Fabian Riebau-Schmithals Out For Revenge as He Bags Biggest on Day 1b of €5,200 PLO Grand Slam Opener

Level 10 : 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Fabian Riebau-Schmithals

Another successful day of four-card poker is in the books at Arena Casino Tirana. On day 1b, the final starting flight of the €5,200 Opener of the second-ever PLO Grand Slam by Diamond Poker Series, 93 entries were made. At the end of the night, 21 of them were bagging up the chips, the exact same number as on Day 1a.

Germany's Fabian Riebau-Schmithals ended the night with the most amount of chips, bagging up 2,976,000 of them. Good for nearly 250 big blinds at the start of Day 2, the PLO specialist has obtained 15 starting stacks on his hunt to take vengeance as he came tantalizingly close to the money in this event just two months ago, ending up on the soft bubble.

Second in chips is American Sean Rafael, with 2,257,000, while Hungary's Gergo Nagy follows in third with 1,872,000. Like Riebau-Schmithals, the live tournament scores of the two players are dominated by Omaha results as they pursue another PLO trophy to add to their collection.

The same can not be said for Tom Vogelsang, who is mostly known for his high-stakes hold 'em prowess. The Dutchman is now slouch in four-card poker either, however, as he amassed 1,714,000 throughout Day 1b to end up in fourth place on the leaderboard. Rounding out the top five is PLO bracelet winner Tomas Ribeiro, while the likes of Espen Myrmo and Robert Cowen also squeeked into the top ten.

The bottom half of the field is filled with recognizable faces as well, with bracelet winners Nikolaos Lampropoulos (579,000), Bernd Gleissner (354,000), and Ismael Bojang (225,000) all making it through to Day 2. Diamond Poker Ambassador Max Kruse also made it to the end of Day 2, bagging 293,000 after a mostly uneventful day.

On the other side of the coin were, among others, Stanislav Zegal, Amir Mozaffarian, Hossein Ensan, and Joni Jouhkimainen, and Blaz Zerjav, who all fell throughout the day. However, most of them are expected to fire one or more times tomorrow, as the late registration will stay open until the start of the second level of Day 2.

With 199 entries across the two starting flights, the €1,000,000 guarantee is almost reached. The final few entries needed will almost certainly take place on Day 2, which starts at 2 p.m. local time tomorrow, January 26. The final level of late registration will be the first level of Day 2: 6,000/12,000, with a 12,000 big blind ante. All levels will remain 45 minutes in length and the tournament is scheduled to play all the way down to a winner.

A marathon session is to be expected tomorrow, so check back in to PokerNews then to find out who will cross the finish line in first place.

Argyriadis Triples Up Late

"Alakazam" had raised in early position and Akin Tuna had called in the hijack when Christos Argyriadis squeezed in a three-bet to 186,000 from the big blind.

He saw both opponents call to the 4Q5 flop, where they called his all-in bet of 32,000 as well.

They then checked through the J turn and 8 river. Argyriadis tabled AAQ10 for the nut flush, raking in the pot and catching a massive triple-up while Day 1b is winding down.

Lampropoulos Hits Flop to Double Up

Level 10 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Nikolaos Lampropoulos

Bernd Gleissner raised to 25,000 on the button. Nikolaos Lampropoulos three-bet to 80,000 from the big blind, after which Gleissner instantly put him all-in for 259,000.

Lampropoulos sighed but decided he could not get away and made the call.

Bernd Gleissner: AKQ8

Neither player was particularly thrilled seeing the other's hand, but Gleissner was a lot less thrilled when the JJ5 flop made Lampropoulos trips. The 3 turn left Gleissner drawing dead.

The 9 river was dealt to upgrade Lampropoulos to a unnecessary full house as he doubled up to over 50 big blinds.

"Bruno Schulz" raised to 28,000 under the gun. It folded to Fabian Riebau-Schmithals on the button, who three-bet the pot, after which "Bruno Schulz" quickly jammed all in for 120,000.

Riebau-Schmithals complied with the extra chips and the cards went on their backs.

Nagy Prevents Chop

With relatively few chips in the middle, Burak Simsek got his stack of 265,000 in the middle on a flop of 3QQ against Gergo Nagy, who covered him.

Gergo Nagy: QJ106

Both players had trip queens with a jack kicker, but the 4 turn gave Nagy a flush to take the lead. The K river did not upgrade Simsek's hand, leaving him empty-handed as he headed to the rail.

Mustafov Spikes River Three-Way

Level 6 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Fahredin Mustafov - Youness Barakat
Fahredin Mustafov - Youness Barakat

Small blind Wendelin Jall, big blind "Slickwin", and Fahredin Mustafov on the button went to a turn of 6AK9. Jall checked to "Slickwin", who fired 75,000 into the pot of 155,000.

Mustafov stuck in a call for around half his stack, as did Jall for the majority of his. The 10 river then checked to Mustafov, who shipped in his remaining 76,000.

Jall let go of his cards, only leaving himself with 11 big blinds, while "Slickwin" asked how much was in the pot before calling off.

Mustafov tabled QJ107 for the rivered straight. "Slickwin" frustratedly showed AKQ8 as he paid Mustafov what he was owed.

Zegal Holds for Double-Up

Level 4 : Blinds 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Stanislav Zegal
Stanislav Zegal

Stanislav Zegal limped in, "eee" followed suit, and Max Kruse raised it up to 12,500. Both Zegal and "eee" called to the 9105 flop, where Zegal checked.

"eee" then led out for 30,000, which Kruse called. Zegal did not deem that enough, however, and raised to 166,500, the majority of his stack. "eee" quickly got out of the way before Kruse put in the rest, putting Zegal at risk for 204,000.

Kruse's draws did not come in on the 4 turn or 2 river, giving Zegal the double-up with top set.

"eee" Catches Correctly Against Tsoupras

Level 3 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Giorgos Tsoupras
Giorgos Tsoupras

"eee" raised to 7,000 from middle position and was met with a three-bet to 24,000 by Giorgos Tsoupras in the cutoff. The action folded back to "eee", who stuck in a call.

Both players checked the 328 flop through to the 3 turn, where Tsoupras bet 16,000 after another check from "eee". "eee" called and the 5 appeared on the river.

Tsoupras sized up to 42,500, sending "eee" in the tank. After some pondering and some speech play, "eee" stuck in the call.

Tsoupras tabled AK105 for fives and threes, which was not enough against the KK44 of "eee", who won the pot with kings and threes.

Gergo Nagy
Gergo Nagy

Gergo Nagy three-bet to 18,500 from early position, getting a call from "Megas" in the cutoff. Espen Myrmo then four-bet jammed for his remaining 32,500, after which Nagy five-bet to 116,500.

"Just tell me what I need to put in," "Megas" told the dealer before quickly putting in a call.

The rest of the chips flew in on the 634 flop, with "Megas" being the at-risk player with a stack of 115,000.

Nagy's Aces were ahead, but both players had outs after the 5 turn. The Q river helped neither of them, however, and Nagy scooped up the pot. He knocked out both opponents in the first level and ended up with over 500 big blinds.
