning the 2016 Aussie Millions Event #10: $1,650 No-Limit Hold'em Bounty for AU$116,680, was eliminated from the Main Event.

We didn't see the hand as it happened, but Rubie informed us he busted after flopping trip jacks holding {k-}{j-}. Unfortunately for him, an opponent held {a-}{j-} and his short run came to an end in Level 4.

Levy Fails to Make the Dinner Break

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Grant Levy
Grant Levy

On our last pass through the outer room we noticed Grant Levy was no longer in his seat. A quick check with Russell Thomas, who actually scored the knockout, confirmed that Levy had fallen a bit earlier in the level.

As Thomas told it, Levy had opened for 700 from early position and Thomas defended the big blind with {q-}{10-}. The flop came down {10-}{7-}{3-}, Thomas checked, and Levy bet 1,100, which left him just 3,000 or so behind.

Thomas responded by check-raising all in and Levy called off holding pocket nines. Neither the turn nor river helped Levy, and he made his way to the exit.

Clash of the Team Pro's

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Aditya Agarwal
Aditya Agarwal

PokerStars Team Pro Chen-An Lin raised to 625 from the cutoff and the player in the small blind made the call. Lin's Team Pro colleague Aditya Agarwal in the big blind squeezed to 2,300 and both Lin and the small blind called.

The three of them got {4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Hearts} to work with and the small blind checked. Agarwal followed his preflop aggression up with a bet of 3,600. Lin resolutely shoved all in for 12,850 and the small blind folded. Agarwal asked how much it was, and made the call.

Chen-An Lin: {5-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Aditya Agarwal: {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Agarwal was in a world of trouble with his ace-queen, and needed a deuce or running hearts real bad. The {J-Clubs} on the turn left Agerwal just the deuces, and none of 'em popped up on the river. Instead the {8-Spades} completed the board and Lin doubled up.
