Maisto Opportunity

Giacomo Maisto is down to a short stack after giving under-the-gun shover Thorsten Schafer a double up. Schafer, it's true, started with under 60k, but his {10-Hearts}{10-Spades} were ahead of small blind Maisto's {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and the deck brought no upsets. Up to 120k for Schafer and down to 85 for Maisto.

Turning Trickett

Of the seven Brits who made it to Day 3, Sam Trickett started the day with the most chips - his 351,900 was good enough for fourth place in the chip counts. PokerNews' own Djinn, who has played against him many times, describes his style as, "Controlled and fearless and just really tough to play against. Everyone describes themselves as really aggressive, but he really is. And he probably doesn't know the value of money," and indeed Trickett has done nothing but increase his stack so far today.

Just now we witnessed Trickett open for 10,000 in the cutoff only for Martin Jacobson to make it 31,000 from the small blind. Trickett, receiving a massage already (these tournaments can be very stressful) tanked up for a little while, before making it 56,000 to go and staring confidently and somewhat confrontationally at Jacobson.

Jacobson hadn't been tanking for more than a couple minutes when Trickett quietly called the clock on him. And not long after, Jacobson folded and dropped to 290,000. Trickett meanwhile moved up to 385,000.

Will the Cerqueira Be Unbroken

Nuno Capucho had shoved for his roughly 80,000 stack once before, but no-one called that time. Last to fold was big blind Robert Willis, who showed him {7-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. "I got that beat," said Capucho, perhaps a little unnecessarily.

So it was that he found {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs} and pushed again, but this time Filipa Cerqueira made the call. Ms. Cerqueira is having a great day so far - after finding queens to cripple Stephen Chidwick just a few minutes previously, she had this time woken up with {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}. A {7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{4-Clubs} board later and Capucho was gone. Cerqueira meanwhile has leapt from just 108,000 at the start of the day to around 300,000 now.

Brandon Cantu - Where Deck Meets Face

Brandon Cantu
Brandon Cantu

Brandon Cantu's face is black and blue, in a metaphorical sense. He's been smacked by the deck so far today, the latest evidence being the following.

Dmitry Gromov opened to 10,200 preflop and Cantu 3-bet in the small blind to 26,600. A pretty quick call from the Russian.

The flop of {K-Spades} {10-Diamonds} {9-Spades} saw Cantu continue with a 50,000 chip bet on the wet board and Gromov made a speedy call. Both players checked the {K-Hearts} turn before Cantu fired out another 50,000 very quickly on the {2-Clubs} river, his fingers slightly shaking as he put out two small stacks of 5k chips. Gromov thought for a moment before folding and Cantu said, "Just to show you I'm not messing around," turning over {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}.

"Wow, aces again?" said Thomas Thang.

"So far, I've had full house, aces, aces and two pair today!" said Cantu sounding slightly bemused by his own good fortune.

Guedes Cantu Get it All Back

Pedro Guedes: He likes to move it move it
Pedro Guedes: He likes to move it move it

Having dropped half his stack so far today, Pedro Guedes may have been feeling a bit annoyed or just frisky, not exactly sitting back tight, giving himself a tough decision against - yet again - Brandon Cantu. The pot had grown to over 40k, probably more, as we caught the action on the turn (board {3-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{A-Spades}) with a bet of 105k in front of Cantu. Facing a call all-in was Guedes, who looked pained by the decision. "You have two pairs again?" he asked a non-responsive Cantu. Standing up and muttering, he thought for a while before deciding to commit all of a sudden, throwing down {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts} for a pair of Aces no kicker.

That was good - Cantu showed down {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and shook his head subtly while Guedes shouted something that sounded like, "SheeeSHAAA!" and then quietly sang, "I like to Move It Move It, I like to Move It Move It, I like to... MOVE IT!"

Badpab Good vs. Lykov

Max Lykov, comedian
Max Lykov, comedian

Paul Foltyn has eliminated Max Lykov with pocket Tens vs. Eights, growing his stack close to the 200k mark for the first time this tournament. The field is hovering around the low sixties, and with only 56 getting a return on their time and poker effort investment, expect action to slow even further as the bubble approaches.

Yesterday Lykov was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a rooster on it saying, "Photo of my cock."

Today he was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of a baseball and a football on it saying, "Photo of my balls."

Speculation in the Pokernews pressbox is rife as to what he'd have shown up in if he'd made Day Four.

Deadly Coimbra

Andre Coimbra - among the keenest to get into the casino this morning
Andre Coimbra - among the keenest to get into the casino this morning

Brandon Cantu is not the only overnight big stacks who has been having a good day - although there are, of course, various degrees of doing well.

Andre Coimbra of PokerStars Team Online was in second place this morning on 476,400, and he must have had an excellent start as when we found him losing this intriguing hand, it left him with 495,000.

There was around 25,000 in the pot when we found Guillermo Garcia (big blind) betting out 13,000 only for Coimbra to min-raise to 26,000. Back to Garcia, who promptly made it 44,000, and after a while Coimbra folded, bumping up Garcia's stack to 240,000.

Nevertheless, the friendly Portuguese pro is still in great shape and we wouldn't be surprised if he goes very deep in this one. Like many young online pros, Coimbra came to poker through Magic: the Gathering - he was World Champion in 2009 - and once he'd made the switch to poker he picked it up fast, becoming the first Portuguese player to reach Supernova Elite status on PokerStars. At the moment his live results are sparse to say the least - but his single live cash was a good one, finishing in 311th place at this year's WSOP Main Event. This week he is firmly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with on the live circuit, and if he manages to make it all the way he will find that he has a lot of support from Portuguese and foreign sources alike.

Tarantino Pulped

We've lost Antonio Tarantino just at the end of the level, he made a move with {A-} {10-} but ran into the {A-} {K-} belonging to Thomas Thang. A tenless board leaves us with just 60 players remaining now.
