Kevin Grabel Grabs the Chip Lead After Day 1b

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 400 ante
Kevin Grabel bagged up 353,500 to emerge as the Day 1b chip leader
Kevin Grabel bagged up 353,500 to emerge as the Day 1b chip leader

Today another exciting day of poker punctuated the seaside ambience of Atlantic City, as the Borgata Spring Poker Open’s first event rolled onward. The second starting flight of Event 1 ($560 No-Limit Hold’em Reentry, $1 Million Guaranteed) consisted of 15 levels spanning 30 minutes each, and when it was all said and done 469 entries and reentries were recorded, topping the 359 which were tallied yesterday.

Topping the chip counts when it was all said and done was Kevin Grabel, who managed to accumulate a huge stack of 353,500 to put himself well clear of his closest competitor in Bill Kontaratos (281,500).

One of the more interesting stories to emerge from Day 1b involved the perseverance of Cecilia Doyle, who managed to bag up 40,000 despite playing through nausea and other symptoms of pregnancy. Doyle was recently engaged to poker player Rob Voigt, and while Rob will have to wait until tomorrow after falling short midway through the day, Cecilia will be returning for Day 2 on Friday.

Other players who survived the gauntlet to secure a stack for Day 2 include Danko Campese (211,000), Luke Edwards (188,500), Tony Sinishtaj (128,000), James Woods (103,000) and Amnon Filippi (80,000).

Woods was especially active today, misfiring on his first bullet before ultimately finding a rhythm, and although he dropped a sizable pot with a curious call, he will be returning for a Day 2 appearance.

On the other side of the coin, players like Micah Raskin, John D’Agostino, Cherish Andrews, Megan Milburn, Joseph Stiers, Kenneth Lind, Ben Soltz, Natale Kuey and Timothy Little all fell short of the finish line. We expect to see most of them back tomorrow to fire another bullet or three.

Day 1c begins at 11 a.m. on Thursday, with players who bagged and tagged at the end of Day 1a or Day 1b still eligible to take another crack at building a big stack. As always, the expectation is that turnout will increase tomorrow – as it did today – with players trying to avoid a lengthy delay should they reach Day 2.

The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be on hand from start to finish, proudly providing live continuous coverage from the floor of the Borgata Spring Poker Open, so keep it here throughout the day to follow all of the action.

Baby on Board

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Cecilia Doyle

We caught up with Rob Voigt recently, a recreational player who made a splash at last summer's World Series of Poker. Voigt didn't win a bracelet during poker's premier festival, but jewelry did play a major part in his story.

Voigt proposed to his fiancé Cecilia on the Rio's main stage, with a packed house of poker pros standing by as witnesses. The scene was a special one within the often gritty world of tournament poker, showing that there is always so much more to life than flops and folds.

Rob took a shot here on Day 1b, ultimately falling short just before the re-entry period concluded. His better half, however, has persevered despite riding a short stack for much of the day, and she is still in contention late in the evening.

What makes Cecilia's performance even more impressive is that she's not doing it alone: the couple recently found out that they are expecting their first child. About eight weeks along now, Cecilia has been coping with the usual symptoms all mothers have suffered through during pregnancy, but despite the occasional bout of nausea and fatigue, she has weathered the storm to build a respectable stack late in the day.

With a wedding date set for May 11th, and a baby on the way in about seven months, this poker pair is set to become three of a kind. And with a $1 million guaranteed prize pool up for grabs, both are hoping to make a life-changing score here at the Borgata Spring Poker Open.

Fireworks During the Break

Level 13 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante

As everyone was filing out of the room to take a break, a big hand was brewing on Table 1. When we arrived, there was about 15,000 in the middle on a flop of {8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}, and Sean Wallace had a bet of 12,000 in front of him. Anthony Conte moved all in for 57,000, and James Woods was in the tank.

"There's so much in the pot," Woods grumbled. "S***!"

He eventually cold-called, and Wallace folded.

Conte showed {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for a flopped set of sevens, and Woods wanted to muck.

"I can't win," he sighed, showing {10-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

Woods wasn't drawing dead though - running cards could give him a full house, or if the turn and river put a straight on board the duo would chop the pot - and the turn was a repeat ten; the {10-Clubs}. Conte filled up, making sevens full of tens, but any eight or deuce on the river would give Woods a superior full house.

The {9-Spades} on the river was a brick, however, and Conte shipped a massive pot. Woods fell to around 30,000 chips.

We last saw Tony Sinishtaj back at the Borgata Winter Poker Open in January, where the native New Yorker made a final table appearance against a stacked field in the $200,000 Guaranteed Six-Max event.

Sinishtaj is in the house here today, and after a quick scan of his chip castle Sinishtaj appears to be quite comfortable in a return trip to Atlantic City.

With more than 105,000 at his disposal Sinishtaj holds one of the biggest stacks in play, putting him in position for another deep run here at the Borgata.

Bread + Butter is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon bite serving up sandwiches and gourmet beverages. One perk is the breakfast menu left as an all-day selection, making it a great spot for those late-night craves. The classic grilled cheese is a patron favorite, or you can also try the Portobello and provolone griddled sandwich, both of which — along with most of the menu — are $10 or less and won’t break the bank.

Enjoy truffled potato chips, spicy lamb chorizo pizza, or a prime burger from the tavern menu as a less-expensive dinner option. Or you can treat your taste buds and choose one of the many options from the main course on the fine dining menu.

Once you’ve had your fill of the action at the poker tables, take the time to sit back, relax and enjoy a glass or two of your favorite drink.

Gypsy Bar specializes in tequila but also offers an eclectic beer selection and compliments your drink with a roaring atmosphere of live music. The intimate space has seating at the bar, traditional pub tables, and comfortable armchairs for a lounge-type feel. Low lighting also helps to keep the mood mellow. Kenneth Lind in a Gift Giving Mood

Kenneth Lind's calling card
Kenneth Lind's calling card

We just caught up with Kenneth Lind - who you may remember as the 2013 World Series of Poker Seniors Event champion - and although he had a healthy stack when we said hello, just a few minutes later he was done and dusted.

The details of his bustout hand are gone with the wind, but the good-natured and gregarious Lind left a lasting memory for the player who did the deed.

After losing the last of his stack, Lind sauntered over to his opponent and clapped him on the back, before presenting him with a parting gift of sorts.

Just like the legend Barry Greenstein before him, Lind left the player who claimed the last of his chips a personalized memento to memorialize the event. Although the young man appeared to be quite confused by the development, he accepted the tribute in good spirits, reading it over to learn he had just dispatched a WSOP bracelet winner.

Lind said he'd be getting right back on the horse though, electing to reenter and try his hand once again. We'll be sure to let you know if and when another lucky player receives Lind's calling card.

Woods Does "Everything Wrong" and Wins

James Woods was faced with a bet of 14,000 on a board of {3-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}, and opted to move all in for an additional 10,150.

"You have kings?" Woods asked his opponent, who was in the tank. "How do they feel now?"

The player laughed, but when the chuckling subsided, he sat quietly in thought once again.

"Come on," Woods urged, grinning. "It's a rebuy."

"Oh I'm not rebuying," the player said.

"Well, if you call you're going to be playing the slots," Woods responded.

Finally, after around three full minutes in the tank, the player called with {7-Clubs}{7-Hearts} - far less than two kings. Woods was well ahead with {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for trip fours. The {q-Hearts} bricked off on the river, and Woods doubled to around 60,000. The player was left with a single small pile of assorted chips.

"I did everything wrong," Woods told our reporter. "I make bad calls and then make my opponents make even worse calls."

Raskin Ravages the Rockets

Level 7 : 300/600, 75 ante
Micah Raskin just cracked aces with a fortuitous river card
Micah Raskin just cracked aces with a fortuitous river card

We passed by Micah Raskin's table recently just in time to see a massive pot being pushed his way.

After examining the scene of the carnage, it turned out Raskin's {8-Hearts}{9-Hearts} had toppled the {A-Hearts}{a-Clubs} held by an unfortunate opponent on the {2-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} board.

According to Raskin's rundown of the action, the pot was played cautiously through fifth street, but when he made trip nines on the river the time to shove all in had arrived. The man wielding the strongest preflop hand in Hold'em called off, only to find his bullets were now second-best.

After firing a few bullets of his own at this reentry event yesterday, Raskin has built himself a stack with which to work, and with his experience and skill that spells bad news for the rest of his table.
