Top Pair Good for Payne

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

On the last hand of Level 1, Tyler Payne opened on the button, placing a 500-chip in front of him and announcing an amount to the dealer behind his mask. The big blind three-bet to 1,500 and Payne called.

The flop was {j-Spades}{3-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} and the big blind continuation-bet 1,500. Payne matched the bet and the turn came {3-Diamonds}. The big blind fired a second barrel of another 2,000 and Payne called once more.

The river fell {7-Diamonds} and the big blind checked. Payne thought for a couple of seconds and then tapped the felt, checking behind to take the hand to showdown. The big blind balked for a quick second upon Payne checking behind but Payne waited for his opponent to table his hand.

The big blind showed {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a missed gutshot to Broadway and Payne turned over {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} for top pair, good to earn him the pot.

"Where the clubs at?!" joked the big blind as the pot was sent to Payne, who gave a smile and stacked his newly-won chips.

Mroczkowski Overbets the River

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante

Action folded around to Eddy Mroczkowski in the cutoff and he opened to 200. All three remaining players in the hand called, taking action four ways to a flop of {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Everybody checked.

The turn came {j-Diamonds} and both blinds checked once more. Mroczkowski put out 300 and only the player on the button called.

With action heads up, the river fell {q-Hearts}. Mroczkowski threw out a bet of 2,300 and his opponent thought for a handful of seconds before sending his cards towards the middle of the table.

While PokerNews is offering live updates from this Main Event, there have been several other side events playing out this past week at the 2021 bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series.

Event #1: $560 No-Limit Hold'em attracted a field of 741 entries, one-upping its identical Winter Open counterpart from this past January's 592 runners by more than 25%.

A total prize pool of $363,101 was paid out to the top 94 players, and players such as Ronald Sewell (40th - $1,722), Wendy Lu (34th - $1,722), and Jack Sumner (11th - $5,159) made it into the money but were eliminated before the final table. With nine left, Day 1c chip leader Eddy Mroczkowski bubbled the final table ($6,463), and the remaining eight players headed over to the bestbet LIVE featured table to play under the lights for the live-streamed final table.

One by one, Kobzyev Kyrylo, Conrad Lau III, Gloria Jackson, and Bryan Brozman were eliminated. The final four players then agreed to a deal with Kenneth Brossoit of Charleston, SC earning the top prize and first bestbet Jacksonville trophy of the series.

The tournament clock shows 66 runners early in Level 1 and a handful of familiar faces have been seen throughout the room, several of which made the money in January's 2021 Winter Open $2,000 Main Event. Among them are Tyler Payne, local husband-and-wife Kelley and Kelly Slay, Dustin Holladay, and Ryan Snow, though the most notable of all is recent champion Scott Stewart, who once again has made his way across the country from California to take his shot at another victory in the Spring Open.

Welcome To Day 1a of the 2021 bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series $2,500 Main Event

The Main Event of the 2021 bestbet Jacksonville Spring Series has arrived!

Featuring a $2,500 buy-in, the Spring Series Main Event will run players $500 more per entry than the Winter Open's $2,000 Main Event held here just two months ago. In that edition, Scott Stewart won outright over a 510-entry field and earned $177,817 for his weekend's worth of work, doing so on the live-streamed final table for the world to see. Come Sunday night, eight more people will have the opportunity to do the same.

Other than the buy-in, all else remains the same as January's Main Event. Two starting flights will take place Friday and Saturday, each beginning at noon ET. Players receive starting stacks of 25,000 with blinds starting at 100/100 and increasing every 40 minutes throughout the tournament. Big-blind ante comes into play in Level 3 (100/200/200).

Fifteen-minute breaks will occur after every three levels (two hours of play) with a one-hour dinner break at the end of Level 9 (around 6:30 p.m.) Registration with unlimited entries will remain open through the dinner break until the beginning of Level 10 (1,000/1,500/1,500) at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Play will conclude for the night after 14 levels of play (2,000/4,000/4,000), and all remaining players at that time will receive bags for their chips and officially advance to Sunday's Day 2. Anyone that does bag and still wishes to come back for Saturday's Day 1b in an attempt at taking a larger stack into Day 2 may also do so without forfeiting their stack, as this tournament features a best-stack-forward format.

PokerNews will be bringing you updates on all the action in the tournament area from the time the first card is in the air until the last pot of the tournament is pushed to the champion. Hope you enjoy.
