The 2019 Aussie Millions Main Event Kicks Off Today

2018 Aussie Millions Main Event Champion Toby Lewis

At 12.30 p.m. local time, the first of three starting flights of the 2019 Aussie Millions A$10,600 Main Event kicks off in the biggest casino complex of the Southern hemisphere, the Crown Casino in Melbourne. One year ago, Toby Lewis defeated Stefan Huber heads-up and topped a massive field of 800 entries to score his biggest payday on the live circuit to date, taking home A$1,458,198 (almost $1.2 million) for his efforts.

The Brit has once again made the trip back to Australia and fell narrowly close of another victory at Crown, as he lost the blind flip against Rainer Kempe in the A$25,000 Challenge in the early morning hours. Lewis will certainly be back to try and defend his Main Event title, but perhaps he won't take a seat on Day 1a as the A$50,000 Challenge also kicks off today at around 1.10 p.m. local time in the main poker room.

Following into the footsteps of a very successful live satellite program since March for the previous year, which created a record field of 800 entries, the Aussie Millions continued the path. In 2018, more than 400 players won their entry to the Main Event and that number may be closer to 500 this time around to put the event on track for another incredible turnout.

The dealer announced an open seat on table 32 and the one seat was no longer occupied. Seat two had a double stack, which belonged to Anthony Kingston and table neighbor Thomas Wing provided the necessary details.

According to Kingston and Wing, it was Antonio Casale that raised to 350 and was called by Kingston. Casale check-raised a queen-high flop from 500 to 2,000 and Kingston called, then Casale jammed the {6-Hearts} turn for 26,000 with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts} for a pair of tens and a flush draw. Kingston however already had the made flush and scored the first bustout of the day after not even half an hour.

"Who got my buddy?" said Najeem Ajez, who had just been moved to a new table to balance the tournament.

His buddy was Graeme "Kiwi" Putt whose seat Ajez had been moved into. The table pointed at table big stack Quan Zhou.

"You're in big trouble," said Ajez.

The table explained that Putt's {j-}{j-} had run into the {a-}{a-} of Zhou for the New Zealander's last 13,000 chips.

Johan Schumacher

2018 Aussie Millions Main Event seventh-place finisher Johan Schumacher has been eliminated from this year's Main Event. Schumacher took home AU$235,000 last year, but won't be adding to it after shoving 24 big blinds from the button with {6-}{6-} into the small blind's {j-}{j-}.

"I was running...just bad," Schumacher explained shortly after his elimination. "It was easy hands every time, nothing really complicated bit it was set over set, straight against better straight. Bad spots.

"It just went down, down, down. Nothing really hard. It's ok, I have two days off then I go again. That's poker!"

Dinner Break; Former Champions Engel and Stavropoulos Out

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Former Main Event and 2019 Mix Max champion Engel is among the early eliminations
Former Main Event and 2019 Mix Max champion Engel is among the early eliminations

The remaining players in the 2019 Aussie Millions Main Event Day 1a are going on their dinner break and will return at 8:50 pm AEDT.

With over 160 entries so far on Day 1, plenty of home favourites, ring winners and former Main Event champions have joined - and left - the field.

David Gorr is the only Main Event champion left standing after Ari Engel and Manny Stavropoulos were both eliminated. 2019 Mix Max champion Engel is lost with jack-ten against the kings of Heidi May, while Stavropoulos lost straight over straight in one of the last hands before the dinner break.

Other notable eliminations during the first four levels include Michael Moore, who was gone inside the first level, along with Kenny Hallaert, Sorel Mizzi, and last year's seventh-place finisher Johan Schumacher.

Schumacher shoved sixes into jacks midway through the first four levels of the day, but said that he had been "running bad" in a number of spots including set over set and making a straight against a better straight.

Manny Stavropoulos
Former Main Event champion Manny Stavropoulos was another casualty from the first four levels of play

Australian Poker Hall of Fame member Graeme Putt meanwhile was eliminated shoving jacks into the pocket aces of Quan Zhou, moving Zhou up into the top ten chip counts.

Currently, it is Anthony Kingston who leads the way after a string of bustouts propelled him to well over 150,000 in chips.

Other notables still in include 2019 8 Game champion Michael Gathy and 2019 Shootout champion Justin Liberto along with the likes of Benny Glaser, Aymon Hata, Dzmitry Urbanovich, Paul-Francois Tedeschi, Vojtech Ruzicka and Jackie Glaser .

Wong No More

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jerry Wong
Jerry Wong

Jerry Wong had grinded a short stack for quite some time before the dinner break and wasn't able to build his stack further when they returned to the tables.

Just now, a multi-way pot to the {J-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{10-Spades} turn brought a bet of 1,500 by Damian Oklobzija in the small blind and Wong jammed his last 10,000 in from early position. The action folded back to Oklobzija and he made the call.

Jerry Wong: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}
Damian Oklobzija: {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The kicker played for Oklobzija, as the {7-Clubs} on the river failed to improve Wong.

7Joel CohenAustralia$23,125$16,650
8Frank PezzanitiAustralia$17,270$12,434

There were a bunch of big names still in contention, from home and abroad, when the Bounty final table resumed earlier today. Frank Pezzaniti recorded the ninth Aussie Millions cash of his career and his third final table, but bowed out first taking home AU$17,270.

Fellow Australia Joel Cohen's only Aussie Millions cash to date came back in 2010, finishing 26th in the Main Event for AU$40,000 and he added AU$23,125 to that with a seventh-place finish today.

Ryan Otto was eliminated in sixth place for AU$29,270. This is the second-biggest cash of his career, behind cashing in the 2017 WSOP Main Event. It's his best Aussie Millions result since finishing fourth in the 2014 Terminator event.

The first of the big names fell in fifth place, with Danny Tang continuing his good start to 2019, cashing for AU$35,125. With five cashes in the Bahamas, he adds his first here in Melbourne at his first Aussie Millions final table.

Craig McCorkell recorded his first cash in over six months at his fifth Aussie Millions final table. McCorkell has made a habit of cashing here in Melbourne, with a trio of cashes in 2013, 2015 and 2018. It remains to be seen whether he will add to the AU$46,830 he takes home in fourth place today.

As the shortest stack three-handed, Ryan Bownds was the next player to go. He recorded his first Aussie Millions cash earlier this festival in the Mix Max event and now has his second, and his first final table, taking home AU$58,540.

Heads-up it was Bas de Laat who held the chip lead, but within an hour he was down to 11 big blinds. He eventuall lost {a-Spades}{9-Diamonds} against the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} of Luis Arrilucea on a {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} board to bust in second place, narrowly missing out on his second Aussie Millions ring. He adds AU$93,665 to his career earnings which now top US$500,000.

Coming into the final table as the short-stack, Anthony Marenko was the first elimination. He takes home AU$15,815 in his first Aussie Millions cash since cashing the Main Event back in 2012.

Dutch player Joep Raemaekers added a second cash of this year's Aussie Millions, finishing eighth for AU$18,890 before Australian Martin 'The Doc' Comer added the sixth of his career earning AU$21,965 for his efforts despite coming into the day second in chips.

Luke Martinelli has two second-place finishes in Aussie Millions side events before, but wouldn't be adding to it today finishing sixth for AU$27,585.

Start-of-day chip leader Joyce still lead five-handed, with Bjorn Ostby the short stack. He would bust next for AU$35,140.

Indian Jayan Prasad cashed in fourth for the best cash of his career, winning AU$52,710. Prasad cashed in the Opening Event at this year's Aussie Millions and now has a second cash in the southern hemisphere's most prestigious poker tournament.

Another player who cashed in the Opening Event earlier this festival was Joshua Abady who was next to go, winning AU$70,280 for the best cash of his career. This eclipsed a 33rd place in last year's Main Event for which he earned himself AU$35,000.

Heads-up a deal was done between start-of-day chip leader Toby Joyce and Vincent Huang which saw Joyce take home the lion's share of the prize pool. But eventually it as Huang who took down the tournament, the prize money and the coveted ANTON Championship ring.
