Joe Ferrigno
Joe Ferrigno

Flight A of the 2019 Borgata Poker Open Event #9: $300 Deepest Stack NLH drew 443 entries, but after 16 levels of play approximately 80 remained. Leading the pack with over 600,000 was Joe Ferrigno, while Peter Zarriello was hot on his heels with 580,000.

Others who made it through were Charles Kassin (441), David Hom (407,000), Ci Zhou (320,000), Marc Wagner (289,000), Alex "Chapo" Jim (229,000), and Zach Gruneberg, who was fresh off winning Event #3: $500 Black Chip Bounty for $56k.

Of course, not everyone was fortunate enough to find a bag. Among those to try and fall were Michael Wang, Kenny Nguyen, Donald Williams, Greg Reeves, Aubrey Williams, Corbin Avery, Chris Leong, and Blake Whittington.

The advancing Flight A players will join the Flight B survivors for Day 2 action at noon local time on Tuesday. Official numbers, the prize pool, and payout information will be released tomorrow, which is also when action will play down to a winner.

The PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the big hands and eliminations, so be sure to join us then. While you wait be sure to follow the live updates from Flight B here.

Zarriello Climbing the Counts

Level 16 : 3,000/6,000, 6,000 ante
Peter Zarriello
Peter Zarriello

A middle-position player raised to 16,000 and Peter Zarriello three-bet to 48,000 from the small blind. The player in the big then four-bet all in for 80,000, the original raiser got out of the way, and Zarriello snap-called.

Zarriello: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Big Blind: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

Zarriello had the goods and locked up the elimination on the turn as the board ran out {8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{j-Clubs}{7-Clubs}.

Zarriello is among the big stacks in the room, but right now it looks as if everyone is chasing Lou Ferrigno who is sitting on roughly 600,000.

"I'll Regret This"

Level 11 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Gene Brandon
Gene Brandon

With 14,000 in the pot and a board reading {5-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}, Aubrey Williams bet 7,500 from the big blind and Gene Brandon called from the cutoff.

After the {5-Hearts} completed the board on the river, Brandon checked out of turn. That prompted Williams to toss out a bet of 17,500.

"I'll regret this," Brandon said before calling for about half his remaining stack.

Williams insta-mucked and Brandon showed the {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs} for ace-king high.

"Nice call," someone at the table complimented him.

Big Slick Does the Trick for Avery

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Corbin Avery
Corbin Avery

A player opened for 2,200 from middle position and was met by an all-in three-bet to 18,200 from Corbin Avery in the small blind. The original raiser, who had 19,600, paused for a few beats and then opted to call stating, "I got you beat."

Avery: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Opponent: {j-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}

The table got a good laugh upon seeing the original raiser's hole cards, which while they didn't have Avery beat were both live. Fortunately for Avery the board ran out {3-Hearts}{k-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts} and he made top pair to double.

Weinstein, Smolley, Gurney, & Ginsberg
Weinstein, Smolley, Gurney, & Ginsberg

Event #6, the 6th Annual Mike Sica Memorial Seniors $350 NLH event wrapped up last night not long after the final seven returned from their dinner break. Once three more players were eliminated, the final four made a deal and called it a night.

Many of those same players are already back in action early today, trying to parlay their winnings into a bigger score. Third place finisher Ken Weinstein, fourth-place finisher Mark Smolley, sixth-place finisher Larry Gurney, and seventh-place finisher Marc Ginsberg are back on the felt today in Flight A of the Deepest Stack.

Also spotted were Dan Lobel, who bubbled the Seniors event, and Arthur Bressler, who didn't go quite as deep yesterday, but is back, undeterred.
