William Thorson Wins Big Without a Showdown

William Thorson Pads His Stack
William Thorson Pads His Stack
William Thorson limped in from early position. A middle-position player raised to 2,200 and Thorson made the call. It was heads-up to the flop of {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{7-Spades}. Thorson checked and his opponent fired 2,400. Thorson made the calculated call. The turn brought the {5-Spades} and both men tapped the table. The river came the {J-Diamonds} and Thorson thought a bit. Eventually he slid 5,200 out and his opponent folded. Thorson took down the pot and now works with just over 30,000.

John Kabbaj Gets Lucky

Ludovic Lacay raised from the cutoff to 1,600 and John Kabbaj called from the small blind. The flop was dealt {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} and Kabbaj checked. Ludovic bet 3,000 and John Kabbaj moved all in immediately. Ludovic quickly called.

John: {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Ludovic: {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}

The turn and river were the {5-Diamonds} and {K-Diamonds}, giving John Kabbaj a backdoor flush and sending him a 27,000-chip pot. Ludovic said, "Well played," and John replied: "That's what you get when you raise every hand, full value and the odd bad beat."

Home Field Advantage?

Dozens of Nationalities Represented
Dozens of Nationalities Represented
A "Nationality Chart" has just been compiled by the good folks here at the EPT and to no surprise, the field of 700 is comprised mainly of...you guessed it...Italians! 222 of them to be exact. Representing 35 percent of the overall players, Italians are far and away the dominant nationality in this event. Those calling France home are a distant second with 64 entrants and the USA gets the bronze medal with 61 players from America. A total of 39 countries are represented in this event, proving once again what we already knew: that poker has gone global.

That's No-Limit Baby!

Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu
Action folded around to the small blind who completed. Daniel Negreanu checked his big blind option. The flop came {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}. The small blind bet 600 and Negreanu called. The turn came the {8-Hearts}. This time it was the small blind who checked, then called Negreanu's minimum bet of 600. The dealer laid down the {Q-Diamonds} on the river and the small blind bet 600. Negreanu smiled and tossed out 3,200 and the small blind insta-folded. "I get there and you bet," smiled Negreanu. "I think I was good," said Negreanu as he flashed his cards.

Johannes Strassmann Gets Unlucky, Then Lucky

Johannes Strassmann
Johannes Strassmann
Johannes Strassmann and his opponent created a 35,000 chip all-in pre-flop pot and Johannes was dominating with {A-Spades}{K-Spades} against {A-Hearts}{J-Hearts}. The flop was good for Johannes as it fell {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades}, eliminating one of his opponent's three outs. However one of the two jacks that could help his opponent fell on the turn in the shape of the {J-Diamonds}. The {K-Hearts} was a welcome sight on the river for Johannes shipping him the pot and giving him a 40,000 chip stack.

Theo: {A-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Cutoff: {K-Spades}{8-Spades}

The turn and river were the {2-Diamonds} and {10-Clubs} and Theo moves up to 65,000, eliminating a player in the process.

Tony G Eliminated

Tony G Eliminated
Tony G Eliminated
After pushing his short stack in a few times and winning the blinds and antes, Tony G's luck finally ran out. After a raise to 1,700 from a late-position player, Tony G came over the top all in for 5,400 more. The raiser thought carefully before finally calling and it was a race situation. Tony G had the made hand with {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs} but would need to dodge the many outs of the {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} of his opponent. The flop came {Q-Spades}{6-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Tony stood up. The turn and river came the {A-Hearts} and {2-Spades} respectively and the normally charismatic Aussie headed towards the exit without saying a word.

Jukka Ylitalo Doubles Through William Thorson

William Thorson raised to 1,550 from early position. Jukka Ylitalo made the call from late position and the player in the cutoff seat called as well. The three players watched as the flop came down {Q-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. All three checked. When the {10-Hearts} hit the turn, Thorson checked again. Ylitalo moved all in for 8,525. The cutoff passed and after getting an exact count, Thorson made the call. Jukka Ylitalo showed {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs} and Thorson tried to muck. The dealer retrieved his hand however as per the rules and turned up his A-Q. The river was meaningless and Thorson shipped over 10,000 to Jukka Ylitalo on the hand.
