The 2024 Winter Poker Open at Champions Club Texas in Houston is off to a huge start with Friday’s $400 Monster Stack event doubling its $50,000 guarantee, and a pair of other events adding to a packed poker room to start the weekend.

Along with the first flight of the $300,000 guaranteed Mystery Bounty event, Saturday sees the $150,000 guaranteed Pot-Limit Omaha Championship get underway for the first of three starting days.

The $1,100 buy-in event starts at 5 p.m. local time with unlimited re-entry and registration open until the start of Level 9 (approximately 9:30 p.m. CT). Days 1B and 1C will go at the same time Sunday and Monday.

Levels are 30-minutes in length and players will start their quest for Winter Poker Open glory with 40,000 chips. Play continues in each opening flight until just 12% of the field remains, with those players in the money and advancing to Day 2.

The two-day event culminates with a live-streamed final table on Tuesday, February 6th once all survivors from the three opening flights have been thinned to nine remaining contenders. Those opening flight returnees will come back to the Champions Club poker room at 5 p.m. Tuesday to continue their chase for a five-figure payday for the win.

"Straddle" Works Well for Gayao

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 0 ante

With play 400 big blinds deep to start the day, players at Table 18 decided to "straddle" and "double straddle". The preflop actions would of course be deemed blind raises as straddling is not permitted.

Action folded around to Danylo Turov in the big blind who raised to 2,500 which was called by Margarette Zayao under-the-gun and Danny Chang to her left in the "straddles"

On the 875 flop, Turov led for 3,000 and was called by Zayao before Chang raised to 19,000.

"You guys are f***ing donkeys," Gayao playfully exclaimed at the site of Chang's raise.

Turov folded but Zayao called with just 400 chips behind. The last of it of course went in on the J turn and the cards were revealed with Zayao at risk.

Margarette Zayao: AQ55
Danny Chang: Q876

Zayao's set of fives was ahead of Chang's two pair and a straight draw, and with the J river, she doubled up and then some after dropping some chips early to start the day.

"Ship it to baby mama!" said Gayao, to the smiles and laughter of the table, including Chang.

Michael Zelaya was just seen returning to the field with a new entry slip after using one of his unlimited available re-entries.

As told by the man who eliminated him, Gabriel Andrade, Zelaya fired 1,500 on a flop of Ax105 before being raised to 8,500 by Andrade and calling.

Then on a 5x turn, Zelaya bet 8,500 and was called again before moving all in on the 6x river and getting called by Andrade who held AxKxXxXx for two pair and the winner to sent Zelaya back to the registration cage.
