The 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event Sets a New Attendance Record!

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Frank Pezzaniti bagged up the lead on Day 1c

When the third and final starting day of the 2018 Aussie Millions A$10,600 Main Event got underway, there were already more players registered than in both previous flights and the numbers continued to climb throughout the day. After the dinner break it was official that the previous record of 781 entries, set back in 2008, had been surpassed and the efforts of the entire Crown Casino Melbourne team had paid off.

Satellites for the Main Event started as early as March 2017 and more than 400 players won their entry through the various qualifiers in the biggest casino of the Southern hemisphere. Aussie Millions Tournament Director, Joel Williams said “We knew we would get close to breaking the record but to actually do it well before the registrations close tomorrow at 2:15pm AEST is incredible. The team has worked hard to make this year’s tournament the biggest and best yet and this proves that we are well on our way to achieving that as we expect to confirm even more entries overnight.”

Thanks to the 212 entries on Day 1a, 196 entries on Day 1b and astonishing 379 participants in the final flight, the total number entries currently stands at 787 unique players. The registration remains open until the end of the first level and following break on tomorrow's Day 2 at approximately 2.15 p.m. local time on January 31st, 2018, and Fedor Holz is expected to be among those to join the action before the end of the registration period.

Crown Casino Melbourne Poker Room
New record set at the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event

Australian cricket legend Shane Warne got the action underway at lunch time and the poker room of the Crown Casino was buzzing with almost all of the tables in use, as will be at the start of Day 2 with approximately 370 hopefuls still in contention.

Three former Aussie Millions champions took to the felt on Day 1c including defending champion Shane Vijayaram, Ami Barer and Ari Engel. One year ago, Vijayaram's cinderella story of winning a seat via $130 satellite and turning that into a $1.6m score had inspired many locals. This time, it wasn't meant to be for the Aussie as Vijayaram limp-shoved pocket jacks into the pocket queens of former WSOP Main Event finalist Federico Butteroni to bow out in the penultimate level.

Shane Vijayaram
No back-to-back win for Shane Vijayaram

Engel was in early trouble and quickly found himself with just one third of the starting stack in level one. The Canadian never lost his cool and more than doubled with middle set against a straight and flush draw to bag up 61,900. Barer consistently built his stack throughout the seven 90-minute levels and advanced to Day 2 with 117,500.

At the top of the leader board it was a close race for the chip lead and Frank Pezzaniti claimed the overnight spotlight with a stack of 199,000. Close behind are Ludovic Riehl (194,600) and Kitty Kuo (190,000) after scooping big pots in the last levels of the night. Kuo flopped best with pocket queens to send Felix Schulze with pocket kings to the rail and also dispatched Craig McCorkell with aces versus queen-jack on a jack-high flop. Riehl's nut flush took care of Jan Suchanek, who held two pair and ended a wild roller coaster ride not far away from bagging and tagging.

Other big stacks and notables that survived the final flight include three-time WSOP bracelet winner Benny Glaser (153,000), Ludovic Geilich (136,900, Matt Affleck (130,600), Jarred Graham (129,100), Artur Koren (92,800), Federico Butteroni (91,500), Antonis “Toothpick Tony” Kambouroglou (91,000), Bart Lybaert (88,700), Martin Kozlov (88,300), Stevan Chew (74,900) and Australian Poker Hall of Famer Leo Boxell (55,500). Tony Hachem will join his brother Joe and his two nephews Anthony and Daniel on Day 2 after bagging up 57,800.

The sun wasn't shining for all big names Down Under at the poker tables today, though. Among those to run out of chips on Day 1c were former $25,000 Challenge champion Chance Kornuth, Sam Greenwood, Mustapha Kanit, Felipe Ramos, Kevin MacPhee, Michael Addamo, Allen Kessler and Dzmitry Urbanovich.

The survivors of all three starting flights will combine and the action in the Crown Casino poker room recommences at 12.30 p.m. local time with level 8 and blinds of 400/800 with a running ante of 100. A total of five levels of 90 minutes each are scheduled on Day 2 and the PokerNews live reporting team will be back on the floor to provide exclusive updates.

Kevin MacPhee Eliminated

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante

Kevin MacPhee, who's sporting an impressive mohawk for the occasion, three-bet to 6,200 from the big blind after Ludovic Riehl had opened on the button. Riehl took around a minute before four-bet shoving, and MacPhee called it off for 28,900 total.

Kevin MacPhee: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}
Ludovic Riehl: {K-Spades}{K-Hearts}

The window card directly brought the {Q-Hearts} MacPhee was looking for. However, when the dealer spread out the flop, the {K-Diamonds} and {9-Spades} popped up as well to put the American in an even deeper hole.

"That's so sick," remarked one of MacPhee's tablemates. The case queen remained in the deck on the {2-Clubs} turn and {5-Diamonds} river and MacPhee was eliminated.

Geilich Reading Souls

Ludovic Geilich
Ludovic Geilich

Ludovic Geilich was deep in the tank when we got to his table with {5-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} on the felt. He had checked in the cutoff and was facing a bet of 25,000 into 20,000 from his opponent on the button. Geilich took awhile and then dropped in calling chips.

The player on the button simply nodded and showed {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, and Geilich showed he'd called with {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}.

Kuo Crushes Schulze to Build Big Stack

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Felix Schulze
Felix Schulze

"Sorry I crashed out against Kitty," Felix Schulze said when heading past the media desk and provided further information. According to Schulze, he raised to 1,200 from under the gun and picked up one caller before Kitty Kuo in the hijack made it 5,000 to go. Both called to see a flop of {Q-}{9-}{7-} with two clubs and Schulze was the only one to check-call a bet of 8,000 by Kuo.

On the {5-} turn, Schulze checked and called another hefty bet of 25,000 "with the plan to call it off when no club comes on the river." Indeed it was a blank {10-} and Schulze check-called all in with {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds} only to find himself up against the pocket queens for top set by Kuo. A quick look at his former table confirmed that story as Kuo was sitting behind a massive stack indeed, and another player at the table remarked "you just missed a big pot, kings versus queens."

Also new on that very same table: Dennis Huntly, who has an above-average stack.

Butteroni Busts Defending Champion Vijayaram

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Shane Vijayaram
Shane Vijayaram

On the turn of a board {8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}, defending champion Shane Vijayaram faced a bet of 3,100 and elected to fold, leaving himself with 15,000 behind.

Only a few hands later, Vijayaram limped from under the gun and Federico Butteroni raised to 1,600. The big blind called and Vijayaram moved all in for 14,975, which Butteroni called and forced out the big blind.

Shane Vijayaram: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Federico Butteroni: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The {7-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop gave Vijayaram some hope with running clubs, while the {8-Diamonds} on the turn also enabled a possible split pot via straight on the board. However, it wasn't meant to be this time around for Vijayaram as the {Q-Diamonds} on the river was a blank and even improved Butteroni to a set.

Glaser Makes A Massive Call

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Benny Glaser
Benny Glaser

After Benny Glaser opened to 1,100 on the button, he faced a three-bet from the big blind to 4,400. Glaser called to see the {J-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{3-Hearts} flop appear. The big blind continued his aggression with a bet of 6,500 and Glaser came along with a call.

On the {5-Hearts} turn, the big blind thought for a long time before firing a second barrel worth 8,500. Glaser called relatively quickly and the {7-Spades} rolled off on the river. The big blind emptied the clip and shoved all in for 21,350, then quickly buried himself under his hoodie with his arms crossed at the table.

The bet was for nearly all of Glaser's remaining stack. The British mixed game specialist let out a faint smile and tried to glance under his opponent's hoodie, seeing if could get any interaction. There was no response from the other side, and Glaser went back into the tank. He took nearly two minutes before flicking in a calling chip.

Defeated, the big blind showed {8-Spades}{6-Spades} for eight-high and was eliminated. Glaser opened {9-Spades}{9-Clubs} for a pair of nines and vaulted up the leaderboard with the massive call.

Not Always The "Fairest and Best" for Goodes

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Tournament director Joel Williams and Adam Goodes
Tournament director Joel Williams and Adam Goodes

For those of you following the coverage from the Northern hemisphere, the name Adam Goodes might not ring a bell. Here down South, however, Goodes is widely known and considered a legend in Aussie Rules football. Goodes is a two-time Australian Football League (AFL) Premiership winner with the Sydney Swans, the team he played for his entire professional career.

Goodes is considered one of the best utility players and is also a two-time Brownlow medalist, awarded to the "fairest and best" player in the AFL during the home-and-away season.

The Australian's versatility stretches beyond the oval-shaped Aussie Rules football field. After Goodes had raised to 1,000 on the button and the small blind called, the player in the big blind three-bet to 3,500. Goodes then four-bet to 9,000, leaving himself with 32,000 behind. The big blind considered it briefly, before flashing what appeared to be two paint cards in the muck. Goodes showed a measly pair, {2-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, and added more chips to his stack.

"The best thing about poker is the people you get to play against. I've been playing against some awesome professional poker players, but instead of sitting there in awe of them I've been watching and trying to learn." Goodes said yesterday before he announced the shuffle up and deal for Day 1b. "The biggest thing to learn is that you have to minimize your mistakes because if you make one on the big stage it'll cost you your stack!"

Park Rivers Greenwood to Jump to Six Figures

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
$50,000 Challenge winner Sam Greenwood
$50,000 Challenge winner Sam Greenwood

Unlike on Day 1b there was no massive big stack before the dinner break and there is none thus far either, but Chul-Hyon Park has just emerged with a six-figure stack after sending Sam Greenwood to the rail.

According to Matthew Wakeman and other players at the table, it was a classic coin flip that saw Greenwood run out of chips. Wakeman had raised to 900 from under the gun and Greenwood from one seat over three-bet to 2,700. Park was in the big blind and four-bet to 9,400, forcing a fold from Wakeman. Greenwood moved all in for 32,000 and was called to see the Canadian turn over {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs} and Park had a flip with {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}. Three nines on the flop and a blank {5-} on the turn brought no upset just yet, but a king on the river improved Park.

Aussie Millions 2018 A$10,600 Main Event

More people than ever before have travelled to the Crown Casino in Melbourne to contest for Aussie Millions glory. With 374 entries on Day 1c after four levels of play, the total number of entries for the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event is currently at 782, making it the largest field ever in the tournament's rich 21-year history.

The previous record was set in 2008 when 781 players entered, and where eventual winner Alexander "joiso" Kostritsyn laid the foundation for his later high stakes career.

The total number of players is expected to rise, as players are still able to register up until the end of level 8, which is the first level of Day 2.

Defending Champion Shurane Vijayaram in the Field

Shurane Vijayaram - $10,000 Main Event Aussie Millions Winner 2017
Shurane Vijayaram - $10,000 Main Event Aussie Millions Winner 2017

In the field since Level 1 today is defending champion Shurane "Shane" Vijayaram. Last year he turned a $130 satellite seat into a $1.6m score and is back playing the Aussie Millions Main Event 12 months on.

"It's awesome to be back," said Vijayaram. "Playing at my home casino; it's awesome and there's a great atmosphere. Everoyne is having fun - I mean, everyone likes to have a punt.

"It's just a great festival."

Vijayaram says he's played here a couple of times since his win, but today has been an up and down start.

"I was up a little bit. But then I flopped a king-high flush and my opponent turned a boat. Still in, and it's a long day so there are plenty of hands still to play."

And what advice does he have for anyone playing in their first major tournament, just like he did last year?

"I’d say just play it like every other tournament. Like I said, they're long days so don't get disheartened that you lose or because you're down a little bit. There's a lot of hands still to come!"
